I think it'll be Netherlands and Qatar. I sense some shady goings on to get the host nation as far as possible, like with South Korea in 2002 and Russia in 2018. A few dodgy decisions in Qatar's favour but in fairness they are still a decent team and Champions of Asia no less. Also best equipped for the conditions of course! Senegal to be the flops...

Senegal forward Sadio Mane has been ruled out of the World Cup as he requires surgery on a knee injury he sustained playing for Bayern Munich.

On Tuesday, Senegal's football federation said Mane, 30, would miss their "first games" at the tournament.

But a further MRI scan was completed on Thursday that showed surgical intervention is needed.

Mane was forced off during Bayern's Bundesliga win over Werder Bremen on 8 November.

A shame for Senegal if they have lost their star player - reminds me a bit of Egypt in 2018 with Salah.

My prediction:

1. Netherlands (clean sweep of victories)

2. Senegal

3. Ecuador

4. Qatar

Ecuador will be missing a lot of key players. Unfortunately for them, a team of their size and pedigree can't really afford to go to a tournament with anything less than full strength

Netherlands

Absolutely no one would have believed you had you said on the night of the 10th of July 2014, after losing a semi final to Argentina, that the Netherlands would not be at a tournament for the next six (technically seven due to covid) years. Louis Van Gaal’s side were fantastic in 2014 but a number of players were approaching the twilight of their careers around that time, but still no one could have foreseen the decline that was to come for the Dutch over the next few years.

Good luck to Senegal - looks like a good team on paper and sounds like coach is doing a great job.

Qatar will probably lose all their games... Interesting if there will be any legacy to speak off.

My feelings before a ball has been kicked is that it will probably end up finishing something like...

1. Netherlands

2. Qatar

3. Ecuador

4. Senegal

I think, even with Mane's loss, Senegal have the 2nd best squad on paper in the group but it depends on their mentality after losing their leader and I feel they might struggle to adapt to it. I think it will be close between Qatar and Ecuador but I think home advantage will give Qatar the slight edge.

The hosts have never lost the opening game but I think that might change today.

Qatar XI: Saad, Pedro, Bassam, Khoukhi, Abdelkarim, Homam, Al-Haydos, Karim, Aziz, Afif, Almoez.

Brighton players Moises Caideo and Pervis Estupinan both start for Ecuador, with the third, Jeremy Sarmiento, on the bench.

Former West Ham forward Enner Valencia skippers the South American side who have lost just one of the last 15 games.

Ecuador XI: Galindez, Preciado, Torres, Hincapie, Estupinan, Plata, Mendez, Caicedo, Ibarra, Valencia, Estrada.

Ecuador are starting to dominate possession. We’re yet to see much of Qatar’s front two, Akram Afif and Almoez Ali.

That one should definitely count this time. 1-0 to Ecuador

Estrada heads over from Estupinan’s cross, though it wouldn’t have counted because Estupinan was just offside when he ran onto Hincapie’s clever pass. Qatar are being completely outplayed at the moment.
