I briefly worried for a second that there was an error in my data after seeing that Flynnonda apparently have 3 semi-final wins (!) but it is actually true, both of their top 10 hits (LP and Tame Impala) won their semi as did Royal & The Serpent despite only going on to finish 20th in the final. Semi-final stats can be weird!

loving this format reveal concept! some promising tunes too so far judging by skim previews.

will be interesting to see just how much of a veteran nation Danæviia turns out to be, though I think there's still a good few active nations who joined earlier than I

CUMU137: SEMI-FINAL ID CHECKS: THE CLASS of 2014

In 2014 we've got debutants from Land of DW who have also gone down the dance route with the pop/ dubstep crossover of “Homesick”. For the pop fans Ultraviolence have brought out MICHAELA and the catchy “Tears In My Eyes” and Hushkanukia have called upon Rebecca Ferguson who has teamed up with incredible producer Nile Rodgers on “No Words Needed”. The shortest song in the contest comes from Republic of Adonia who have sent Brazilian singer, songwriter, and drag queen Pabllo Vittar and the brilliant mash-up of dance and pop that is “Ultra Som” and we have some K-Pop from POPHUB who have sent SUMNI.

Harmonica made their debut way back in 64 and have only made the Top 10 three times so far, they are hoping on Canadian alt-pop duo Neon Dreams to bring them a shot at the top tier with their debut single “Marching Bands”.

It's also the year that I debuted and was dragged kicking (and /s/creaming) into the contest by Bré and Leww. I've gone with some experimental electronic music, the epic “Touch Absence” from Glaswegian producer Calum MacRae (aka Lanark Artefax) who has Aphex Twin and Bjork as his fans and has the letters DNQ written all over it. *.*

CUMU137: SEMI-FINAL ID CHECKS: THE CLASS of 2013

2013 now, first up are Mulgracia, who actually celebrate 50 contests but did not (as far as I know) choose to send an anniversary entry. They've gone with Ariana and the Rose and the very very catchy and danceable (so catchy it got double nominated) electropop of “Every Body”. We've also got the what I like to refer to as 'BJSC Stalwarts' of Oslol and Varakë, the latter going down a similar electronic pop route with “Papa” and Oslol on about the 7th attempt plumped for alternative singer/songwriter Isaac Dunbar and the wonderful “scorton’s creek”.

We've also got Trifoski who are always there to sneak in with an absolute HIT and we think they've done it again with the wonderful 2-step UK garage flavour of “Busy” from Erika de Casier. We've also got Cadelicia back for 137 with some latin influenced pop from Isabella Lovestory as well as D'yermak'er who have a frankly mammoth 25% hit rate and this time have gone for the wonderful alternative pop sound of Toronto born (but now based in London) Jessie Munro aka Leith.

The ghost of Daehun smiles at the presence of both Girls' Generation and SUNMI in this contest.

Very much looking forward to hearing our hosts' entry this month from the description! (am also just realising how few of the songs in this contest I have actually heard already despite there being a loooot of familiar / overused artists, I think there's still only been about 3 or 4 songs so far that I have heard)

Oh damn I didn't know it was my 50th contest gah

Mulgracia's entry is indeed not formally an 'anniversary entry' as such, although as it is the same artist representing them for the fourth (!) time in their history it seems fitting enough for the occasion anyway.

(oops at James not actually being aware of his anniversary coming up :kink: I kinda meant to remind you but forgot oops)

It may have taken 7 attempts between vetoes and songs that were already taken but Oslol ultimately landed on a pretty good entry there. A great choice from Trifoski again as well - like last month it's another song that I remember falling just short of making my personal chart when it first came out, will see if it again sounds even better than I remembered.

Incidentally BJSC 138 is due to be the 50th entry for Caerfyrddia and the 100th for Danæviia and we have not, to my knowledge, heard of anniversary entry requests from either so if you guys want to have an anniversary entry do let us know! (It would also have been the 100th for Fljótavík but that is delayed to 139 now with them being an enforced absence this month oops)

I could have sent Paloma Faith or The Saturdays arghhhhh but yes my fourth time for Ariana and The Rose. I wasn't expecting to actually have this be allowed so to be able to use this anyway, I'm very happy

And booooo. Sabotaging me 😆

Thanks Bre for forgetting, you just saved us from being tortured by three minutes of the Saturdays

Just so we’re clear, this was a joke.

CUMU137: SEMI-FINAL ID CHECKS: THE CLASS of 2012

This is the year that BJSC TITANS Aeroche debuted and just look at those stats. *.* Slaying every possible indicator, you'd definitely want to have this card in your deck. For 137 they've gone for Deekline and this lovely slice of piano house. Will it become a fifty-fifth T10er for them?! 2012 also sees the first appearance of 152wild. Struggling to quash the rumour that they are actually the same person, 152wild are quite evenly matched with 3 wins apiece. However, it is N DNTN (pronounced: en-dee-en-tea-en) that have more overall T10 finishes, a longer Q streak, and a hotter hit rate (33% to 29%), plus they’ve been the stronger nation since their comeback in 2021 with 2 Top 10s and an instant return to winning form with Doss’ “Puppy” storming to win 133 - will fortunes reverse or will it stay with the 2021 status-quo and see N DNTN as winners. Here N DNTN have gone with Dutch DJ HIMERA and the dream trance/PC music uplifting vibe of “You Make It Look So Easy (S.M.I.L.E.Y)” whereas #00274E have gone with the gorgeous Scandinavian pop of Hanne Mjøen and “Emotional Fever” hoping to get them a first Top 10 for a LONG time.

We've also the ACTUAL :jameela: Republic of Bellamia who return with some catchy pop from Claire Rosinkranz and Terra Avium who've gone for some heavy thumping epic synthwave!
