I suspect it'll be my 29 pointer! :cry: But I didn't expect her to get top 10 last time tbh and this placing would be about where I would have predicted then and I think is where she would get now, so it's kind of in-line!

LOVE Ariana. Gone off her the last couple of releases (tu,n is the last era I loved - didn't like many of the stand alone releases or 'positions' era at all :() But those first few eras... SO good! Great vocalist too.

 

I have a really, REALLY unpopular opinion on Mariah, oops. I... just don't find her *that* great a vocalist! That's wrong to say, I know (especially as so many of my favourite artists have cited her as one of their favourites etc..). Like, I don't dislike her voice at all and she could still outsing so many people under the table, but I just don't rank her as highly as others do (they rank top 3 usually and I'm like... hmmm... more top 10/15) even on her older stuff, she has big songs, but she's really quite monotonous and I get bored listening to *too* much of her stuff in one go due to this (and it's why I haven't finished her albums discography listenthrough that I started back in lockdown )! I'm sorry to the Mariah stans and I'm sure it's gonna prove unpopular here, but it doesn't do much more for me :( I do like her songs on a song by song basis though and I do appreciate that others find her to be the great vocalist that they say she is.

Shame to see Mariah fall quite a bit there, I guess she's rebranded herself now as the Queen of Christmas, and we don't see much of her the rest of the year, but she's such a legend.

 

Ariana can be hit or miss for me, so not quite near my top 30. Her highs are very high (No Tears Left To Cry, One Last Time, Rain On Me) but I can definitely leave a lot of her recent stuff. She must be due a new album soon - just looked up her last non-Christmas top 40 hit and it was over two years ago, and also one I have no recollection of at all (Test Drive).

Ariana for a time (I’d say between spring 2018 - late 2020) was pretty much always pushing something. Releasing two albums in 6 months and then a string of features, stand alone singles and soundtracks then another album in 2020 she was definitely feeding us. I think now we’ve experienced a real break from her it’ll be interesting to see what direction she goes in for AG7 but I definitely think her break will mean more anticipation.

 

I’d have loved to have seen Ariana climb but I know that since the Sweetener era she’s been a little divisive on here with her releases being quite hit/miss (definitely more hit for me though).

 

I’m gonna predict that Katy and Dua will the next ones we lose.

My 3 Ariana faves are probably the ones Rich mentioned, and I also enjoy Santa Tell Me in the early run-up to Christmas.

Not a bad drop for Ariana considering it's coming up to 3 years since her last album. One Love Manchester was the moment that I realised how strong a vocalist she is - that whole event made want to root for her. Dangerous Woman and thank u, next are two of my favourite albums of the 2010s, there are so many great album tracks across those <3 I think the sweetener album is patchy but the singles run that produced - 'no tears left to cry', 'God is a woman' and 'breathin' is her very best, a triumph both musically and visually. I saw her live in 2019 and she's just as good, if not better, than on record vocally. Looking forward to the upcoming Wicked movies and hopefully a 7th album won't be toooo far away!

 

How neat that Ariana and Mariah finished next to each other when the former is so inspired by the latter. My Mariah knowledge wasn't that great so I started listening through her albums a couple of years ago. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of her first album, although later came her back-to-back holy trinity for me: Daydream, Butterfly and Rainbow :wub:

Yeah, I guess Ari's slight drop was expected considering she hasn't done anything for a while. If anything though I'm more surprised she was even as low as #14 last time.

I'd forgotten I'd given Mariah points, I thought she was just outside my top 30!

I don't agree with every word at all... mainly because I don't think the view is a particularly unpopular one, not in the UK anyway

Obviously everyone's entitled to their own opinion but I'm surprised anyone's saying Mariah's not that great a vocalist - love her or hate her, she is definitely worthy of being recognised as one of the greatest, especially in her prime!!

Depends what you look for in a vocalist I guess. She can/could definitely scale the octaves but I've always found her voice to lack emotion and warmth.

 

I think top 15 is still a very decent result for mariah.

Definitely agree with that, she was very hit and miss after 'Music Box'.

The 3 artists from 'Don't Call Me Angel' all finishing very close together!

 

Mariah is much like Whitney for me in that I think it's undeniable how technically talented she is but I don't necessarily want to actually listen to her voice a lot of the time. Also a lot of her music is pretty boring, but she has some gems.

I thought the singles from Mariah’s Daydream album were pretty much her best, Fantasy and Always Be My Baby are my two Mariah songs of choice
