I fell in love with the 'Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)' album in lockdown, that includes 'Ashes To Ashes' and its memorable video

Ashes To Ashes is one of those songs where I still find something new after multiple listens, so there's every chance I'd rank it higher if this were repeated in a few years' time.

Under Pressure, by contrast, is yet another superstar collaboration that doesn't quite live up to its billing. The bassline and piano intro are the best bits and in turn I'd actually rate Ice Ice Baby as a better #1.

Genuinely thought I gave Ashes To Ashes my 30, I know I definitely took my time finalising the top few spots!

NO 17- 238 POINTS

I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) Whitney Houston (Voter: Doctor Blind- 1 point, West- 4 points, Riser- 20 points, Donnahjaneymack- 25 points, Jimwatts- 24 points, Danvember- 6 points, Colm- 23 points, n4yr- 28 points, Nina West- 21 points, Gooddelta- 8 points, …Ready for it- 16 points, Bjork- 17 points, Gezza- 15 points, Jester- 30 points)- No 1 for 2 weeks in June 1987

Whitney leaves the rate here with the third most popular chart topper of 1987. It marked her only time she did TOTP between the start of her career and 1999 and convinced Jester to award this 30 points.

Careless Whisper is good... but A Different Corner is better.

For me, I Wanna Dance With Somebody has become one of those over-played 80s hits that I'd quite happily never listen to again.

Only 13 voters for Careless Whisper - I’m surprised. Not too disappointed though as I like all my 26-30 to a similar level and the 26-29 are all still in.

IWDWS is great but sooo overplayed.

Careless Whisper is good... but A Different Corner is better.

How true! ^_^

IWDWS is probably the most overplayed UK number 1 ever. -_-

I think I'm a bit lucky to not lose anything in the top 20 yet.

I Wanna Dance With Somebody is rather cheesy as a lot of late 80s dance-pop is, but still a good song.

Careless Whisper is a good ballad.

Careless Whisper is an unreal song, lyrically perfect and he wrote it when he was 17, a timeless classic!

Ashes to Ashes is amazing.

I Wanna Dance With Somebody grew on me over the years. It's a joy.

oh really thought Whitney would be easily top 10

not a fan of Careless whisper, cheesy in a bad way :D much preferred his later ballads like One more try or You have been loved

Ashes To Ashes is total classic, Under Pressure less so, but it topped my charts and I bought it as I did the great Careless Whisper (but A Different Corner and later ballads are better). Whitney's out :yahoo: I am just so sick of hearing it*, it never seems to go away (and it was a top 10 personal chart fave at the time). Saving All My Love For You anyday for me.....

(* I offer as proof I just walked into my bedroom with Radio 2 on and the bloody thing was playing 11.08 am, I couldn't even get one hour without hearing it from making my comment! :P )

It's funny how overplay changes perceptions. 20 years ago I'd love to have heard I Wanna Dance... on the radio as much as The Bodyguard songs, and even now I wish it were as overplayed as Higher Love is.

So onto the third most popular No 1 of 1981, a song which chimed with the riots in the summer of that year and deposed just in time for the Royal Wedding. 5 of us placed it in our top 10 with Rabbitfurcoat giving it 30 points.
