June 2, 20232 yr Author Nice to have another big clearout and a slew of new adds rather than the stale update we were expecting this week :) you know it's a relatively fresh playlist when the longest runner has only been on for 8 weeks. Great to see 'Say Yes To Heaven' on the playlist, my favourite Lana single in forever! Happy that it's being pushed as a proper single. So they added 'Haven't You Ever Been In Love Before?' in the last playlist but seem to have dropped it this week, which is odd :unsure: So technically it was only on the playlist for three days which must be a record! Maybe it's a mistake though, I guess we'll see if they play it this week. Edited June 2, 20232 yr by Mangø
June 2, 20232 yr Great to see Hannah Laing and Nothing But Thieves added and Overmono move up. Shame to see Sub Focus off already, but I guess they did effectively get an extra week on the A-list during the Big Weekend playlist.
June 2, 20232 yr Of course they didn’t add Madonna and The Weeknd I think they actually might though, seeing as she's not a lead artist - same with the Sam one. Similar to how they wouldn't touch Ellie Goulding with a bargepole these days, but they're all over 'Miracle' because it's Calvin.

Imagine if we had Madonna, Kylie and Shania all on the Radio 1 playlist at the same time. (I say imagine because that's all we are going to be able to do)
June 2, 20232 yr True but I wouldn’t be surprised if they purposely skipped it and added another Madge-less The Weeknd song I doubt they have that much against Madonna considering Shania is on the playlist and the likes of Paul McCartney was a few years back with Kanye and Rihanna!

Yeah, I was wondering whether that was added as a replacement for "Songs from the album". Imagine if we had Madonna, Kylie and Shania all on the Radio 1 playlist at the same time. (I say imagine because that's all we are going to be able to do) In Meatloaf's immortal words, two out of three ain't bad (I've got a feeling we will see Madonna on there in the next few weeks either with The Weeknd or Sam Smith - or both, imagine that!)
June 2, 20232 yr Thought the 'Gloria' in the subtitle was going to be Sam Smith for a second, would have been a curious decision :lol: forgot about The Snuts' song of the same name. Great to see 'AMERICA HAS A PROBLEM' added even if they're still also pushing 'VIRGO'S GROOVE' for whatever reason. The other Lewis song being dropped already is weird though, maybe not a single after all? But odd for them to playlist an album track for one week unless indeed it was a stand-in for 'tracks from the album'. Good to see Niall A-Listed (shame this song hasn't done much chartwise, it's way better than 'Heaven' imo!) and Overmono B-Listed *.* Yet to hear most of the additions so can't really comment on them, not a fan of the Maisie song as per though. Guess they are sticking with the solo version of 'Karma'?
June 2, 20232 yr If Madonna isn’t added it’s surely reinforces the age old issue with BBC RADIO 1 - they seem to have a real problem with female singers over 50…. And ageism is the exact same as homophobia, racism etc…

I don't think so somehow! We've discussed this issue to death on here but the reason they don't play older artists isn't because of their age per se, it's more to do with the fact that they don't see them as appealing to their younger demographic, that's it.
June 2, 20232 yr It's not a Madonna single. If it is being pushed as a proper single I'm sure it will be added (I say 'if' because it's dropping very soon after 'Double Fantasy' so not sure if it is a full single or just a promo).

You may not think so, but I do! And just because ‘we’ve discussed this issue to death’, doesn’t mean it hadn’t gone away. Prejudice in any form is hateful and wrong. And, the argument that the listener’s are young and would only want to hear young artists is beyond preposterous, narrow-minded and wrong. Great music is great music. And… if a song by an artist sounds like other songs playlisted, then to not playlist it, is ageism = hate.
