Actually that's exactly my top 2, my 30 and my 29, in the same exact order so cannot complain

 

Love both songs, both incredible classics but Common People is the correct winner

 

I've seen both bands live, Underworld played in this music festival in my hometown and was absolutely bonkers seen this live. Also saw Pulp at Primavera in Barcelona a few years back and they were still great!

Not a landslide then - only 40 between the Top 3. And 17 voters put Born Slippy in their Top 7 but it got almost nothing else. :o That’s probably my favourite dance record ever - just the most incredible stream of consciousness narrative delivered with an incredibly effective almost monotone vocal line.

 

But Common People’s still a fab winner. I didn’t fully get it when I was 11 but my dad thought it was the best record he’d heard for many years.

Have to say it again, the quality in this rate was exceptional. For a while in the late 90s, Born Slippy would have been my 30 pointer - I became obsessed with it (even before I'd seen Trainspotting) as it sounded exciting and like the future and, like Julian said, a stream of consciousness, with life charging past like those relentless drums. Common People, however, has only improved in age for me, because the story is so accessibly delivered, but it's so true - Jarvis absolutely nails it in the lyrics - so I'm delighted it has come out on top!

Was never in doubt for me, I think it won the last 90s number 2 rate as well, and I can't argue with it. Wonderful lyrics, commentary, instrumentation, it's all there. A deserved britpop classic.

 

Born Slippy ofc. also absolutely incredible, one of the most trippy and intense dance tracks and I still can't quite believe it made it as high as number 2!

Two very important, thriving genres in the 90s represented by excellent songs. Nice one BuzzJack :clap: I think that is my worst attempt at predictions in anything ever, though. :lol:

Obviously I'm very pleased with that result. Common People just IS the 90s for me, it's rare that a song comes out and you know at the time that it is era defining and an instant classic but Common People was that track. Born Slippy is just excellent and so very different to anything else out there at the time, plus its use in Trainspotting just cemented it as a cultural moment. That's why I put those as my top two, I feel that both of them represent the culture of the 90s really well and transcend being a song to also represent political feelings, film culture and and sum up an entire generation.

Magnificent winner, definitely one of my favourite songs of all time :wub: I thought it was a fairly obvious winner, thought it might be by a bit bigger margin
