Here is the 3rd instalment of our search for the worst #1 hit ever!

This is being compiled in conjunction with our #1 listening group (the sessions have now reached the early 00s), with a view to eventually running a rate to hopefully make an informed decision about what the worst #1 is taking into account all periods and types of record. An ambitious task I realise!

Anyway here is our list for the 1990s. It is somewhat longer than the 80s and pre 80s ones - not sure if we are getting harsher as a group or there genuinely were more stinkers as time went on.

Partners in Kryme - Turtle Power (1990)

Bombalurina - Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini (1990)

The Simpsons - Do The Bartman (1991)

Hale & Pace & The Stonkers - The Stonk (1991)

Color Me Badd - I Wanna Sex You Up (1991)

Right Said Fred - Deeply Dippy (1992)

Mr Blobby - Mr Blobby (1993)

Manchester United FC - Come On You Reds (1994)

Outhere Brothers - Don’t Stop (Wiggle Wiggle) (1995)

Robson & Jerome - Unchained Melody (1995)

Gary Barlow - Forever Love (1996)

Peter Andre - I Feel You (1996)

Boyzone - A Different Beat (1996)

Teletubbies - Teletubbies Say “Eh-Oh!” (1997)

Aqua - Doctor Jones (1998)

Another Level - Freak Me (1998)

Melanie B featuring Missy Elliott - I Want You Back (1998)

Spacedust - Gym And Tonic (1998)

911 - A Little Bit More (1999)

Boyzone - You Needed Me (1999)

Cliff Richard - The Millennium Prayer (1999)

Do please comment both on what you think has been included unfairly and what you think has been left out. All requests will be considered though not necessarily honoured of course! Remember that this is a group decision and in fact there a couple of things on there that I personally quite like. Also note that we are limiting the overall list to 1 song per artist.

I have updated the Spotify playlist of doom covering the full period since 1952. Note that a couple of them are “fake” versions and the delightful Stonk is not there at all.

Right Said Fred - Deeply Dippy (1992)

Outhere Brothers - Don’t Stop (Wiggle Wiggle) (1995)

Boyzone - A Different Beat (1996)

Aqua - Doctor Jones (1998)

Another Level - Freak Me (1998)

^^

These aren't that bad are they? Indeed the Boyzone one is probably one of their more tolerable ones!

Boyzone - A Different Beat (1996)

Aqua - Doctor Jones (1998)

I'd take out these two, Doctor Jones is a pretty highly regarded follow-up from Aqua for many Europop fans, and A Different Beat was actually really good, and quite a brave single for Boyzone sonically really! Who expected them to be drawing inspiration from African sounds as the follow up to their first No.1?

I would nominate Do The Bartman for inclusion too! Not sure if it's widely disliked though.

Surely the other 2 Robson and Jerome number 1 should be there too - awful!

I also nominate Colour Me Badd - I Wanna Sex You Up.

personally Do the Bartman is the worst #1 of the 90s

I'd switch Boyzone songs, their covers were the worst thing ever, especially Words and When the Going Gets...

I'd also add Spice Girls - Too Much to the list #sorrynotsorry

Colour Me badd is pretty decent, Boyzone's is one of their best, any of the others would fit in, Aqua's is fine, and my vague memories of the Peter Andre track is that it wasn't good or bad, it just was sort of in between.

Robson Jerome x 3, Iron maiden, Babe, Without You (mariah), KWS, Come On You Reds, Outhere Brothers, LOve Wont Wait, Eternal, Because We Want To, Flat Beat, Vengaboys, Westlife covers are all tracks I prefer not to hear. I realise some of them are beloved though....

I’d put Sure for Take That, and agree with Because We Want To and Flat Beat, but know these are popular with others!

I also personally dislike You Needed Me by Boyzone. I’m quite a fan of theirs but I don't get that one.

Oh and, yes at Come On You Reds too!

No Flat Eric slander please :nono:

'I Feel You' is probably the most forgettable chart topper I can think of, I still don't remember how it goes

I'd agree that Outhere Brothers, Aqua and Another Level don't belong there.

Boyzone DO but you have completely the wrong song - it should have been "You Needed Me" or "When The Going Gets The Tough"

The Mel B one is objectively dreadful, but I never fail to grin stupidly at the oh-so-edgy-at-the-time Missy Elliott rap and production being completely undermined by Mel's overpowering LEEDS accent. "Let meh hit this one before ah GEEEEERRRR"

I would totally endorse the dreadfully repetitive "Flat Beat" being added. Also nominating "Girlfriend" and "Do The Bartman".

Surely the other 2 Robson and Jerome number 1 should be there too - awful!

I also nominate Colour Me Badd - I Wanna Sex You Up.

Thee is a limit of one song per act. In the listen-throughs, we all felt that Unchained Melody was their worst effort by a comfortable margin.

Fair!

WT !%&"%"¤¤ with Turle Power? The song fits the film and only the crazy will think it is bad for what is it. Also Mr Blobby is good and nothing wrong with Doctor Jones.

Flat Beat is all kinds of amazing <3 bought the CD single and all :D

I also don't think the Mel B is that bad

Teletubbies and Mr Blobby deserve better x
Agreed :cheeseblock:

Mr Blobby is the first single that was bought for me as a Christmas present (I've still got it in my drawer even now, along with Taylor's scarf...) I'd endorse Do The Bartman though, as it's such a one-dimensional representation of the early Simpsons before they made Homer the true (anti)hero.

I'd agree with others that A Different Beat isn't Boyzone's worst - try You Needed Me or All That I Need instead. Also despite much competition from their later singles, I still haven't forgiven Westlife's If I Let You Go for blocking Alice Deejay by a tiny margin, plus the song really isn't great so I'd put that in.

Babe is the worst Take That. For Boyzone, The Going Gets Tough is awful so good shout and I agree with Come On You Reds from 1994 - appalling!

I’m crazy then as it’s bloody dreadful!

You Needed Me is the epitome of Boyzone, an insipid MOR 70s cover. I vote that for replacement if people are unhappy with the one already picked out.
