[ 3 ] Brent Faiyaz - JACKIE BROWN (#96)

BuzzJack's favourite top 100 hit for 2023 week 12 and auto-qualifying for the March monthly round is Nothing But Thieves - Welcome To The DCC.

In one of the more surprising results to date, the win this time with the approval of just under half of voters goes to British indie band Nothing But Thieves, whose pivot into 80s synthpop (the lead from forthcoming 4th album 'Dead Club City', the titular DCC from the single) just about landed them only their second ever top 100 single and first since 2017, while they still await a first top 75. This makes them by far the lead artist with the least decorated singles chart history to win one of these polls so far, although they have gone 3 for 3 on top 10 albums.

We still await the first act to win two of these polls - RAYE comes very close with her post-album single finishing in 2nd place 2 votes behind Nothing But Thieves, while Fred again.. teaming up with Skrillex but swapping Flowdan for Four Tet doesn't prove as winning a combo as 'Rumble' with their latest hit coming 5th although still reaching double figure votes too. Between those two we have the surprise return to the top 40 for Hozier in 3rd place, while Taylor Swift perhaps surprisingly comes in as low as 4th with the highest new entry of the week, an archival release originally cut from 'Lover' and released now to mark the start of her new Eras tour. Jimin may have got the highest charting solo BTS track to date (before breaking his own record this week) but it impressed fewer than half of the number who voted for j-hope's top 40 hit the other week, with 'Set Me Free Pt.2' coming in joint last with 3 votes, my last minute votes elevating Brent Faiyaz from being alone in last place. Luke Combs manages to avoid going 3 for 3 on last places though still gets about the same number of votes as his last two. Both Jimin and Luke have another chance in this week's poll.

Weekly winners to date:

01 // 12/01/23 // Sub Focus and Dimension - Ready To Fly

02 // 19/01/23 // Skrillex, Fred again.. and Flowdan - Rumble

Another batch of 14 songs for you all to dig into this week. There's a few songs this week that have multiple versions - notably for the two K-Pop entries, both have both Korean and English versions, I've linked to the English ones only (in FIFTY FIFTY's case it's tagged as the 'Twin version' and I believe does not have vocals from all of the members of the group) as they appear to be the more popular ones at least in the Anglosphere unsurprisingly, but if you care to seek out the Korean versions and prefer them then feel free to vote based on those instead. Then with A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie there was a recent remix that dropped featuring Mariah The Scientist but as far as I know its success is coming nearly entirely from the original (with a bit of help from a sped up version) so I've only linked the original of that too.

Even with sticking to just the one version of those songs, the runtime is slightly longer than last week at a new lengthiest to date of 50 minutes and 16 seconds, with Daisy Jones & The Six providing the longest entry of the week and Lana Del Rey also providing another 5+ minute track. Lana (x2) is joined in this week's poll by fellow former poll winners Linkin Park and Fall Out Boy. Can any of them get a second win?

Vote for as many or as few songs as you want and would be ideal if you can make sure you've heard all the songs before voting if possible!

I've got this poll up on a Saturday again just about :cheer: although I'll be busy next weekend so this poll will be open until at least Sunday if not Monday. The March monthly round will be up alongside the next weekly poll.

The Nothing But Thieves song would probably have had my vote for last week if I'd heard it before today - quite like it on first listen
Linkin Park and FIFTY FIFTY!

Ed Sheeran - Eyes Closed (#1) - not bad but one of his more limp releases

Jimin - Like Crazy (#8) - not sure why this one charted higher doesn't even have a hook, boring song

Paris Paloma - labour (#29) - what a bore, we don't need more taylor swift album reject soundalikes

FLO - Fly Girl (feat. Missy Elliott) (#38) - jarring sample, boring verses and missy e trying to sound like nicki minaj? no thanks

Lana Del Rey - Paris, Texas (feat. SYML) (#48) - very calming and relaxing, always liked her higher register numbers

Lana Del Rey - Candy Necklace (feat. Jon Batiste) (#68) - also soothing but a bit more on the dull side, doesn't warrant its length either

Luke Combs - Fast Car (#70) - his voice actually suits this song quite well, but no... still not voting for it

Juice WRLD - The Light (#73) - catchy hook to this one but can we let the poor guy rest now?

Linkin Park - Fighting Myself (#81) - very strong track, much prefer this one to lost

Daisy Jones & The Six - Look At Us Now (Honeycomb) (#82) - decent attempt at a fleetwood mac soundalike but it's not for me

A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie - Secrets (#88) - this sounds like it's constantly building to something but nothing comes, disappointed

Fall Out Boy - Hold Me Like A Grudge (#91) - standard FOB but that's no bad thing

FIFTY FIFTY - Cupid (#96) - BLAND BLAND

Borai and Denham Audio - Make Me (#99) - swear i've heard this before in a contest on here? good sample if not a lot of substance

Pretty meh again. Votes for Lana x1, Juice, LP, FOB & Borai.

1. FIFTY FIFTY - Cupid

2. Juice WRLD - The Light

3. Daisy Jones & The Six - Look At Us Now (Honeycomb)

4. Paris Paloma - labour

5. Fall Out Boy - Hold Me Like A Grudge

6. A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie - Secrets

7. FLO - Fly Girl (feat. Missy Elliott)

8. Luke Combs - Fast Car

9. Linkin Park - Fighting Myself

10. Lana Del Rey - Candy Necklace (feat. Jon Batiste)

11. Jimin - Like Crazy

12. Borai and Denham Audio - Make Me

13. Ed Sheeran - Eyes Closed

14. Lana Del Rey - Paris, Texas (feat. SYML)

Cupid is a massive bop. The Korean version >>>. The English version cuts out the rap verse. I'm here for as many K-Pop girl groups to chart as possible with NewJeans also already making their debut this year.

'The Light' is exact the type of song that Kid Laroi thinks he's making. It's a lot better than anything they released for 'Fighting Demons'.

Daisy Jones & The Six is something that's been on my 'to-watch' list for a couple of weeks because I'm a fan of Riley Keough. It sounds really nice and it's pretty cool to see a third-generation of Presleys reach the chart.

The Fall Out Boy song sounds just as good as their classics. It's impressive how consistent they've managed to be.

I'm sure it's going to end up winning but I really dislike 'Paris, Texas' from Lana. Some of the vocals really grate on me.

I like it better than 'Cardboard Box' but I haven't been able to get properly into anything from FLO yet. I prefer the track from Chlöe's new album when it comes to recent Missy Elliott collabs.

I've was going to just vote for the top 3 but I decided to be generous and give Paris Paloma and FOB a vote too!

Lana currently tied with herself at the top :cheeseblock:

Neither of those songs are among my absolute favourites from the album (justice for 'The Grants' not charting), but I voted 'Candy Necklace' from those two, and also Fall Out Boy. The four Top 40 entries are decent-to-mid but not quite voteworthy for me.

1. Fall Out Boy - Hold Me Like A Grudge

2. Linkin Park - Fighting Myself

3. Luke Combs - Fast Car

4. Daisy Jones & The Six - Look At Us Now (Honeycomb)

5. Ed Sheeran - Eyes Closed

6. FIFTY FIFTY - Cupid

7. Paris Paloma - labour

8. Lana Del Rey - Candy Necklace (feat. Jon Batiste)

9. Juice WRLD - The Light

10. Lana Del Rey - Paris, Texas (feat. SYML)

11. A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie - Secrets

12. Jimin - Like Crazy

13. Borai and Denham Audio - Make Me

14. FLO - Fly Girl (feat. Missy Elliott)

Voted for my top 4! Candy Necklace is far from a highlight from Lana's new album but the better cuts unfortunately didn't chart, still easily the best song here. Cupid is really cute and Labour is a nice different sound in the top 40. FLO still haven't beaten Cardboard Box for me but Fly Girl is decent and I'm glad their career is still moving upwards.

1. Lana Del Rey - Candy Necklace (feat. Jon Batiste)

2. FIFTY FIFTY - Cupid

3. Paris Paloma - labour

4. FLO - Fly Girl (feat. Missy Elliott)

10. A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie - Secrets

11. Daisy Jones & The Six - Look At Us Now (Honeycomb)

12. Luke Combs - Fast Car

13. Jimin - Like Crazy

This week is the first time I've voted for as many as three songs!

New poll finally going up shortly - sorry I've gone a little AWOL on the forum in the last week, will try and get back into the swing of things ASAP x

My ranking and thoughts for this poll:

1 'Paris, Texas' - instantly magical and calming song, really adore the piano on this  parts of this sound more like a film score or something than a proper song (a bit AURORA) so I'm surprised this ended up being her highest charting album track but taste 9.5/10

2 'Candy Necklace' - pretty similar to my thoughts on the above really, I still haven't listened to her album yet oops but still yet to hear a song from it that I haven't really loved so excited for the rest of it 9/10

3 'Fly Girl' - think this is my fave that I've heard from FLO to date, I feel like I'm not at all the target audience for this kind of song but am I still going to have that chorus stuck in my head every time I hear this? Yes x (always good to see Missy Elliott still kicking around too) 8.5/10

4 'labour' - second time hearing this one as I listened to the chart show for once, I thought it sounded ok then but more into it on second listen, nothing amazing but kind of giving me Florence album track vibes albeit with less distinctive vocals. Still can see it growing on me more 7.5/10

5 'Like Crazy' - last week's Jimin song had parts I really liked and other parts I didn't like much at all. This one is pretty much the same level of quite good all the way through so averages out to the same score I gave to the last song, another 7/10. Don't see this being memorable for anything other than the lolz at it breaking the record for biggest fall from #1 on the Hot 100, it's just a decent synthpop song, nothing more nothing less

6 'Look At Us Now (Honeycomb)' - the amazing guitar solo alone almost elevates this to being worthy of a vote but it's a shame it's attached to a song that's otherwise just a pleasant but inessential - and certainly at least a minute too long - folk rock tune 7/10

7 'Secrets' - I thought I'd not heard this before but I saw I'd already liked it on YouTube and indeed it came back to me as soon as I heard it - I think this had the potential to be a really good song as it's another really sticky hook as he occasionally stumbles onto but the lack of a beat drop just leaves it sounding kind of unfinished, like an intro that never reaches the main part of the song, shame 6.5/10

8 'Eyes Closed' - I've already heard this a bunch of times on the radio and it's already grown on me a little bit but at the end of the day this is never going to be a Sheeran fave, it's just a moderately decent ballad, done many times before and this is never going to feel like much of a standout. Hopefully better to come on the album 6.5/10

9 'Make Me' - I think if the sample was swapped out for something else I'd like this more, the instrumental is pretty cool sounding and at least not a carbon copy of Strike's but I'm still never going to hear this and not just want to be listening to Strike instead, their version is a proper 11/10 classic, this one is not. 6/10

10 'Fighting Myself' - mm this one could definitely have remained cut, I do quite like the hook but some pretty weak verses on this one, nowhere near as good as 'Lost' 5.5/10

11 'Hold Me Like A Grudge' - the song is pure mid that I have nothing to say about (I fear 'Love From The Other Side' was a one off actual good comeback single from them) but the music video did make me smile a few times at least 5/10

12 'The Light' - not really a fan of the instrumental on this one at all and the vocals are just typical Juice, decent but nothing special - maybe they are starting to run dry of posthumous material worth releasing 5/10

13 'Fast Car' - to all the people who complained about 'Creepin'' apparently being too similar to the original version I direct your attention to this. Lol at him not even changing the 'checkout girl' line. I'd probably prefer to hear this over a few of the mid songs I ranked just above it, 'Fast Car' is after all a great song, I just don't know why you'd ever actively want to hear a version that is essentially identical but sung by a worse singer completely unnecessary/10

14 'Cupid' - I listened to both versions of this one, the Korean one is slightly better as it has a little more going on with the rap part but all in all this just sounds like a K-Pop version of 'Sunroof' i.e. bland, cool to see more K-Pop groups continuing to break through but NewJeans they are not 3/10 (maybe 3.5/10 for the Korean version)

Voted for the top 4.
