Biography

As the energetically punctuated Wham!, George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley combined youthful high spirits with a polished union of disco and soul to become one of the defining pop acts of the 1980s. Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou (Michael) and Andrew John Ridgeley first met in secondary school as 12-year-olds back in 1975. Their 1981 debut as Wham!, the pop-rap snack “Wham Rap! (Enjoy What You Do?),” preached the joy of life on welfare amid rampant British unemployment. As the group’s principal songwriter and frontman, Michael’s exuberant turn on “Young Guns (Go for It!)” precipitated Wham!’s vibrant, post-disco debut, Fantastic, in 1983, which parlayed the duo’s carefree vigor into the glistening hedonism of “Club Tropicana.” Returning in 1984 with the emphatic “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” the group folded Detroit soul into an effervescent pop marvel that sent Wham! to the summit of the U.S. pop charts. Michael took over production on their follow-up album, Make It Big, whose modernized Motown sound on the brooding boogie cut “Everything She Wants” and the resplendent pop-soul of “Careless Whisper” cemented his standing as one of pop’s foremost performer/composers. Ending 1984 with the career-defining synth-pop torch song “Last Christmas,” Wham! harked back to their feel-good beginnings with “I’m Your Man” in 1985 before amicably parting to allow Michael to focus on his solo career. Their final album, 1986’s Music from the Edge of Heaven, featuring their last single “The Edge of Heaven,” wrote the postscript on a prodigious four-year passage that flourished into an indelible pop legacy. - Apple Music

Biography

A Canadian singer and dancer, Tate McRae makes emotive alternative pop. Following her viral emergence in 2017, she released her debut EP, All the Things I Never Said, featuring the Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell co-write "Tear Myself Apart."

Born Tate Rosner McRae in 2003, the Calgary native initially started out as a dancer at age six and studied at the Alberta Ballet. She entered her first dance competition in 2011 and later took the silver medal at the final round of the Youth America Grand Prix in New York City in 2015. Out of the competition, she earned a scholarship for a two-week intensive course at the Berlin State Ballet School. The following year, McRae competed on FOX's So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation, finishing in third place. Along with dance, she developed an interest in singing and acting, appearing as the voice of the rag doll Spot Splatter Splash in Nickelodeon's Lalaloopsy animated series. In 2017, she launched her own YouTube channel by posting a song she had written in one day. The video went viral and helped her build buzz. More songs followed, and she eventually signed with RCA. In 2020, she released her debut EP, All the Things I Never Said. Included on the album was the song "Tear Myself Apart," co-written by Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell. Additional singles following throughout the year including "You Broke Me First" and "Lie to Me." - Apple Music

OLD Christmas music in the Year End!!!!

That incredibly unnecessary Rasputin mix remains incredibly unnecessary.

Yes Rasputin *.* Probably the most criminal #11 peak this year, and there were a few of them!
Wham! still to come then? Probably top 50 by the time last week's data is included too :o

Maybe even Top 40 for Wham! at this rate given it’s still to come and will be missing 130k. :o

Enjoyed Rasputin even though the re-make didn’t do very much with it.

Biography

Lady Gaga

Some may dismiss pop as inauthentic. But for Lady Gaga—one of popular culture’s greatest, most extravagant creations—the inauthenticity is the point. No artist has more defiantly embodied that provocation this century than the one born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta (in New York in 1986). Never wedded to the same image—one minute wearing a dress made of raw meat at the MTV VMAs, the next a coat of Kermit the Frog puppets on German TV—Gaga personifies pop’s surface obsessions while simultaneously upending them. In a sense, her creative identity had crystallized by age 21, having been a child pianist, aspiring actor, and burlesque performer. Each of these facets powered her career’s most distinct parts: the celebrity fascination of her first two albums, 2008’s The Fame and 2009’s The Fame Monster; the subversive layering of 2011’s Born This Way and 2013’s ARTPOP; the sincere reverence of 2014’s Cheek to Cheek, her jazz standards album with Tony Bennett; and the rootsier songwriting of 2016’s Joanne. If 2009’s “Paparazzi” reveled in the flashes, then “Born This Way” celebrated inner light: In translating her diffuse identity into world-conquering art, Gaga has become a beacon to anyone else who’s felt like an outsider. Her loyal following—a.k.a. Little Monsters—has affirmed a deep connection to her message of self-love and self-expression, despite pop’s fickleness and her chameleonic exterior. She played out a simpler version of her path to fame in the 2018 remake of A Star Is Born: But while her character’s ascent was abetted by her lover, Gaga’s was all her own. - Apple Music

Bradley Cooper

Actor Bradley Cooper, star of numerous Hollywood blockbusters, was revealed to be a talented singer and musician when he played hard-drinking country-rocker Jackson Maine opposite Lady Gaga in the 2018 remake of A Star Is Born, his directorial debut.

Born in 1975 in Philadelphia, Cooper decided at a young age to become an actor. After graduating from Georgetown with a BA in English, he earned a master's in acting at the Actors Studio Drama School in New York City. His first TV appearance came in 1999 with a guest role on Sex and the City, and his cinematic debut in 2001's Wet Hot American Summer. He became better known with his recurring role as journalist Will Tippin on J.J. Abrams' popular espionage series Alias. Increasingly substantial film roles followed before his breakthrough performance in the R-rated comedy The Hangover, which spawned two sequels. Popular with audiences for his rugged good looks and warm, down-to-earth personality, he made the leap to leading man status with the sci-fi thriller Limitless, and solidified his reputation with films such as The Place Beyond the Pines, Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, Serena, and American Sniper. He became one of a select few actors to be nominated for an Academy Award in for three consecutive years. Cooper made his directorial debut in 2018 with A Star Is Born, the second remake of the 1937 film. In the movie, which also featured Lady Gaga, he played hard-drinking country-rocker Jackson Maine. Cooper modeled the character's voice on Sam Elliott, and his mannerisms on Eddie Vedder. He undertook 18 months of coaching, some of it with Lukas Nelson, in order to become a bona fide singer and musician. His hard work paid off, as his performance was praised both by critics and by his co-star, and the film was tipped for Oscar success. - Apple Music

Biography

Leeds, U.K.-based vocalist Tom Zanetti began his career in the music industry primarily as a club promoter; his breakthrough night, Insomnia, became the most successful night at Leeds nightclub Mission for five consecutive years. Discovering he had a knack for club promotion, he went on to set-up a wider reaching events company called Sleepin Is Cheatin. His brand grew so much that a local television channel filmed a documentary, titled Sic Life, that tracked his daily working life. On the side, Zanetti would lend his vocals to a number of Leeds-based U.K. house producers. Eventually he released a few U.K. house singles under his own name, including "Darlin" and "You Want Me," both produced by friend and past collaborator Chris Lorenzo. - Apple Music

Late to this (just call me Redsox) but this is as messy as I’d anticipated. All these ancient songs-some of which I didn’t even know were doing this well due to the disparity between this chart and the weekly one. I was hoping to see Anywhere Away From Here feature and it’s nice to see it sneak in at 100, though it’ll probably fall out by the time the most recent week is added. I’m amazed though that it’s this high considering all the old tracks ahead of it.

One year at no.88 is ridiculous for a six week no.1 as well.

Biography

British rapper KSI made as much of a name for himself with his online videos and boxing as he did with his music, but the multi-faceted entertainer wore many hats as he built his empire of one. He moved from satirical songs in his earliest days into more nuanced songwriting and production on his breakthrough 2015 single "Lamborghini," refining his sound even more on subsequent projects like the venomous 2018 EP Disstracktions.

Born Olajide Olatunji, KSI was known as KSIOlajideBT in 2008 when he became a regular video game commentator, uploading his videos to the web, most of them focused on the FIFA series. It was a footballer who inspired him to try his hand at rap as Emile Heskey was the topic of "Heskey Time," a satirical rap that kicked off a series of football-mocking songs, including 2012's "Sweaty Goals" with Randolph. In 2013 he joined rapper Sway on his single "No Sleep," and in 2014 he appeared on producer Droideka's track "Get Hyper." In 2015 he dropped his own track, "Lamborghini" featuring P-Money, along with "Keep Up," which was also the title cut for 2016's debut KSI EP. His book KSI: I Am a Bellend appeared that same year and was released under the title KSI: I Am a Tool in the United States. He was briefly signed to Island Records but cut ties with the label after the release of 2016 EP Jump Around. The next several years found KSI staying busy with content creating, boxing, and a growing music career, working independently to trickle out singles like 2017's "Creature" and projects like the 2018 EP Disstracktions. He became more involved in boxing, escalating beefs with other online video creators into full-on white-collar boxing matches. Particularly spectacular was his dispute with American Internet personality and occasional music-maker Logan Paul. In 2019, KSI signed a deal with RBC Records, immediately issuing his first single "Down Like That" on November 7 of that year. The song featured cameo appearances from Rick Ross, S-X, and Lil Baby and peaked at number ten on the U.K. Singles Chart. He followed this success with second single, "Wake Up Call," featuring Trippie Redd, in January of 2020. His debut full-length, Dissimulation, arrived in May of that year.
