Just dawned on me how Amanda Reifer (featured on that Kendrick track at #6) is the bird from Cover Drive!

How utterly random, after literally 10 years in the wilderness.

I just realised myself Cover Drive were not from the UK :o always thought they were a UK act, as they were like huge in the UK only

but looks like they were from Barbados

Sunday's Number Ones session (see separate thread) will include Babylon Zoo's Spaceman so it would be rather neat if Sam Ryder makes it on Friday

It’s a sign Suedey! A sign from outer space. 👽

it still surprises me that cover drive were dropped after one album despite having decent selling singles

wasn't it cos the album flopped despite the success in singles (even a #1 single)

Loved Cover Drive - but looking back the album tanked and the singles before and after ‘Twilight’ didn’t hang around for long.

You're all forgetting their collaboration with Far East Movement. The two most iconic pop groups of the 10's on one song was absolutely magical.
Twilight was my easy favourite, I still love it, but looking back it seems weird it got to No.1 here, presumably a masterstroke of timing and good airplay. I don't know of that many people that speak fondly of it, and many people don't remember it. I wasn't a massive fan of anything else they released.

They were signed to Global Radios record label - it got hammered 24/7 on all their stations so was a bit of a fake #1 as the level of support it received would never have been as forthcoming if they were not signed to Global. Pleased it made the top but agree it’s sadly a bit of a forgotten hit.

I always liked Sparks.

Loved 'Sparks' too. Sadly it fell down the charts from its no.4 entry at lightning speed.

did Twilight hit #1 with low sales? I recall it being a Jan/Feb release

According to Wikipedia it sold 76,109 in its first week, ended up as end of year no.75 and has sold 400,000 as of Oct 2020.

Cover Drive's first 2 singles were both awful imo ('Twilight' being the worst, extremely irritating song). I much preferred the rest of their hits as people began to stop caring about them although I can't say I massively love any of them. Sparks > Explode > Turn Up The Love >>> Lick Ya Down > Twilight.

But yes I do recall that they were another act like Lawson who had a couple of big hits out of the gate almost entirely down to Capital playing them to death due to being signed to Global's own label.

Elis James and John Robins (now on 5live) recently spoke about them being forced to play Lawson on Radio X by Global even though it didn't fit with the rest of the station's music .

They also mentioned lovelytheband's 'Broken' being an odd choice to play on Radio X, but I don't think that had anything to do with Global.

radio x playing lawson lmao, they did have some bangers though

The Wanted got heavily pushed too cause of Global.
