We're approaching the 20th anniversary of Aaliyah's tragic and untimely passing. :(

For many years the majority of her back catalogue has been withheld from digital and streaming platforms - but that is about to change.

Barry Hankerson (Aaliyah's uncle) has secured a new partnership with independent Bay Area-based music company EMPIRE that will make the entire Blackground catalog -- not just Aaliyah’s works, but 17 albums by artists including Timbaland & Magoo, Tank, Toni Braxton and JoJo -- available to stream for the first time ever, and for both physical and digital purchase for the first time in a decade. And after what fans have deemed an interminable wait -- with several false starts and unfulfilled promises along the way -- Hankerson is finally sitting for his first extensive interview in over a decade to answer the one question that everyone has had on their minds: What took so long?

Aaliyah's estate isn't happy about it, sending out this rather wordy statement:

Personally I think it's a good thing. Her music legacy deserves to be accessible!

I’ve been listening to her so much recently, crazy it’s been 20 years 😰

One of my all time favourite artists, and can’t even imagine the great things she could’ve gone on to do.

Aaliyah is in my top 10 albums and I’ve been determined to find it on vinyl, so pleased it’s being reissued finally! The ruby with gold splatter variant looks heavenly. I’ll definitely be getting that along with One in a Million.

I’ve luckily been able to listen to most of her music through Apple Music as I bought her albums on cd from eBay and managed to add them to my library the old school way haha, but I’m so pleased the music is going to be on streaming for the first time. I really hope it brings a new generation of fans, her music is so timeless

Finally!! It really is what she deserves. At the same time, I do find it complicated, especially after seeing the reaction of the family.

20 years ago today since Aaliyah's death

Her second album One in a Million was reissued on Friday and apparently it's heading for Top 10 in the US.

I always thought "We Need a Resolution" was so ahead of its time with such a great production that was so out of the box for its time.

Took a listen to her first album the other day, didn't really hit tbh and I found majority of it forgettable? But I'm quite happy I didn't take to it due to (he who shall not be named) seemingly heavy involvement in it all.

Idk how much more involvement he has with her music career beyond her debut, but I def won't hold it against/I can't see it clouding my judgement of the albums etc..

I think I know the answer, but are her other albums better than her debut?

You know the answer!

She just went from strength to strength and her self-titled is simply one of the best R&B records ever.

been listening to the self titled brilliant 3rd album all day, it still sounds so good 20 years on
Think I'll create a playlist when all of the releases have been done. I think it's a good thing that her music is being re-released. She was becoming bigger with each album and could have been huuuuge.
