Have Madonna or Michael Jackson ever appeared on a NOW album? If not there's a load of number ones right there.
Seem to remember 2007 was one of the few years where every single #1 that year made it on a Now.

And 2012

I believe Shape of You was never on one, Now rightfully chose Castle on the Hill instead
I'd imagine it's a case of licensing issues rather than them 'choosing' 'Castle On The Hill'.
I only saw "Dress You up" by Madonna on a NOW album (4, i think), so all her 12 number ones aren't one any NOW album

Madonna has never appeared on a numbered Now. Hung Up and Into The Groove have appeared on spin offs though.

Michael Jackson has two Now appearances though neither song was no.1. Same is true for the two appearances Whitney Houston has made. Ditto Celine Dion.

Mariah Carey has also never had a no.1 on a Now despite 4 appearances.

Spice Girls - 2 Become 1 (SYBT was on Now 35 and by the time Now 36 came out in Spring 1997 Mama was the opening track)

Going off topic -

I dare say that most number 1s that appeared on the Hits compilations did not appear on Nows.

There have been a few that appeared on both. Theme from S-Express, I think was on both.

In the 80s it was harder to predict what would be on a Now album. For example, Pet Shop Boys - Always on My Mind and Kylie's I Should Be So Lucky were on Now 11. The follow ups (Heart and Got to Be Certain - which were big hits) - did not appear on Now 12.

Some artists wandered from Hits to Now or from Now to Hits. Wet Wet Wet and Johnny Hates Jazz were both on Hits 6 but later featured on Now 11 with follow up hits.

‘Perfect’ never made it either but ‘Galway Girl’ did.

Neither did I Don't Care or Beautiful People only Take Me Back to London from the No. 6 Collaborations Project album did.

There is a few I can think of:

Freaky Friday - Lil Dicky feat. Chris Brown

Do the Bartman - The Simpsons

Teletubbies Say "Eh-Oh!" - Teletubbies

Godzilla - Eminem feat. Juice WRLD

Toosie Slide - Drake

God's Plan - Drake

Nice for What - Drake

In My Feelings - Drake

Times Like These - BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge Allstars

No Time To Die - Billie Eilish

Look What You Made Me Do - Taylor Swift

My bad...Dress You up was Madonna's only hit on any of these compilation albums....HITS 3 !

Eminem has had loads of songs that didn't appear including "The Real Slim Shady", "Lose Yourself", "Just Lose It", "Like Toy Soldiers", "The Monster"

I think I had a spreadsheet containing a list of such songs once but it has been lost a long time ago. I could probably recall a lot of the songs though.

Taking 2020 as an example, 8 UK #1 singles (out of 21) did not feature;

Ellie Goulding – River

Eminem feat. Juice WRLD – Godzilla

Billie Eilish – No Time To Die

Live Lounge Allstars – Times Like These

Drake – Toosie Slide

Mariah Carey – All I Want For Christmas Is You

LadBaby – Don’t Stop Me Eatin’

Wham – Last Christmas

The year before, 2019, only 2 UK #1’s (out of 12) did not feature;

Ed Sheeran feat. Khalid – Beautiful People

LadBaby – I Love Sausage Rolls
