Biography

Before the thumping club hit "Sweet but Psycho" shot up charts around the world in 2018, Albanian-American artist Ava Max almost quit the music industry: "I was like, if this doesn't do it, then I think I'm going to have to pick another career, because I've been at this for 15 years," she told Apple Music. But her perseverance finally paid off thanks to her slinky hooks and sweet-salty delivery that can both sting and seduce with just one syllable. Born Amanda Koci in 1994, the singer/songwriter grew up in Wisconsin and Virginia before trying her hand in L.A., first at age 14 and then again at 17. She spent the next several years handing out demos and getting rejected by a number of labels and producers. But in 2014, she met producer/songwriter Cirkut, who helped her find her voice. She took on the stage name Ava Max—to honour both feminine and masculine qualities—and solidified the transformation with her asymmetrical "Max Cut" hairstyle. This theme of dichotomy extends into her music, with the cheeky feminist twist of "Sweet but Psycho" and then her 2020 full-length debut, Heaven & Hell. The concept album—split between bright, Gaga-esque disco anthems like "Kings & Queens" and the darker dance-pop fizz of "Salt"—conveys two powerful messages: be yourself and don't give up. "I would not be talking about female empowerment ... or having this much of a voice," she said, "if I didn't go through those obstacles." - Apple Music

Surprised My Head & My Heart is so high, although it did hang around for a long time in the spring.

Decent tune although not one of Ava's best.

Dreams was a nice enough song to get a TikTok boost I guess, certainly are worse songs it could've happened to although it wouldn't've been my choice of FM song to boost.

Glad to see MHAMH up here for Ava Max, certainly one of her more interesting songs to date.

Do you guys think “Streets” by Doja Cat will be in the list somewhere?

Biography

Even in the crowded field of mournful singer-rappers, Polo G stands out. It’s not the depth of his trauma—poverty, hunger, gang violence, drug addiction, and prison, all before his 20th birthday—or even his willingness to share it. It’s his focus. Listen to a Polo record—“Heartless,” “Pop Out,” “Through da Storm,” “Go Stupid”—and you can hear an artist obsessed by craft. The flow is dense but melodic, the lyrics plainspoken but crammed with imagery and detail, more in tune with classic rap virtuosity than the loose impressionism that ruled most of the 2010s. And in a culture of rappers making records back-to-back-to-back to capitalize on interest, Polo has been borderline stingy: no mixtapes, no bloated deluxe editions three months after the initial drop, albums running closer to 40 minutes than 80. He’s said in the past that he doesn’t freestyle, he writes. And when he’s done writing—that’s when he goes to record. And if he doesn’t love what comes out at the session? Like, love-it love? He keeps it to himself.

Born Taurus Bartlett in 1999, Polo was raised in Chicago public housing, coming up through the rough, quick-delivery style of local hip-hop known as drill. Like local heroes G Herbo, Lil Durk, and, to a lesser extent, Chief Keef, Polo’s primary subject was pain: personal, racial, generational. But as compelling and tightly wound as his debut was (2019’s Die a Legend), he knew you could only get so much mileage out of the same story, and took his follow-up—2020’s THE GOAT—as a chance to evolve, exploring more pop- and club-oriented sounds while retaining the intensity that makes his performances shine. - Apple Music

This being such an instantly big smash was still one of the more "I'm too old for this" moments of the year.

Not that it's a bad song but nothing really special.

My Head & My Heart is really great actually - at first I thought it was a bi naff with the ATC Europop sample but actually it’s really clever.

Rapstar is one of the year’s best of its genre.

I like this one, it grew on me! Not both his Laroi collabs stalling in the #41-50 section last year :drama:

Biography

Måneskin is a beloved and critically-acclaimed young Italian 4-piece-band aged from 18 to 21: Damiano (vocals), Victoria (bass), Thomas (guitar) and Ethan (drums). Måneskin means “moonlight” in Danish, a tribute to the bassist’s origin. Group members have known each other since middle school, but they started playing together only in 2015. Their sound is marked by different musical influences: a mix of rock, rap/hip hop, reggae, funky and pop, tied together by the soul voice of the frontman Damiano. 2018 the band released "Morirò da Re" (triple platinum) and "Torna a casa" (quadruple platinum) to anticipate "Il ballo della vita" (double platinum), their first studio album entirely written by Måneskin. “Il ballo della vita” went straight in at #1 on Italian top charts with more than 170 million streams. Their 80-concert-tour with 66 sold-out shows and more than 140.000 tickets sold both in Italy and Europe well represents their high-impact on the current national musical scene. Then they moved to London where they began working on their last brand new album "Teatro d'ira - “Vol I”, entirely written by themself, released this year on March 19th and anticipated by “Vent’anni” (platinum) and “Zitti e buoni” (platinum), the song was presented at Sanremo Festival and won it. During Sanremo Festival Måneskin announced four concerts in Italian big Arenas (December 2021) and ticket went sold out in few days; In May they won the #Eurovision song contest with "Zitti e Buoni". - Spotify

I ended up liking Rapstar quite a bit, definitely a far bigger song than this position indicates

Hmm, I enjoyed this for a short while but the vocal quickly ended up being quite hard to sit through. Glad their other hit has ended up higher.
So weird to see a Eurovision winner do well nowadays although this Beggin' cover is way too jarring for me unfortunately. Mind you I wasn't a massive fan of the Madcon version either.
