September 12, 20214 yr Any particular reason why she’s been away for so long? I don’t follow her much but she hasn’t released any music for years as far as I know…
September 12, 20214 yr I guess she was bringing up her son. Plus, with her first three albums making her the richest woman on the planet, there was never going to be a rush to bring out album 4
September 12, 20214 yr I think that was the Pet Shop Boys, not Ed Sheeran. :basil: I'm actually incredibly thankful for Ed blocking that abysmally dull Drake single from making number 1 (or as Anthony Fantano described it- 'while listening to it I kinda want to hook a car battery to my nuts just to get some kind of mental stimulation'). “Bad Habits” may be a bang average 5/10 record but the production from Fred again... is solid and you can see why it has such mainstream appeal. How Drake can still get away with this half-arsed ‘er, will this do?’ attitude to recording and releasing music is anybody's guess. Hopefully people are starting to lose patience tho because he's doing significantly lower numbers than 2018, during which time the streaming market has more than doubled in size.

September 13, 20214 yr That first look top 10 is quite decent to be honest, well aside from Drake being in there and blocking Dua/Elton. The biggest shock for me is that I'm happy to see Ed at #1 with Shivers. Since Bad Habits I've become a fan of him. I can still count on 1 hand how many Ed tracks i like :kink: but Shivers is good.

It really isn't outside the Anglo-American countries though... No one in my country cares about him and in some latin countries like Brazil even the Gaga remix album did better on Spotify than Drake  It becomes more and more bizarre with each album. On Spotify, over 50% of his streams come from the US anyway. Edited September 13, 20214 yr by Sour Candy
September 13, 20214 yr To be fair in regards to the streaming market increasing substantially, it's not really in a way that's conducive to new hit music, which has mostly levelled out in that time. Streaming growth is largely in terms of an older audience that aren't really interested in new music (as well as plenty of people who have grown out of it since first getting their Spotify accounts). If you look at the Spotify chart from a week before Scorpion dropped and compare it with a week before DONDA, the numbers are actually a bit lower most of the way until you get right to the bottom of the top 200, because the numbers are being buffered by catalogue material. I counted about 10 songs (largely right at the bottom) in the 2018 chart that were pre-2010s releases, but drift to now 3 years in the future and there are suddenly 28 pre-2010s songs.
September 13, 20214 yr I wouldn't judge an artist popularity by looking at Spotify charts from non-English speaking countries were the language barrier is brutal In countries like Spain or Brazil most of the time there are just 3-5 songs in English in the whole top 200, many times the top 50 in Spain is 100% in Spanish... even right now the new Ed Sheeran is like at #150 or something
September 13, 20214 yr I don't see how Jay-Z in 2002 is comparable to Steps in 2021....Different eras, different genres. The Justin comparison is a bit better, but the first 20/20 Experience was a big comeback album and the latter was pretty bad sequel so there's that. It's a comparison only in as much as Part 1 / Part 2 style releases have been done before. I'm not bringing eras/genres into it - just the concept of it. A few are acting like it's a unique & bad concept for Steps, my point is that it's been done before and has not confused buyers in the way that people are implying that it's apparently confusing Steps fans. There's still no evidence that it has, after all it's been midweek #2 in both weekend updates.

I wanna see some gigantic latin hits doing well in the UK but it is not happening.
September 13, 20214 yr That’s a shame Dont Shut Me Down not in top 20 now? Not an abba fan personally but it’s a good song- thought it might have some longevity?
September 13, 20214 yr That’s a shame Dont Shut Me Down not in top 20 now? Not an abba fan personally but it’s a good song- thought it might have some longevity? There was always going to be a big drop in Week 2, particularly as the Week 1 position was propped up by high paid for sales which have fallen away. Hopefully it will stabilise after this week.
September 13, 20214 yr It's brutal vice versa too. I wanna see some gigantic latin hits doing well in the UK but it is not happening. The Spanish speaking community in the UK is far lower than other countries and the UK sadly hardly ever do foreign language music (BTS did get a top 10 hit last year but that's because of their stans) unless there's an English version.
September 13, 20214 yr Coldplay X BTS single next Friday. Physical copies also out and sold out after minutes... official second single from their album, will do huge damage in the US for sure, wonder what will happen in here.

I reckon this could be the next no.1 after 'Shivers' - depends whether the stans care enough about the UK charts. Also depends what it sounds like.
September 13, 20214 yr I reckon this could be the next no.1 after 'Shivers' - depends whether the stans care enough about the UK charts. Also depends what it sounds like. Actually in truth it doesn't matter how it sounds, the BTS army will buy whatever, no matter how shitty it sounds (ie Butter) luckily the Army doesn't seem to care that much about the UK charts Still think it's a bizarre choice for Coldplay to collaborate with BTS sure they can add a #1 to their discography but it's also an easy way to alienate the fanbase
September 13, 20214 yr Imagine Ed's rage if it knocks 'Shivers' off the top after just one week! Comes out on 24th Sep so Shivers is safe for 2 weeks at least (that said, I have a feeling that the MONTERO release could potentially give INDUSTRY BABY enough of a boost for #1, or maybe another single from the album) Edited September 13, 20214 yr by Gameskiller01
September 13, 20214 yr I think if they haven't alienated the fanbase by now with all the pop stuff they've done which is so far from how they started out, they'll be just fine.
