I will always remember the first time I saw Sugababes on Top Of The Pops performing Overload in September 2000. They were not a run of the mill girl group. They were interesting and engaging and all the singles that followed were too. And yet they never seemed to get recognition past Overload.

That was until April 2002. A slight line up change (the first of a ridiculous amount) and the release of Freak Like Me kept them engaging and yet somehow more accessible to the mainstream. That single reached no.1 as did the follow up Round Round and then this, their second album, hit no.2. No.7 and no.11 hits Stronger and Shape soon followed. For some, not all, this is where Sugababes truly began.

Today is the first time I’ve listened to a Sugababes album. I’m not really into girl groups but this doesn’t really have a girl group feel. It’s effortlessly cool and holds up really well even today. My highlights have been Blue and Supernatural and I’d actually consider listening to this album again and exploring their others.

What are your memories?

The singles:

Such a good album and aside from the singles I always had a soft spot for Virgin Sexy (I still sing it to myself every now and then!)

My thoughts are they have an AF you could be linking here boy!!!!!

Kidding aside, I loathe shape but this album has some spectacular classics that feel a little ageless because they never really followed any trends. They mish mashed genres so much and the end Results were always incredible.

If you enjoyed this one you really should check out Three. For me that’s their masterpiece

I will definitely give Three a go! And I knew you’d be able to plug the forum for me :P

A fantastic album that still holds up today & here's my rating of each track =

1. Freak Like Me - 10/10
2. Blue - 9/10
3. Round, Round - 10/10
4. Stronger - 10/10
5. Supernatural - 8/10
6. Angels With Dirty Faces - 9/10
7. Virgin Sexy - 8/10
8. Shape - 10/10
9. Just Don’t Need This - 9/10
10. No Man No Cry - 6/10
11. Switch - 7/10
12. More Than a Million Miles - 8/10
13. Breathe Easy - 8/10

The singles of course are the main highlights here & were excellently picked. 'Freak Like Me' & 'Round, Round' are pure pop masterpieces that cemented their status as a force to be reckoned with. 'Stronger' - another perfect track with rich sweeping strings that gives each of their vocals a chance to shine. Even the title track 'Angels With Dirty Faces' was a fun moment & probably worked better as a double a-side alongside the much stronger track, than it would have on its own. Then 'Shape' rounded off this era perfectly with stellar vocals & beautiful production.

Other highlights are 'Blue' - a light up-tempo catchy track, 'Supernatural' is another catchy number. 'Virgin Sexy' - doesn't quite hold up now, but still an okay time capsule type number. 'Just Don't Need This' - a brilliant track with rich sweeping strings & 'More Than A Million Miles Away' has a great beat & guitar hook with wonderful vocal melodies.

That's good to hear! You should give One Touch/Three/Taller In More Ways a go, each are just as great.

Great thoughts and great album.

I agree .three is well worth a listen, even a six b-sides are amazing.

Angels With Dirty Faces was the first Sugababes album I ever had. I remembered knowing them for the first time while watching MTv Asia with the song Round Round and I instantly fell in love with it. Round Round was also a big hit in my country (Indonesia). Then I became a big fan ever since.

  • 2 years later...

:hi: all, we are back with an album to check out as part of our listenthrough and review/comments for a week and we decided to go for an act who has their own artist forum on the site in the form of Sugababes with their 2002 album Angels With Dirty Faces. This one came with the mega hits in 'Freak Like Me', sampling 'Are We Friends Electric' by Gary Numan and Tubeway Army and 'Round Round' as well as 'Stronger' and 'Shape' which the latter uses the sample of Sting's 1993 song 'Shape Of My Heart'. It reached number 2 in the charts. We thought this would be a great album to go over as it's one of the best girl group albums!

Total length : 54 mins, 23 secs

Agree on Blue for the album tracks. In fact, you can put Switch and Just Don't Need This up there for me too.
Love 'Blue'
