Not bad guesses so far, but not quite there!

There are 2 songs each from Blur and Pulp to come and 3 from Oasis (due to my self imposed limit for a max of 4 from each).

13. McAlmont & Butler – Yes

McAlmontandButlerYes.jpg

Release: 1995 Chart Peak: 8

Yes is the glorious debut single from McAlmont (late of Theives) and Butler (late of Suede) and impressively charted within the top 10 on release. Yes was the first song that Butler wrote after leaving Suede and he met David McAlmont in a Jazz cafe and asked him to provide the vocal for the song.

It remains such an uplifting song and is damn near perfect.

Everything about Yes is perfect. James Dean Bradfield wanted A Design for Life to sound like Yes so they used the same producer - Mike Hedges.

12. Oasis - Live Forever

Live_Forever_Single_Cover.jpg

Release: 1994 Chart Peak: 10

Live Forever is the masterpiece single from Oasis's debut album Definitely Maybe. Their third single and the first to reach the top 10 (a top 10 run that would continue until 2008!), Live Forever was first written in 1991 by Noel Gallagher before Oasis was even formed.

This has been named the greatest song of all time by Q magazine, the greatest Indie anthem ever by NME and the best Oasis track by Pitchfork. Still, it falls short of my top 10 as 2 more Oasis tracks are to come and there just isn't room for 3 Oasis songs in the top tier. Still, it represents Definitely Maybe on this chart with style.

A true classic.

Yes is a stunning single, it's just so joyous and was definitely one of my favourites of the era.

Amazing single, so anthemic

It would definitely be in my top 10 above Wonderwall (guess thats still to come)

Live Forever is absolutely amazing. The real problem for me between the first two Oasis albums is that Liam's voice was must more 'indie sneer' on DM. The whole ending guitar piece is great. I have read that it was shortened. Does anyone know if it was every released in any form?

Live Forever is easily the song that broke them. I remember I had maybe, 2 or 3 friends that liked Supersonic and Shakermaker but when Live Forever came out that turned in to nearly everyone.

It's a great song but not my favourite by them (and it's not Wonderwall either)

Both “Yes” and “Live Forever” are brilliant and hopelessly optimistic (god I miss the optimism of the 1990s) - until Suedehead entered “Falling” into BJSC I had absolutely no idea that McAlmont & Butler had released anything else, just assumed it was a one hit thing that never came to anything. I'm a sucker for those lush strings.
Live Forever is one of Oasis' best, and Yes is one of the greatest records of the 90's, it's right up there with absolutely any record anyone cares to rate. Epic, soaring and wall of sound, and what a vocal!

11. The Bluetones - Slight Return

Slight_Return_Bluetones.jpg

Release: 1996 Chart Peak: 2

Slight Return was re-released in 1996 and promptly charted at number 2 (pesky Spaceman!). The second single from Expecting To Fly, it is by far their biggest hit and literally the only Bluetones song I like.

I think this is fantastic indie track and it makes me back to a wonderful moment in time involving a huge snowball fight and Dartmoor!

Recap 20-11

11 The Bluetones – Slight Return

12 Oasis – Live Forever

13 McAlmont & Butler – Yes

14 The Verve – The Drugs Don’t Work

15 Elastica – Waking Up

16 Shed 7 – Chasing Rainbows

17 Mansun – Wide Open Space

18 Sleeper – Inbetweener

19 Dodgy – Good Enough

20 Ocean Colour Scene – The Day We Caught The Train

Slight Return is great but agree is the only classic song they did

I remember buy8ing the parent album and being very very disappointed

I loved Slight Return at the time. I listened it to recently but it didn't love up to the memory.
Love Britpop in general, but I was far too young to appreciate it at the time so playing catch up, but I have a lot of love for Live Forever (one of the best songs with Liam on lead vocals) and The Drugs Don't Work, and Slight Return is a lovely song I discovered quite a few years later and I wish it were more highly rated. Looking forward to the top 10!
Slight Return is ok but Marblehead Johnson is my fave single from The Bluetones, I bought the single on cassette at the time.

Just missed out Part 4

So the last just missed out is dedicated to Pulp, Blur and Oasis. These 3 tracks would have been in the top 50 if I had not restricted myself to 4 tracks from each (or in the case of Oasis, I put an embargo on Be Here Now).

Pulp - Lipgloss

Lipgloss_Single.jpg
Release: 1994 Chart Peak: 50

Lipgloss was a few firsts for Pulp - the first single from His N Hers, the first single released on Island Records and their first charting song. It's when all that you live off is lipgloss and cigarettes......

Blur - Girls and Boys

Release: 1994 Chart Peak: 5

I was rather restricted with the sheer number of brilliant Blur singles! This was the first single from the Britpop masterpiece album Parklife and rarely (for the time) entered the chart at a top 5 debut then fell down the chart fairly quickly.

Its rather club 18-30s sex in the 90s Blur.

Oasis - Stand By Me

Stand_By_Me_(Oasis).jpg
Release: 1997 Chart Peak: 2

By far the best single from the bloated indulgent Be Here Now, Stand By Me charted at number 2 behind Candle In The Wind. The harmonies on this song are superb and it's only been slightly ruined by the Halifax advert........!

Top 10 from tomorrow!
