Curve's “Horror Head” is probably my fave from the Top 40, at #31. Gorgeous.

Unfortunately I can't find a full copy of the chart for 12 July 1992, this has some clips though, including Bruno Brookes saying 'top tits comin' at ya' instead of 'hits'.

Some Justice by Urban Shakedown is great too around this time (#23 in the UK chart), great percussion and vocal in it. Its a bit sad the rave era would be ending soon.
They are finally showing the TOTP Story Of 1991, Saturday 745pm on BBC 2. :cheer:

About time!

was Rhythm Is A Dancer ever performed on TOTP?!!!

From memory no i don't think so

is that why it climbed so slowly?

Not especially- TOTP had lost most of its effect (in terms of boosting sales) by this point.

25TH JULY

jimmy-nail-f85540b7-ab36-459e-aab8-3a7b3214a85-resize-750.jpeg

Jimmy Nail digs his heels in at the top of the charts shifted another 72,000 copies as he was easily ahead of the field without any real challenge, Snap! manoeuvre dangerously 3-2 (42,000) but too far aware to pose a threat at present, “Rhythm Is A Dancer” is already there second biggest hit behind “The Power” which made No 1 two years ago.

The highest new entry of the week is predictably Madonna with her 16th single to debut inside the top 10 and her 26th top ten single in 8 years- an outstanding feat. “This Used To Be My Playground” is taken from her new film “A League Of Their Own” for which she hasn’t received a universal panning so things are looking up in that respect. It is planned to be a standalone single and won’t form part of her new album which is due for release in the autumn. It smashes in at No 5 (27,000) and is her 23rd straight Top ten single (excluded re-issues) which equals the record currently held by Cliff Richard for his run between 1960-65, and it’s an 8th top 10 single in the 90s drawing her level with New Kids On The Block as the record holders for the decade.

Culled together from demo’s and sessions Roy Oribison did before his death in 1988 and produced by Jeff Lynne “King Of Hearts” is the new album by the late star which will be released in a few weeks, and taken from it a song that you may remember being done by Cyndi Lauper in 89 “I Drove All Night”. The song was intended by the writers (Steinberg & Kelly) to be given to Orbison who did record it in 1988 but with Lauper releasing her version the label decided to sit on the recording until now. With a promo featuring “Beverley Hills 90210” star Jason Priestley and film actress Jennifer Connelly it certainly has enough fans, the song lifts 11-8 (22,000) to become his 12th top 10 hit.

Was (Not Was) have only been in the top 10 once, back in 1987 with “Walk The Dinosaur” which perhaps reflected the fact that their greatest hits album “Hello Dad…I’m In Jail” could only make No 66 when it was released last month and has since vanished. It’s going to be re-issued next month now because “Shake Your Head” has turned into a surprise hit for the group floating 13-10 (16,000). It was originally a single for the group in 1983 though it failed to chart here and featured the vocals of Black Sabbath’s Ozzy Osbourne and an unknown singer called Madonna who auditioned for the part but was unsuccessful. The proposal was that her vocals be restored for this version but the lady herself refused consent so the group turned to actress Kim Basinger who duly obliged and is now credited. It’s remixed by Steve “Silk” Hurley who is himself on a bit of a hot streak at present.

Elsewhere the Smart E’s drop 2-3 (34,000) as Prince sprints 7-4 (30,000) whilst Urban Hype hold at No 6 (24,000). Better news for the Shamen who lift 9-7 (23,000) but it’s all over for Erasure who slump 4-9 (20,000).

1- AIN’T NO DOUBT- Jimmy Nail (72,000)

2- RHYTHM IS A DANCER- Snap! (42,000)

3- SESAME’S TREET- Smart E’s (34,000)

4- SEXY MF/ STROLLIN- Prince/ NPG (30,000)

5- THIS USED TO BE MY PLAYGROUND- Madonna (27,000)

6- A TRIP TO TRUMPTON- Urban Hype (24,000)

7- L.S.I- The Shamen (23,000)

8- I DROVE ALL NIGHT- Roy Orbison (22,000)

9- ABBA-ESQUE E.P- Erasure (20,000)

1ST AUGUST

As you were at the top of the charts with Jimmy Nail on cruise control at No 1 though he’s peaked in terms of sales, they’re off 12% to 63,000, but he’s still easily outpacing Snap! who hold at No 2 (47,000) with only a small increase to brag about. Madonna completes the top 3 as “This Used To Be My Playground” accelerates 5-3 (33,000) but her 8th chart topper is still some way off.

Three other tracks make positive moves, Was (Not Was) half their position 10-5 (23,000) which is now their biggest hit, The Shamen creep 7-6 (23,000) and Roy Orbison still snaps at their heels 8-7 (21,000). Meanwhile the Smart E’s slip 3-4 (28,000), Urban Hype reverse 6-8 (18,000) and Prince falls 4-9 (18,000).

The only new song to discuss is Michael Jackson’s fourth cut from his “Dangerous” album which rises 12-10 (15,000) this week. “Who Is It” has been released to coincide with his world tour that you can catch in the UK this week, the album also improves 17-9 as promotion finally gets underway for the event. He’s now made his first four singles from the album top 10 hits, better than he did with “Bad” you might recall, the fourth single from that album peaked at a lowly No 21 (the mighty “Man In The Mirror”).

4- SESAME’S TREET- Smart E’s (28,000)

I really like Roy Orbison's version of Drove All Night, and it was the first version of the song I knew. I prefer it to the Cyndi Lauper version. Its a great emotive and epic pop song anyway!

LSI is another good Shamen song!

'Who Is It' is my favourite addition to the top 10 from those last couple of posts!

Nirvana's 'Lithium' was one of the newies outside of it, they played a clip on TOTP  how annoying that it stalled at #11, although an iconic accompanying album of course.

'Love U More' was a good discovery for me this week although it sounded so familiar - turns out that the Steps Artist Forum sent their cover of it to the AF Idol contest on here last year

My all time favourite MJ single  The original and The Most Patient Mix are both sublime.

Major love for Prince and Snap - plus I used to love Shake Your Head at the time, albeit not so much now.

Not especially- TOTP had lost most of its effect (in terms of boosting sales) by this point.

Why was that?

There’s a lot of random acts entering the top 10 by this stage albeit still climbers where they held back a lot by this stage?

oh my that has to be one of Madonna's worst songs, I generally love her ballads and Live to Tell must be my fav song of the 80s

but Playground is so sappy and saccharine... it did go to #1 in the US if I recall it correctly...

I do prefer Cyndi Lauper's version but Roy Orbison's is nice too although I generally hate post-humous records

Not crazy about that top 10 overall, songs are ok but nothing extraordinary

And lets forget that Steps cover of Love U More :D

was Rhythm Is A Dancer ever performed on TOTP?!!!

No- was that because Turbo B didn't want the song to be released? I know there was some grief about how bloody serious he was that ‘Rhythm Is A Dancer’ !

Oh god, thoughts & prayers that you had to endure the Steps version. :(

Glad that you like it - it's the topline melody that comes in at the start of the single mix (below) that does it for me, so nostaglic and optimistic at the same time. I think you'd maybe enjoy “Perfect Motion” too (charts at #18 in October 1992), suprisingly I found that one to be a bit of a floor filler when I played it at a wedding. Amazing considering it's 30 years old now !

I don't really rate that Madonna song either, but a top notch track from MJ! Somewhat underrated.

Also fantastic stuff from The Shamen, and KIM F***ING BASSINGER!!

We don't talk about that #1.

The success of that Jimmy Nail song was mind-boggling.

I hadn't realised Kim Basinger and Ozzy Osborne appeared on Shake Your Head - if Ozzy had been officially credited, that would have been his first Top 10 hit as a solo artist (which eventually came with Changes in 2003).

The label wanted "Rhythm Is A Dancer" as a first single from the album in late 1991 but it was indeed Turbo B that hated the track and his "Cancer" line so much that he kicked off about it and the label went with "The Colour Of Love" which bombed in most places. That meant that he was overruled for the second release but ultimately he left the group before the end of 1992.
