May 30, 20232 yr It doesn't seem that 'The Collected Recordings' has ever been digitised, i.e. no availability on iTunes/Spotify etc. Yet regardless, the Official Charts Company has some of Tina's streaming go towards that album on a seemingly regular basis. A bit odd! What the heck?! I thought an album has to be available digitally in order to collect streams. It just goes to show how ridiculous the current rules are.
May 30, 20232 yr Why hasn't it been updated? It's gone past 10pm. It’s not as if they haven’t been compiled either - they were sent out this afternoon
May 30, 20232 yr It doesn't seem that 'The Collected Recordings' has ever been digitised, i.e. no availability on iTunes/Spotify etc. Yet regardless, the Official Charts Company has some of Tina's streaming go towards that album on a seemingly regular basis. A bit odd! It's racking up all these sales and is as high as midweek #12 today, even though nobody could access that particular album even if they wanted to - although I appreciate that the songs included on it are being streamed from other releases. Still, it feels extra fake that this particular album is so high up the chart. The first 2 discs of that release focuses on her songs with Ike from the 60s/70s, and solo rarities mostly from the 70s/80s. They're songs that mostly aren't included on her compilation albums such as 'The Best' and 'The Platinum Collection'. Maybe OCC decided that the streams of her "Ike and Tina Turner" era hits could go towards 'The Collected Recordings'? Although the third disc does include many of her best known hits, so maybe those contribute after all? A shame if there's an odd split between 'The Collecting Recordings' and 'The Platinum Collection', perhaps preventing the latter from being higher than #8. Fascinating! Am I right in thinking that a record company can nominate a greatest hits? If so, I assume they have nominated the ‘Platinum Collection’. Alternatively, it is the compilation that includes most of Tina‘s Greatest Hits - ‘Simply The Best’ and ‘All The Best’ only include 18 tracks and ‘The Collected Recordings’ miss out most of the more recent hits - therefore it is the album that would chart highest when given all the streams. However, it is far from being a complete collection. And therefore ‘The Collected Recordings’ would only include streams from tracks not on the Platinum Collection. One that stands out for me is ‘Don’t Turn Around’. I don’t think ‘Platinum Collection’ loses out because of the presence of ‘The Collected Recordings’ and I would imagine it includes most, if not, all of Tina’s 12 most streamed songs
May 30, 20232 yr I thought it was the GH selling the most on physicals that was receiving all the streams?
May 30, 20232 yr I thought it was the GH selling the most on physicals that was receiving all the streams? This is correct, though the label can choose to nominate a different GH (which is why Michael Jackson's charting GH changed from Number Ones to The Essential)
May 30, 20232 yr This is correct, though the label can choose to nominate a different GH (which is why Michael Jackson's charting GH changed from Number Ones to The Essential) Surely it’s physical copies and downloads combined (total sales) rather than just physical. I know the chart rules can be very vague, but in this context they use the word ‘sales’. But as you say, the label can nominate and I feel that in many cases they do. So I imagine those Ike and Tina tracks only occur on this 1 compilation and it maybe sold 1 copy physically if it’s not on iTunes 🤷🏻♂️
May 30, 20232 yr Good to see Sparks riding high (particularly as I’ve already written about them for Friday. Just been to see them tonight and they were just as brilliant as ever.
May 30, 20232 yr Just looked up the midweek chart from the week after Meat Loaf passed and it was actually significantly more of a mess than this: https://www.officialcharts.com/charts/album...20220124/7502u/ There were 3 different compilations, plus an album double pack, that appeared in the top 20 in this update. In the end only one compilation ('Hits Out Of Hell') actually appeared in the final chart. Weirdly there was also another studio album at #20 in that update that also didn't appear in the final chart, I'm not sure if that was also a glitch or it legitimately dropped off that hard over the week. 'Bat Out Of Hell II - Back Into Hell' also appears to have shown up twice in the midweek update there at #4 and #76, and then there was yet another compilation at #88 (that may have been there on pure sales alone? in any case it also dropped off by the final chart leaving him only the two 'Bat Out Of Hell' albums and 'Hits Out Of Hell'). I think their database just doesn't know what to do with sudden surges in streaming for artists who have multiple compilations registered, but they seem to adjust in time for the final chart which I assume they will here as well. But then they still write about it in the article about the midweek chart as if they don't know it's an error that's going to be fixed. (edit: although I suppose it is possible that the second compilation is just getting the streams from songs which are on it and not on 'The Platinum Collection' - I wouldn't have thought they'd be charting that close together if that was the case though? in any case I'd probably wait until the final chart before trying to diagnose what they're doing with these compilation streams)
May 30, 20232 yr Surely it’s physical copies and downloads combined (total sales) rather than just physical. I know the chart rules can be very vague, but in this context they use the word ‘sales’. Yes, you're right - excuse my tiredness for missing that detail!
May 30, 20232 yr ugh... looks like someone forgot today wasn't a bank holiday :P hope they upload it asap though i reckon we might have to wait till the music week update tomorrow?
May 31, 20232 yr Yes, you're right - excuse my tiredness for missing that detail! You’re an icon, Joseph, you’re allowed to make oversights. 😁
May 31, 20232 yr I just looked it up in the OCC rules pdf and while the whole section is super-specific and talks about "physical" and "digital" sales, then in the last sentence about streams, it says streams go to the GH with higher "sales" but does not specify and yes it also says labels can nominate in advance if they prefer
