The album includes Phoebe Bridgers (of course) and a Mitski collaboration.

Muna was stuck. In 2019, the band — lead songwriter and vocalist Katie Gavin, 29, and multi-instrumentalists and producers Naomi McPherson, 29, and Josette Maskin, 28 — was at a rare co-writing session with their new friend Mitski, who was helping them refine an unfinished tune called “No Idea.” At the time, it consisted only of a verse, a chorus, and a vague, half-joking concept: “It was going to be our dyke boy-band song,” says Gavin, with her (and the band’s) trademark wit.

Mitski liked the idea, encouraging the trio to home in on Y2K-era Max Martin keyboard sounds and helping them write a second verse, but “No Idea” was still far from complete. Muna cycled through different iterations of the song: disco, funk, electronic. They obsessed over the bass sound, which felt “trapped in a certain groove,” in McPherson’s words. Eventually, with the help of a few select reference points (LCD Soundsystem’s “Oh Baby,” Charlotte Gainesbourg’s “Deadly Valentine”) and a new, arpeggiated synth riff, Muna arrived at a finished product for “No Idea,” which sounds like a cross between vintage Daft Punk and the Backstreet Boys circa “Larger Than Life,” with a dash of the Ghostbusters theme song — and not quite like anything Muna have released before.

Silk Chiffon was a definite SOTY contender last year, Anything But Me isn't quite as instant but feels very classic Muna! The Mitski co-write sounds v interesting, hyped for that too

What I Want!!! Absolutely huge.

Need to listen to the rest of this, but I just have that on repeat so far.

WHAT a song.

What I Want is one of my favourite things I've heard from them

Looking forward to hearing the rest at some point today!

oh can this blow up on tiktok or something!! amazing! <3
Half way through and I'm loving this album. MUNA are a band I have always liked (even loved) but I never really give them the attention they deserve.

What I Want is absolutely everything.

The run of Hannnndllleee Mehhhhhhh / No Idea / Solid however is my jam.

The fact Muna aren't more known is a crime because they're f***ing fantastic, everything they put out is just so so good! What I Want, Solid and No idea are my three faves from the album

You're gonna say that I'm on a high horse

I think that my horse

Is regular-sized

They've done it again    What I Want is the perfect bop but right now I'm all about Home By Now, it sounds like I Know A Place's younger sister and I cannot get enough of it  Some of the less synthy songs are gonna have to grow on me but my faves are Kind Of Girl, Anything But Me, Silk Chiffon (duh), Handle Me, and the two I've already mentioned.

I've not been that huge on their previous material (apart from 'Number One Fan') but there are now 3 singles that I've really enjoyed from this - 'Silk Chiffon' and 'Anything But Me' were both tunes and just heard 'Home By Now' the other day and think it may be my fave to date by them <3 I didn't particularly care for 'Kind Of Girl' but 3 out of 4 is not bad, I think I will check out the album.

I hope people can just enjoy the music without needing chart validation tho just saying xx (see also: Rina Sawayama, may just be a personal pet peeve but I'm not sure why people keep talking about the charts with these artists who have never charted and have shown no sign of that changing). I guess they may at least make the album chart this time ~

People can still hope a song becomes a hit, despite knowing otherwise (and being ok when it isn't etc..). This is a predominently chart centered forum, I don't see the harm in people saying they'd like to see a song become a hit, even if they know it won't be one.
Think it just takes an artist to build their profile and fan base to get into the chart. For example the new Rina song sounds very like lady gaga and if released by her would be a hit!

Yet another brilliant album from MUNA! 'Home By Now' grew on me so much (that middle 8 *.* ) and 'What I Want' is such a bop.

This is their first album to chart in the US (at #188) and their first Top 100 in the UK (#61) which I'd say is a pretty good result considering that they're independent (their previous two albums did worse despite being released by the major label RCA). I'm pleased for them and I hope they continue building up a larger fanbase.

I pre-ordered the olive green vinyl back in March, but the store I ordered it from sent me the standard black instead... I messaged them about it and they fully refunded me for it because they didn't have any more copies of the green version. I can't complain about that result really, even though I had been looking forward to the green vinyl... MUNA for free :o (it cost £27.94 in the first place).

I’m enjoying this album but I’m not finding What I Want to be all that tbh. The double hit of Runner’s High / Home By Now is where it’s at for me

Well I definitely see why 'What I Want' has been the fave on here! (and I'm not mad about it, it is a tune)

I'm with dandy* on 'Runner's High' and 'Home By Now' being the clear standout tracks though, I loveee the production on 'Runner's High' in particular and both songs are really well written (I don't often take as much notice of lyrics as I should but those two have hit me). 'Shooting Star' is a pretty stunning closing track too and I think 'Loose Garment' is going to be a slow burning grower, has some lovely strings.

There was a run of songs I didn't really care for in the middle of the album (tracks 5 to 8) but it starts and ends really strongly so that's still more than half of the album that I'm here for, I'll take that after being pretty meh on most of what I'd heard from them before this era - the first four tracks all sound really different but great in their own ways!
