Taking 2nd place we have Adele's debut single 'Hometown Glory', and re-released following 'Chasing Pavements' and 'Cold Shoulder', the latter which narrowly missed the top 10 of this rundown. She wrote the song when she was 16, supposedly within ten minutes. Adele would go on to be one of the biggest album sellers ever in the 2010s although even in 2008 "19" was in the year's top 20 best-selling albums.

An unsurprising winner perhaps but also a very much deserved one and my personal favourite of the lot. British rapper of Sri Lankan heritage M.I.A. had her breakthrough and biggest hit in 2008 with 'Paper Planes' taken from her 2nd album 'Kala'. The song was inspired by her issues with obtaining a work visa for the US. It was also produced by Diplo and sampled 'Straight To Hell' by The Clash. She had three further top 40 hits including features on songs by Madonna and Travis Scott.

What an addictive song Paper Planes is, best winner of one of these since RHCP - Californication in 2000 for me ^_^

Paper Planes is so overrated, never liked it that much.

 

Wrong Glasvegas song in the top 10 too, Geraldine is such a bore compared to the epic Daddys Gone!

 

Thought Panic would have done better here. Its not too dissimilar a song to High Hopes which of course won its year. Yay for Elbow top 5 at least.

Agree with Dobbo on 'Paper Planes', never saw what was so special with that song and I'm not too mega on Paramore myself. Only like a few by them but pretty obvious it'd storm it here to be high up. Also agreed with Glasvegas being the wrong one in the top 10. I don't recall that one at all but 'Daddy's Home' is great and I initially commented earlier thinking it was that one at 9th aw.

 

 

PCD not far off top 10 is good to see. Alphabeat, Little Jackie deserve to be higher outside imo and before I get strangled 'Gotta Be Somebody' shouldn't have been last imo but it's to be expected heh.

Missed voting on this one but would have given Paper Planes 10 points behing Flobots 12 so a very predictable but great winner.
