So thinking of East 17 - Stay Another Day, Spice Girls - 2 Become 1 and Steps - Heartbeat.

Would you consider these Christmas songs (I do!) or think of any more?

Stay Another Day I think I will always associate with Christmas because of the instrumental is quite Christmassy towards the end especially with the bells.

2 Become 1 and Steps Heartbeat, no I wouldn't really think of them as Christmas songs, just songs from popular acts released around Christmas.

There was also The Mike Flowers Pops cover of Wonderwall but I wouldn't call it a Christmas song either.

The videos for Steps and Spiceys are Christmas/winter themed, so I would!

imo 2 Become 1 it's not, just a song that happened to be released in Xmas and went to #1

that doesn't make it a Xmas song, not even close

cannot recall Heartbeat, so cannot really say

Depends on what your definition of a Christmas song is really. The likes of '2 Become 1', 'Stay Another Day' and 'Heartbeat' might not specifically mention Christmas or something Christmas-related but they're clearly very strongly associated with Christmas - they've all reappeared in the Top 50 TV airplay chart for instance. I don't think the general public particularly care about the specific definition, if it makes them feel Christmassy then they'll probably call them Christmas songs.
Yen if something returns to the airplay charts each December it’s a Christmas song to me!

but just cos a band released a ballad in Dec it doesn't make it a Xmas song, it's a December song at most

it's the videos that get seasonal airplay for some songs, they dont get radio play because the songs aren't christmas songs intended for the christmas song market, they are just ballads that happened to come out at the time of year. Otherwise why is 2 become 1 a christmas song but Too Much isn't? Both December singles....

Sleigh bells? Religious themes? Peace n love? Christmas songs

I Love You frollicking in the snow? Winter song. Wizzard's Rock n Roll Winter never gets played as a xmas song (even though it could easily be one) cos it's a winter song lyrically and there are no sleigh bells. Wizzard's Are You Ready To Rock was a Xmastime hit but is also not a Xmas song, it just came out at Xmas.

Good point - let’s call them Winter songs instead. Although Steps Heartbeat has Christmas things in its video....

I'm all for Heartbeat being considered a winter track! I think it would have been all but forgotten by now if it didn't get annual TV airplay for this reason.

I can't really think of any more of these from the 90s but from 2000 there's also Never Had A Dream Come True by S Club 7.

I associate Handbags and Gladrags by the Stereophonics with winter/christmas - although no idea when it was released now

Same reason that I always associated Robert Miles “One & One” with Christmas, it was climbing strongly towards the Christmas week in 1996.

Definitely NOT a Christmas song though!

Think it was Nov/Dec 2001!?

  • 2 weeks later...

What about A Winter's Tale by David Essex or Winter Melody by Donna Summer?

EDIT. Sorry, not 90's songs.

None of them are Christmas songs.

Triggered when Stay Another Day in particular is touted as a Christmas song,
