Songs including samples isn't normally a big factor in deciding vetoes in general ~ (at least from my immediate memory)

 

The Leony song had enough veto points to be vetoed if we wanted it to, we just didn't. It had nothing to do with the mod discretion rule. x

The sample is just the melody for the vocals. It’s not the backing or the lyrics. So it’s not even That strong a sample, it’s just a well recognised source material and it has been used well and creatively

 

 

I never said a word in defence of the track in the mod Forum. We have a policy of not advocating for your own track if it’s up for discussion so the remainder of the team make their decision and given that we actually vetoed a mod entry this month we have no qualms of doing that. I have been vetoed in the past.

That rip off of A Spaceman Came got through last month, so I think backing music being the same is usually okay.

I don’t really have an issue with samples, they’re quite commonplace in modern music, like My Hand & My Heart so if it’s just sampling a melody rather than taking like the actual song itself, I rarely have much of a problem.

Wasn’t trying to make a stink about it, I am just genuinely curious and wish I could sneak a peek at how the conversations go during the veto process in the mod forum!

It just confused me as to how it would pass the veto as I (was clearly wrong about samples/interpolation) assumed the veto process was stricter on them than they actually are :lol: It's nice to know for future reference though that if we stumble on a song that samples and interpolates another track as well as this does then we can consider it without fear of it being automatically vetoed instead of us thinking "Nah that sample will get it auto vetoed" (and no I am not going to go looking for a song that is similar just for the sake of it lmao)

I love a creative use of a sample! The closer to like cover Territory it is the more shifty i get about it but like clever usage is something I have no qualms with. Like if there was a track that sampled another similar to the way that Katy Perry‘s team remade Dagny‘s „Love You Like That“ for „Never Really Over“ then I’m generally fine with that.

 

We have the points in because of the question „what if it samples a past BJSC entry“ and we built it out from there to cover sampling generally. The way I approach it is if it’s substantially different then I am generally fine with it. Eg changing the language and the tempo or keeping a melody and swapping lyrics and backing or keeping lyrics but swapping melody. All fine for me

Probably Wednesday as that's what was initially suggested! (doing it on Thursday would feel a little bit too uncomfortably close to the deadline as well x)
