March 9, 20232 yr Christ... it sounds really, really boring on first few listens? It doesn't help that she's an absolute charisma vacuum (sorry Rich, not seeing this star power you're talking about!). A song chock-full of cliches... you smashed up an expensive car, ooh I'm out with the girls, da da da da da... okay? Surely the whole point is we shouldn't be sending something that sounds like a diluted version of what's in our charts which is already flat as a pancake as is? This just reminds me of James Newman all over again. I think it just speaks to us once again not really having a musical identity. I can't imagine what she's gonna do on stage to bring this to life, throw her nails about a bit like she always does? She's had the edges shaved off a bit since I saw her in 2020, as she was massively charismatic at the gig in Heaven I saw her at, hilarious on stage, a lot of personality, sharp lyrics, good melodies, a lot of star potential. Admittedly this, lyrically, is hardly genius work - so many artists once they sign to major labels do seem to be diluted a bit to try and push for hits, I guess this what happened here, but I do enjoy it myself nevertheless. And that's more than can be said for Storm and Bigger Than Us. Embers was fine as a studio track but not live.
March 9, 20232 yr I'm looking in on a big Eurovision Discord and reddit and I'm seeing mixed to positive reactions with a few very positive. I feel like there is actually an audience for this out there and if you compare it to host entries in recent times then it actually looks pretty great. The Eurovision discord I'm in also has mixed to positive reviews too. I can only hope for good when I finally listen to the song.
March 9, 20232 yr I struggle to be positive about this at all, listening more I do like the pre chorus but the chorus is really trite at best. I’d say this on the same level as Embers but I actually prefer that as a song :/ Both are CapitalFM fodder, performed by singers who seem to have 0 stage presence. Maybe Mae will surprise me but this is a very UK music entry to a fault, I can’t see it appealing to the masses despite sounding like a UK hit.
March 9, 20232 yr It doesn't help that she's an absolute charisma vacuum (sorry Rich, not seeing this star power you're talking about!) I don't think she's a charisma vacuum, but (I'm blaming Rina for the comparison, because she lead us all on...) Rina felt like a STAR. Mae feels more 'high school talent show' - endearing, fun, can bring the party, but missing that edge (similar to Mabel, now I think about it). A song chock-full of cliches... you smashed up an expensive car Not *quite* an expensive car (in the vid), she's smashing up a Ford Escort. 🙈 (though I've just googled, and it's not exactly cheap these days...)

Oh I'm going by the lyrics being Benz... that makes the car choice even more confusing!

March 9, 20232 yr #4 on iTunes and comments seem decent enough on YouTube etc., After Electrovelvet, Michael Rice and SuRie I’ll take this all day long, I think people got too whipped up in the Rina rumour (not helped by her constantly trolling too) that anyone other than her was going to be a disappointment to them.
March 9, 20232 yr I'm liking it, the first song in a while we have entered that straight away I was like ok this is catchy..... I didn't buy into all the usual big star names or listen to snippets before hand , and I have just listened to the songs that are selected so far and its better than most of them
March 9, 20232 yr This reminds me of the kind of level of 'bop' Ireland sent last year that didn't qualify... I am sure will have some fans but will not do well overall.
March 9, 20232 yr This reminds me of the kind of level of 'bop' Ireland sent last year that didn't qualify... I am sure will have some fans but will not do well overall. Whilst "That's Rich" is a great song, the production felt very cheap. I do think this song is very well produced/catchy, the only thing I'm not sure on is if it will pop on stage
March 9, 20232 yr This isn’t terrible, it’s basic though. I’ve listened to live clips of her on YouTube and I’m not impressed with her live vocal which is concerning. I think 15-20 placing is on the cards for this.
March 9, 20232 yr Thats Rich was flying middle seat backpack only on Ryanair and this is business class on Singapore production budget wise
March 9, 20232 yr I don't think this will be anywhere near the bottom five, bookmark me. It's not like it's a landmark year full of strong female pop 'bops' - Poland I don't think is as good, Norway is not the same sort of song. It will have its audience I reckon.
March 9, 20232 yr Nope. This song isn't good enough in it's current form and she will need to change it up and SELL IT without it coming across as cringe or (respectfully) it is a candidate for bottom 3. The studio version is bang average and for the topic she is singing about there is no sass to it whatsoever. Not much jury or public vote appeal. Edited March 9, 20232 yr by M3G4Nx
March 9, 20232 yr Some early thoughts after listening to the whole track at last. Unoriginal, bland, provincial, lyrically lame, dirge. I hate it, it's like a very poor Dua Lipa, but I guess it may do well in Eastern Europe. It proves to me that Sam Ryder was a total fluke. We're co-hosting it, and we've put forward a stinker! Final thought... Mae Muller did indeed write a song, a crap one! 100% THIS!! It's dire :(

Israel and likely Armenia say hello.

March 9, 20232 yr This sounds like one of those songs that sounds like it will only really be a (big) hit in the UK/Ireland and pretty much make little to no impact anywhere else. I just think our brand of dance-pop just doesn't fly too well anywhere else? Do Becky Hill/Anne-Marie (features) have much of a profile outside of the UK/Ireland? If they do then something like this may translate well for points but idk... I can't see it being the hit we need it to be (a "hit" not necessarily a win - top 10 would have been great) to keep our momentum up before we're back to being "see, always bottom 5". This to me sounds no different to (as I said before) an Anne-Marie feature or Becky Hill song. Neither of which are my favourite artists, but I can bop to when in the right mood.
March 9, 20232 yr It's nothing groundbreaking but on first listen I'm enjoying it a lot, definitely the type of song that I'm likely to revisit a lot and it's obviously very catchy. It's not the type of song that's going to make the UK any sort of embarrassment (lyrics don't matter much to me and they're basic at worst I think). I just want the staging and performance to be as top notch as last year!
March 9, 20232 yr See for me all I can think is, if you look at female pop songs, the likes of El Diablo, Monsters and Adrenalina to name a few just from recent years, they were low top 20 or not even top 20, and whilst I know each field is totally different, I can’t see how a basic TikTok-ified pop song is going to fare better than those with a performer who doesn’t seem to have much of a spark. I mean I guess it is a bit of a weak field so far so I don’t think it will be absolute dead last, but I can’t see it much higher than that! I guess at least we’re sending a song that would just be a hit here, that sort of represents our music industry, for better or worse.
