Christmas songs dying out doesn't matter loads when Christmas Day was absolutely gigantic, and the gift card effect is almost non-existent at this point.

Will Thursday streams give the Xmas songs a big end of the week boost? They'll be barely doing anything but the average over the week will bump them up a lot if that's how Thursday is calculated.

 

I guess the 'normal' songs have four days worth of streams to add at this point, as Spotify data won't be in for yesterday yet, so hopefully it will be a lot less of a whitewash by Friday. It definitely looks like Mariah's to lose though, would love to know the gap between her and Wham!, if they had published that and it was just a handful of copies I expect there'd be a mini campaign generated to get them there.

The algorithm should be clever enough to give the Christmas songs virtually zero for Thursday.

 

I can see Little Mix and Ed making the Top 5 and quite a lot of other “normal” songs being dotted through the final Top 20.

 

It’s true that a simple download campaign would probably be enough to get Wham! there, artificial as that would be. Seems unlikely that it will happen in this sleepy week though.

Luckily it's not the average, but it's estimated based on algorithms that make predictions based on all existing Spotify data (machine learning).

They have definitely had new remixes/featured versions on NMF in the past though it is by no means common to see. A Dua feature sounds big enough to make the UK one in what I imagine will be another sleepy week.

The gift card effect died off about 5+ years ago

Hadji still lives in a suspended reality where the Now! effect is still a thing as well. And where Christmas songs aren't Christmas songs if they haven't charted in the top 40 yet.

Speaking of effects, the TikTok impacted songs of 2020 were much stronger than 2019. Hopefully 2021 is even better! (looking positive so far with Mother Mother and The Neighbourhood).
