Thanks to the 39 people who participated in last week's 2 weeks ago's poll :jump:

Official results from week 19:

[ 18 ] Ed Sheeran - Curtains (#16)

[ 17 ] Bring Me The Horizon - LosT (#29)

[ 15 ] Harry Styles - Satellite (#79)

[ 14 ] The Krown Jewelz - Scrap The Monarchy (#9)

[ 10 ] Tom Grennan - How Does It Feel (#95)

[ 8 ] Luude and Bru-C - TMO (Turn Me On) (feat. Kevin Lyttle) (#88)

[ 4 ] Tunde - Back 2 Back (feat. Potter Payper) (#51)

[ 4 ] Victony, Don Toliver, Rema and Tempoe - Soweto (#67)

[ 3 ] Tion Wayne - Healing (#35)

[ 3 ] Lil Mabu - MATHEMATICAL DISRESPECT (#63)

[ 3 ] Toosii - Favorite Song (#87)

BuzzJack's favourite top 100 hit for 2023 week 19 and auto-qualifying for the May monthly round is Ed Sheeran - Curtains.

The site's resident punching bag, little known British folk singer Ed Sheeran manages to pull off a narrow victory here with one of the better received songs from his 6th (or maybe 5th depending on how much you buy into the lore) studio album '-', the grunge-flavoured album track 'Curtains', making its debut on a week without much more obvious BuzzJack bait as competition. It pulls in 18 votes which is the joint second lowest for a winner in these polls to date, and a bit short of half of the voters. Bring Me The Horizon, recent Sheeran collaborators as they are, land in 2nd place just one vote behind. A further two votes back in third is the latest post-album hit from Harry Styles, I'm actually a little disappointed as I thought and hoped that'd win here as it's easily one of his best songs for me but the people have spoken, and they've spoken that it only gets one vote more than fourth placed The Krown Jewelz aka The Kunts with their anti monarchy comedy punk track. What do they do, what do they do, what do they actually do? They get 4 more votes than the last track to break double figures, the latest bit of radio filler from Tom Grennan.

5 songs fall short of the 5 vote mark and they're all the ones you'd expect (i.e. most of the rap and/or R&B adjacent ones, although Luude/Bru-C/Kevin Lyttle did a bit better though well short of the performance of 'Oh My'). Last place is a three way tie between Tion Wayne, Lil Mabu and Toosii who got 3 votes each - until my last minute late votes, Tion was in last place on his own, he really didn't deserve that as this is easily one of his better solo offerings to date for me!

With this being another two-in-one thread including the bumper Eurovision week, it is a bit of an overloaded Spotify playlist this week whoops - not least as both weeks have a song that I've seen fit to include 2 versions of ('Life Goes On' and 'AMERICA HAS A PROBLEM' both have non-trivial chart contributions from both their original solo album versions and their new remixes featuring Luke Combs and Kendrick Lamar respectively, as ever feel free to judge based on either version). The TVORCHI song also has 2 versions but I'm not sure if there's that big of a difference between them, in any case I've only included the one tagged as 'Eurovision Version' as that's the one that charted on Spotify and I guess the one people heard on the TV. Still overall not quite as long a running time as I expected for 35 tracks though - a total of 1 hour 48 minutes, being 1 hour and 7 minutes for week 20 and 41 minutes and 5 seconds for week 21. I guess Eurovision songs being limited to 3 minutes helps, and that Billie Eilish Drake cover being released only as a 1 minute 'edit' version for whatever reason. Only 4 songs top the 4 minute mark.

Like the last time I did 2 polls in one, I included a couple of extra options in each poll due to BuzzJack not allowing you to only vote in one poll. If you are only interested in voting in one of the two polls (single issue 'Padam Padam' voters?), click 'only participating in the other poll' in the one you don't care about and I won't count that vote to the total number of voters. The other extra option is the equivalent of a null vote in a normal single poll thread, if you want to be counted to the number of voters but don't actually want to vote for any of the songs.

There are a few obvious no-hopers in the week 20 poll, even without accounting for the inevitable Eurovision songs sucking up all the attention. Surely this time Clavish will be getting company in the 0 votes club. Even if it may just be the latest entry featuring himself. Week 21 seems a lot more balanced.

Vote for as many or as few songs as you want and would be ideal if you can make sure you've heard all the songs before voting if possible!

The least I can do with this many songs in the playlist is give a full week for voting so I will leave this open until Monday evening :jump: and there's always at least a moderate chance it ends up staying open longer anyway due to my poor time management but I will do my best to stick to that x

And here are the results from the April monthly round... (with thanks to the 25 people that voted in that, one more than the previous month yay)

Unfortunately it is the end of the road for these:

11 86 David Guetta, Anne-Marie and Coi Leray - Baby Don't Hurt Me

10 106 Sigala, Mae Muller and Caity Baser - Feels This Good (feat. Stefflon Don) (no 12s)

9 106 Jack Black - Peaches (2 12s)

8 109 Kim Petras and Nicki Minaj - Alone

7 126 The Weeknd - Double Fantasy (feat. Future) (1 10)

6 126 Tyler, The Creator - DOGTOOTH (6 10s)

5 153 Tyler, The Creator - See You Again (feat. Kali Uchis)

Still in with a chance of making the final for the year is...

4 154 Jonas Brothers - Waffle House

Which means our next 3 guaranteed spots in the yearly round go to Florence + The Machine, Post Malone and Taylor Swift :cheer: I must attempt to remain professional and neutral in my commentary and hide my seething at these results as it's by far the most competitive month to date but ended up falling just a tad short of aligning with my taste... <_< There was a clear top 5 from this lot, but that included a couple of rather polarising songs. Florence + The Machine benefited from being the least divisive and ended up winning the month with a solid 13 point lead over 2nd place, though with a mere 170 points which is way down from all the previous monthly winners which all cracked 200 (though of course not quite an apples to apples comparison due to there being 11 songs here and varying numbers of voters for each month). Then just four points separated 2nd from 5th, with the other two direct qualifiers to the yearly round ending up tied! Taylor nominally wins that tie for what it's worth as she got 6 12s compared to Post Malone's 3. Jonas Brothers' hopes remain alive as they come in 4th, 3 points behind Taylor and Posty. Then just 1 further point back, it's the end of the line for Tyler, The Creator and Kali Uchis, falling just barely short despite picking up 7 12s (including my own - boo hiss!), more than any other song. Florence got 3 12s for what it's worth, while Jonas Brothers only got 1.

Whatever your thoughts on those controversial songs in the top 5, one thing we seem to have collectively agreed on is the dance songs on offer this month weren't very good, with David Guetta and Sigala finishing as the bottom 2. Quite the fall from grace for Guetta who actually won his weekly poll but is a comfortable last place in the monthly one. Jonas Brothers punched a fair bit above their weight considering they only scraped into the monthly round tying with Jack Black for 10th place based on weekly results, while The Weeknd underperforms here as he fell well short of advancing despite getting the same number of votes in the weekly polls as Florence, Taylor and Posty. All interesting moves x

'Karma' progressing does raise the question of if I should treat it in the yearly round as purely the solo version or if the Ice Spice remix deserves equal weight. Let me punt that issue down the road for now x

3 157 Post Malone - Chemical (3 12s)

2 157 Taylor Swift - Karma (6 12s)

1 170 Florence + The Machine - Mermaids

(I knew there were a lot of songs in this poll but even so I wasn't prepared for how intimidatingly huge the poll appears :drama:)

~

Didn't want to bump the last weekly poll thread so these were my last minute rankings from week 19:

1 'Satellite' 9.5/10

2 'LosT' 8.5/10

3 'Healing' 8/10

4 'Curtains' 8/10

5 'Back 2 Back' 7.5/10

6 'Scrap The Monarchy' not as memorable as their other hits but still kinda ikonik/10

7 'Soweto' 6/10 (6.5/10 for the original)

8 'How Does It Feel' 5.5/10

9 'TMO (Turn Me On)' 4/10

10 'Favorite Song' 3/10

11 'MATHEMATICAL DISRESPECT' almost as embarrassing as HStikkytokky somehow/10

Voted for the top 5. 'Satellite' was already a big fave for me (particularly love the big crescendo instrumental moment on the final chorus, reminds me a bit of Bombay Bicycle Club's 'Luna' which is very high praise from me) but I was loving it more than ever combined with the music video, who knew a Mars rover could be so adorable x Bring Me The Horizon serving a banger which I can see growing on me further, loving the little hyperpop elements in the production. A couple of pretty good UK rap offerings here (one of Tion's best, and Potter Payper sounding good over a slightly more lively instrumental, ngl I could barely tell the difference between him and Tunde though lol) and 2 for 3 on voting for the Ed songs from this era so far, wasn't expecting the grungier vibe on this one but I approve. 'Soweto' isn't immediately grabbing me as much as most afrobeats hits, I particularly didn't love Don Toliver's parts hence giving a slightly higher score for the original version but either way it's just ok. Tom Grennan's is just more barely passable radio filler, but definitely better than 'Here' (I had to double check that was him, there are too many interchangeable artists of this variety). I've been on board with Luude's previous hits but this one doesn't really work at all, the Bru-C part is fairly naff and the rest is just an unnecessary remix of a good song into a style that doesn't suit it as well as the original. But still will take pointless dnb remixes over pointless Love Island house remixes. I keep going back and forth on if I actually really hate the Toosii song or just think it's a mediocre but inoffensive Rod Wave clone with a more annoying vocal. I settled on the latter but there's still something that just feels a bit fundamentally not good about it, kind of gives a similar skeezy vibe to that one YK Osiris song (here's hoping Toosii is not as much of a scumbag as a person as YK turned out to be x). I'm not humouring the existence of that Lil Mabu thing.

I don't normally vote in these polls as I'm quite happy in my 6Music/random YouTube genre corners, but I thought I'd give some love to the Eurovision songs. Voted Kaarija (can we get the right result here ;-)), Alessandra, Voyager and La Zarra. Mama šč would have definitely got a vote too </3

While I'm here, I'll also throw votes to Kylie, Blur and Lana in the second week.

21. Ed Sheeran - Life Goes On

22. Käärijä - Cha Cha Ch

I know I'm not going to enjoy the results for this week  I've voted for my Top 6.

'Unicorn' is the first Eurovision song I've really loved since Fuego! 'Solo', 'Queen of Kings' & 'Who The Hell Is Edgar?' were great entries from this year too.

'All My Life' is saved by a killer Cole verse but I support the idea from Durk, even if his verse is pretty weak. 'Different League' is my pick of the charting songs for Nines from this album.

Gustaph was a fun performance but not quite enough for me to listen to outside of the show and the two Potter Payper tracks are both similarly alright.

The Joel Corry and James Arthur tracks are not amazing but decent for the usual standard of the artists.

Everything from Becky Hill to Billie Eilish is bland and forgettable for me.

'Life Goes On' is really Ed at his most tedious; Nothing about the track appeals to me in the slightest. And I just don't get everyone's love for 'Cha Cha Cha'. It's borderline unlistenable for me

Week 21

1. Jorja Smith - Little Things

2. Beyoncé - HEATED

3. Beyoncé - AMERICA HAS A PROBLEM (feat. Kendrick Lamar)

4. Lana Del Rey - Say Yes To Heaven

5. Blur - The Narcissist

6. Post Malone - Mourning

7. Lewis Capaldi - Haven't You Ever Been In Love Before?

8. Gorgon City - Voodoo

9. Kodak Black and NLE Choppa - Angel Pt. 1 (feat. Jimin, JVKE and Muni Long)

10. Anne-Marie - UNHEALTHY (feat. Shania Twain)

11. Kylie Minogue - Padam Padam

I'm just voting for Jorja this week. I'm liking it better than 'Try Me'.

'Heated' is the better of the 2 Beyoncé tracks for me. I would have preferred that got the single treatment and Kendrick remix.

'Say Yes To Heaven' sounds nicer than the charting tracks from Lana's recent album but it's still pretty non-descript. Blur's track is ok bar some odd vocal moments and 'Mourning' is far too MOR.

'Haven't You Ever Been In Love Before?' and 'Voodoo' definitely sound like Lewis Capaldi and Gorgon City tracks!

The Fast & Furious track would actually be decent if it weren't for Jimin's horrible vocals. Muni Long sounds great and kills her parts though. Hopefully Pt. 2 can get rid of him.

Anne-Marie doing country-dance is better than her pop efforts I guess.

It's cool to see her get a top 40 debut but I don't understand how 'Padam Padam' is the song that has got Kylie another big hit. I think it sounds awful and it the worst song I've ever heard from her. 'Dancing' was much better.

Now I regret falling asleep last night. I could've at least saved See You Again which is pretty decent. -_-

Voting for the bolded tracks - Eurovision absolutely stomping :cheeseblock: I really wanted to like Sam Ryder's song but couldn't get into it, only Space Man has done anything for me.

1. Käärijä - Cha Cha Cha

2. Loreen - Tattoo

3. Alessandra - Queen Of Kings

4. TEYA and SALENA - Who The Hell Is Edgar?

5. Blanka - Solo

6. La Zarra - Évidemment

7. Voyager - Promise

8. Noa Kirel - Unicorn

9. TVORCHI - Heart Of Steel

10. Gustaph - Because Of You

11. Andrew Lambrou - Break A Broken Heart

12. Becky Hill and Lewis Thompson - Side Effects

13. Billie Eilish - hotline

14. Kali - Area Codes

15. Lil Durk - All My Life (feat. J. Cole)

16. Joel Corry and Caity Baser - Dance About It

17. Nines - Different League (feat. Nafe Smallz and Clavish)

18. Ed Sheeran - Life Goes On (solo / feat. Luke Combs)

19. Potter Payper - Real Back In Style

20. Potter Payper - White Ash

21. Sam Ryder - Mountain

22. James Arthur - A Year Ago

1. Kylie Minogue - Padam Padam

Could easily have voted for another 3 or 4 songs in both weeks, but want to give an emphasis to my top few:

Week 20: Loreen, Alessandra, Noa Kirel, TEYA and SALENA

Week 21: Lana Del Rey, Lewis Capaldi, Blur

(btw the Joel and Caity song is called 'Dance Around It')

Oops, not sure how I messed that up. Let me harass Joseph to correct that x

(I actually do usually double check I haven't made any typos since you can't correct spellings in your own polls without admin powers for some reason but I guess there were just so many songs this week that one slipped through the net anyway )
