Japan is yet another one of my family sweepstake teams, what kind of slay :cheeseblock: Crazy that they only lost to Costa Rica who finished bottom of the group!

The European teams seem to be struggling the last few days, probably a variety of factors at play but I did sense the time of year and conditions would play a part in this.

Yeah Japan :w00t: :yahoo:

Goodbye Germany. Laughing until 2026

Firstly surely that ball was OUT

Really struggling how Spain lost this, after their smashing opening match, anyhow looking forward to the Morocco match now.

And finally looking at Germany going out second time at the group stage, makes me wonder if the team needs a overhaul refresh, they don't seem to have any strength in them no more.

It is very odd that the pictures that the broadcasters received suggest the ball was out yet it was overturned with no sharing of the reason. I don't want to go on about as much as the studio team on ITV have just been... but I am sympathising with the German fans at the moment as I'd be gutted if it were England that went out that way... well, as near to 'gutted' as I could get with a football match anyway :D

That said, it's great to see a team like Japan qualifying as group winners. Well done to them ^_^

Well done, Japan!

There is no way that second Japanese goal should have counted. Not unless the rules suddenly had an addendum of “do whatever is necessary to send Germany out”

Which would be unnecessary given that Germany is their own worst enemy. This is the only game of the WC I have watched and I will be resuming my boycott of this farce from now (as I said before this started, I would only watch if I was invited to hang out and watch with friends, and I was with some Germans this evening). Germany haven’t been playing particularly well. They don’t take their chances. Everything is too slow and the decision making is simply poor. For me the problem is that they’re trying to bring in new young blood and start to rotate out the older players but with the usual heavy reliance on Bayern. Sane was more of a danger to passing aircraft and Musiala was completely garbage and if he wasn’t a Bayern player he’d be no where near this team. He was selfish, never did anything with the ball until it was too late (oh let me pass now that my teammate is no longer in free space and oh let me shoot now there’s 5 people between me and the keeper instead of the 0 7 seconds ago) he’s young but he’s too young right now. He’s so inconsistent and just isn’t good enough to be a starter.

There is some small shoot of hope in that some new folks got their first call ups and for the EM in 2024 in Germany, Flick should go further to diversify the team. The bundesliga has a wealth of homegrown talent who have never played for Bayern and that should be explored in much more depth

The second half, after Costa Rica equalised was actually much more exciting. But Germany had left itself an uphill battle and when you rely on someone else’s result going exactly so in order to qualify then you’ve missed your chance and the dumping is fairly well earned (when you’re a champion like Germany is).

Honestly, when Costa Rica took the lead at 2-1 I really rooted for them to win to knock out the Spanish too just for the bants

Those 3 minutes where it was briefly looking like Japan and Costa Rica would be the qualifiers from this group were iconic

Japan winning the group of death by beating Spain and Germany but losing to Costa Rica is some top tier underdog play.

Sad for Germany but that's an exciting way to finish.

I wish Costa Rica could have held on. That would have been something special.

I wonder why the cameras that do the semi-automatic offsides can't help out with checking if the ball has crossed the line.

Absolutely, the feelings during that brief period!

Group E ends up being identical to Group C, whereby the top team lost to the bottom team but beat the 2 middle teams who in turn both beat the bottom team. Then the middle teams drew and it went down to GD in the end. That 7-0 thrashing really saved Spain but they've been really poor since, a hark back to teams of the past where they dominate possession and do f*** all with it. They arguably have inadvertently ended up on the easier side of the draw mind so maybe they won't be too disheartened.

Not sure how Flick survives this, what a fall from grace from winning the treble with Bayern a couple of years ago.
