ABBA's physical split (182,567 overall): Specialists - 147,462 [80.77%] Supermarkets - 30,648 [16.79%] Independents - 4,457 [2.44%] Ed's physical split in his first week (94,527 overall): Specialists - 71,245 [75.37%] Supermarkets - 22,423 [23.72%] Independents - 859 [0.91%] Today I learned that this data is even a thing that is published! Looks like the supermarkets weren't really that big of a factor after all then. (I was only going off anecdotal evidence people posted on here anyway)
November 13, 20214 yr HMV, Amazon, the official artist online stores, any other online stores associated with record labels (for example Recordstore / The Sound of Vinyl)! The list of albums below all managed 100+ sales in supermarkets this week! Ed sold 12,823. 3rd to 7th in the below list all sold from 1,000 to 1,999. Although it's evident that many supermarkets have cut back on stocking albums, there is seemingly still many stores that do have a wide range of recent releases! Cds in supermarkets won't be around much longer I'm sure. This Xmas with Ed, Adele, ABBA releasing feels like the last hurrah. Out of the main supermarkets they have nearly 6,000 locations across the UK (appreciate they don’t all sell CDs) but that list is tragic. Explains why my local Tesco does a Top 3 (!!) shoved in on the bottom shelf of where the sell the books from. And I agree, I think after this Christmas we won’t see physicals in supermarkets any more and there are not enough HMV stores to mop up the sales lost from supermarkets.

November 13, 20214 yr I saw Kylie Disco Guest List Edition in Morrisons today. I hope a few sold. Not sure at all what to expect her sales to be. I am hoping for over 10,000 but sure as it seems some bundles won't be shipped until 10th Dec. She usually does ok from supermarkets and hmv so let's see. I am guessing if not great mid weeks on Monday then BMG are reactive and have something to unleash, like a cassette haha. Promo tonight on J Ross

November 13, 20214 yr Just seems surprising that the supermarkets would apparently stock ABBA so much more prominently than Ed. Maybe that, if true, is a direct sign of 'No.6 Collaborations Project' being a momentum-killing move from him, if its lower physical sales than his previous albums, despite that being inevitable, maybe put off supermarkets from promoting the new album as much. (It no doubt would have sold far worse than his last album regardless but a bigger supermarket push would have helped!) I dunno, I can see why ABBA would more likely appeal to the typical demographic who would be more likely to buy a physical product. I think if I was marketing in a supermarket I'd choose it over Ed.
November 13, 20214 yr ABBA have a very broad all ages appeal that lends itself to stocking in supermarkets. Yes Ed Sheeran does also appeal to the mums and nans crowd but not to the extent that ABBA do.
