June 25, 20214 yr This feels like a massive pastiche as others have already said, so doesn't really excite me that much, but better than 'I Don't Care' at least
June 25, 20214 yr I agree it's kind of a copy of a lot of other things - very much 5SOS with a dab of The Weeknd. The Cry For You sample is an odd choice and if it isn't intentional I hope September sue like TLC did! Either way it's far from his worst; even if it is very uninspired, it's catchy enough, though it would never have been the huge hit it'll probably end up being if it was by anyone else (which isn't a hugely relevant point, I know). The video is a hot mess though, what the f***? Edited June 25, 20214 yr by 365
June 25, 20214 yr Wow, he really did just take the Weeknd's 80s aesthetic and just about every single Spotify-friendly radio hit and condense it into one song didn't he? (with a bit of Bronski Beat in there for good measure!) Not that I was expecting anything less from him, I fully agree that he has the formula down to a tee and this will ofc. be a massive hit in the summer, a few more scattered through the year followed by some treacly ballad in time for Christmas. I mean it works for him so fair play for knowing exactly how to play the industry, but I find it very hard to invest in the music of anyone so bereft of any innovation. Still, I guess it will be good for the health of the album chart!
June 25, 20214 yr It’ll be huge but apart from the sample it’s pretty.....boring. Nothing he’s ever done has excited me and this is no different.
June 25, 20214 yr Finally watched the video.. it was really good. I liked it. However, his whole aura and presentation is very "GO GIRL, GIVE US NOTHING". I honestly don't think there is anyone more bland that gets so much success off doing so... little. It's really irritating. The song didn't really grow either way on that listen either.

June 25, 20214 yr Saw this on PopJustice, from a few years ago but seems hilarious now: "There are a lot of singer-songwriters around now," Ed mused. "I'm not the first, but there are more than before. I'm very happy for everyone to be in the same race as me, even if they copy every single thing I've done." Oooooh, burn. "In a 100-meter sprint to get a No. 1 album. I just know I'm going to win," he continued. "I don't care who's doing what. I just know I'm going to win. I'm going to make sure I come first." even if they copy every single thing I've done. even if they copy every single thing I've done. even if they copy every single thing I've done. even if they copy every single thing I've done.
June 25, 20214 yr He literally said 'I'm not the first' in that same quote so nice selective reading.
June 25, 20214 yr Ok so I’m already over this. I thought it was a bit of a bop at first but it’s actually pretty boring once the ‘Wow that’s different from Ed’ factor has worn off.

Except without racking up umpteen plagiarism lawsuits in the process.
June 26, 20213 yr He literally said 'I'm not the first' in that same quote so nice selective reading. To be fair it’s selective of you to hone in on that portion of the quote in order to defend him x Other than saying he isn’t the first singer-songwriter (which is obvious) he went on to take credit for a surge of other modern singer-songwriters and then cockily implied that everyone in the same race as him copies every single thing he’s done. As quotes go that was definitely Ed Sheeran majorly flexing. The funny thing being that Ed is the master of copying others (particularly on this new song), but somehow managing to present it in a way that has the public thinking it’s novel.
June 26, 20213 yr We've seen several times before that he only cares about chart success. He even "forgot" Afterglow, his own #2 song, on his own IG a couple of weeks back. As far as the potential underperformance (still #2 on AM behind Olivia) of Bad Habits goes, part of his fanbase from 2017 has already grown up and maybe had kids and have lots to think about in addition to new single by Ed. And he definitely hasn't got new ones in recent years. Edited June 26, 20213 yr by Sour Candy
June 26, 20213 yr Pitchfork love him :o Ed Sheeran’s bloodless club tune "Bad Habits" continues his quixotic crusade to neuter every genre of popular music. And it will suck the life out of you. “Bad Habits” makes Ed Sheeran’s glory days as a M’ladyman with an acoustic guitar seem almost charming. After dabbling in dancehall and hip-hop on 2019’s No.6 Collaborations Project, the lad remains firmly committed to exploring all the different shades of derivative. Sheeran’s take on a post-pandemic club tune (his words) has zero edge, flaunting a noirish synth line but neutering any real hints of danger. It’s all painfully predictable: Sheeran’s titular bad habits give way to loneliness, empty conversations, and regret. Eventually, he concludes, “My bad habits lead to you,” throwing in an obligatory coo. The whole thing aspires for Abel but settles for anonymity. Edited June 26, 20213 yr by Bjork
June 26, 20213 yr But don't think the song has a sample, Genius has the credits and nothing is mentioned.
