April 14, 20232 yr I think this will sound great live. I'm going to persevere with it because I love the aesthetic she is revisiting with it but I agree on first play that it somehow sounds much flatter than it should.
April 17, 20232 yr The single edit doesn't really do it justice. It's more instant than Pearls for me Vocals are heavenly, Goddie Ware did her thang!
April 17, 20232 yr "Begin Again" is really good, I think it'd make a great opening track (I assume it will be track #1). Can't believe it's less than 2 weeks until the album is released!! *_*
April 18, 20232 yr Banquet have the 2022 RSD of ‘Devotion (The Gold Edition)’ in their sale for £8 - just picked up a copy. https://www.banquetrecords.com/jessie-ware/...sd22%5D/3890844
April 18, 20232 yr I read on Popjustice that the £8 version is the standard 11 track album, and it’s only the £27.99 double album that includes the Gold Edition tracks. A misleading listing from Banquet!
April 22, 20232 yr I've come around to Pearls massively  If you wanna come to the moon (moooooon!) HYPED AF after that interview.
April 28, 20232 yr I’ve definitely got to sit with this album some more as it’s a even poppier and much lighter collection that even WYP was.. I have to say ‘Freak Me Now’ is an absolute stonker of a track and absolutely sounds like a huge hit (even though it won’t be!) Edited April 28, 20232 yr by Davidson
April 28, 20232 yr Lightening seems the stand out for me so far, it's just not what I want from her as a whole this album.
April 28, 20232 yr 'Shake The Bottle' really made me smile! Cheeky, ridiculous and fun. Album itself is a bit of a mixed bag, a couple of them are seriously dull which stands out even more on a 10-track album. Although I've not really been loving 'Pearls' it felt like such a rush playing the album through.
April 28, 20232 yr I'm enjoying the upbeat moments on this the most - Free Yourself might be my favourite thing Jessie's put out, but I wish the album was a bit closer to that in sound. I'm coming back round to Pearls after going off it, and Begin Again is gorgeous <3 Lightning, Freak Me Now and These Lips are all amazing - Shake The Bottle though :cheeseblock:
April 28, 20232 yr Whats Your Pleasure was a great introduction for me and Jessie. I had actually only heard Free Yourself previously. Pearls tho, yikes. Everything else here is fantastic! A very cohesive album. I was worried about how short this was (and how generous the last album was) but after two plays I’m very impressed!
April 28, 20232 yr Pitchfork has given the album a great score of 8.3! The Guardian gave it 5/5. The reviews have been consistently positive across the board - score of 89 on Metacritic which places the album 5th of 2023, so far. I can't wait to give it a listen!
April 28, 20232 yr I enjoyed it on first listen! It‘s essentially Jessie really letting loose and just having fun. It doesn’t come near What’s Your Pleasure for me which was a lot more slicker and smooth whereas this is very much in your face. It’s such a contrast though from pre-WYP!
April 28, 20232 yr I don't think I'm totally sold on it, I'm certainly not as instantly in love as I was with What's Your Pleasure... I really liked Freak Me Now and it reminded me of a Scissor Sisters track, Begin Again has grown on me a lot since I first heard it and the main other keepers for me were Free Yourself and Lightning.
April 28, 20232 yr 'Freak Me Now' needs to be the direction for the next record — give me that French house pop album, Jessie. The album is great. It seems a little insubstantial but I'm enjoying it.
