BuzzJack's favourite top 100 hit for 2023 week 20 and auto-qualifying for the May monthly round is Loreen - Tattoo.

BuzzJack's favourite top 100 hit for 2023 week 21 and auto-qualifying for the May monthly round is Kylie Minogue - Padam Padam.

Probably wouldn't take a genius to predict the winner of both of these polls judging by the level of stan activity around both - Swedish 2nd time Eurovision winner (and 2nd time earning a UK top 3 hit from it) Loreen clocks up another victory as she got votes from just over 3 in 5 voters to win the week 20 poll. She did however have relatively close competition... from the runner up of Eurovision, Finland's Käärijä putting up a good fight and landing just 4 votes behind. At least Loreen can claim this victory was without any juries though :basil: insert your own discourse here. The week 21 poll was much more of a walkover with an even more obvious winner, in case you haven't been reading the chart forum at all recently here's a fun fact for you: there is quite a bit of support and excitement around the chart performance of Kylie Minogue's 'Padam Padam'. That was already the case when it debuted at #26 but of course even moreso with it continuing to climb and nearly making the top 10 last week, a big return to chart form after her not getting any top 40 hits from the last album and only barely one from the one before that. The Princess of Pop is the first Australian to win one of these polls and did so with the support of just over 7 in 10 voters (46/65) which iirc is a new record in these polls! (I should probably collate this information in one place some time). In a week where she may otherwise have notched up her third poll win of the year, Lana Del Rey settles for a distant 2nd place this time, 17 votes behind (yet still actually getting more votes than her winners, 'A&W' having topped its poll with 26 votes and 'Paris, Texas' only 19).

With the combined power of Eurovision and Kylie attracting a record number of participants to the poll this week, there are quite a lot of songs clearing double figures in both polls. In week 20 it is mostly the rest of the Eurovision songs (minus Ukraine's TVORCHI), Norway's Alessandra coming in 3rd (but with 32 votes which would usually be a comfortably winning score), Austria's TEYA and SALENA 4th, Poland's Bejba Blanka 5th (the latter two also getting to 20+ votes), Australia's Voyager joint 6th, France's La Zarra 8th, Israel's Noa Kirel joint 9th (alongside the new Sam Ryder song which was also released in time for a Eurovision final performance but was of course not an entry), Belgium's Gustaph 11th and Cyprus' Andrew Lambrou joint 12th. The best performing non Eurovision song was the latest Becky Hill mediocrity (alongside chart debutant Lewis Thompson) which lands joint 6th with 18 votes, with the only other non Eurovision adjacent song to clear double figures being Joel Corry and Caity Baser in joint 12th place with 11 votes. Almost as inevitable as the all Eurovision top 3 is the all UK rap bottom 3, with my own last minute as ever votes preventing Potter Payper's 'White Ash' becoming the second member of the 0 votes club, while his other song did a tad better with 3 votes and between the two is Nines, Nafe Smallz and serial vote non-getter Clavish with 2 votes this time. American rap performed a bit better with Lil Durk even coming quite close to double figures although Kali also fell short of the 5 vote mark, as did the rather baffling case of the 1 minute snippet of Billie Eilish (barely audibly) singing a little bit of Drake's 'Hotline Bling', I'd normally be shocked at a Billie Eilish song only getting 3 votes but in this case that almost seems shockingly high. Luke Combs sets a personal record of 7 votes with his latest half-inclusion.

The top 5 for week 21 all also got at least 20 votes, with Beyoncé (and Kendrick) coming in a fairly distant 3rd, 7 votes behind the top 2 and one vote ahead of a tie between Anne-Marie/Shania Twain and Blur. One may note Lana Del Rey has the only song in the top 5 that doesn't involve an artist whose chart career started in the 20th century. The more contemporary Jorja Smith lands in 6th place and Beyoncé's other belated entry of the week is in 7th, both also crossing double figures. Everything got to at least 5 votes in this poll, although only barely for the latest overstuffed and multicultural Fast & Furious soundtrack song.

Sorry it is yet another 2 in 1 poll again this week - I partially blame the BuzzJack downtime as I was planning to put up a quick week 22 poll the night that happened ddd - but let's really try and make this the last time  it's a less intimidating list this time anyways with 7 songs for week 22 and 14 for week 23 (so those two weeks combined still have 1 fewer song than week 20 alone!), totalling 1 hour and 11 minutes (22 minutes and 40 seconds for week 22, 49 minutes and 6 seconds for week 23). No multiple versions to worry about this time either. As I commented on during the week, both Dave/Central Cee and Metro Boomin manage 3 debuts apiece for week 23, after the previous 22 weeks did not have any artists making triple appearances. Something tells me neither DaveCee or Metro will be winning this poll with any of their songs though.

As with previous 2 in 1 polls there are a couple of extra options due to BuzzJack not allowing you to only vote in one of two polls. If you're only interested in voting in one poll tick 'only participating in the other poll' for the one you're not interested in. The other extra option is if you do want to count as participating in the poll but don't actually want to vote for any of the songs (so the equivalent of a null vote in that poll).

Vote for as many or as few songs as you want and would be ideal if you can make sure you've heard all the songs before voting if possible!

I'll intend to keep this open until Sunday (18th) evening and get up another poll then, this time for only the one chart week if I can actually stick to good timekeeping for once. Will also post the (belated) May monthly round this evening :jump:

3. Taylor Swift - Hits Different

4. Byron Messia - Talibans

5. Lil Durk - Pelle Coat

6. Hannah Laing and RoRo - Good Love

7. Bou - Closer (feat. Slay)

Voted for my top 3. 'It's Crazy' is a brilliant comeback from Hus. Well worth the weight with some interesting 'horrorcore' vibes. And 'Dance The Night' is another great example of the sound that Dua has made her own. Loving both of them at the moment. 'Hits Different' is a solid Taylor entry if nowhere near her best.

'Talibans' is ok but nothing special and the others aren't for me. We didn't need another song sampling 'Children'. I don't even like the original!

12. Metro Boomin, Swae Lee and NAV - Calling (feat. A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie)

13. D.O.D - So Much In Love

14. Stray Kids - S-Class

Voting for my top 5 this time. The 3 Dave/Central Cee tracks are all great and could be in any order. They were the correct 3 out of the 4 tracks to chart. 'Sittin' On Top Of The World' sounded like it might be favourite solo Burna Boy track on first listen. The sample fits like a glove. 'Annihilate' is my pick of the Spider-Man tracks. Wayne's verse is fire.

Roisee sounds pretty cool on 'Am I Dreaming'. She sounds like the sort of singer who would provide the hook for a recent Eminem track. 'Popular' would be pretty good if it wasn't for Playboi Carti's screeching.

Nothing much to say about the rest, 'S-Class' sounded annoying but the rest are just average.

21 'Break A Broken Heart' 4/10

22 'Solo' 1/10

Voted for the top 8, 5 of my on-the-night Eurovision top 10 being there (Finland 2nd, Australia 3rd, Norway 6th, Austria 7th, Ukraine 9th). I actually initially ranked Sweden only 19th(!) but the song has really clicked with me a lot more after the contest surprisingly! Not a lot of change in my opinions on the rest of the Eurovision songs, although I did originally rank France slightly ahead of Israel and Belgium. Cyprus has shrunk on me even more after already finding it mediocre, and Poland has just been garbage every time I've heard it and by far the worst thing in Eurovision this year, I feel like even Mabel would turn her nose up at that. Finland's has only grown on me more after the contest as well, making it my second 10/10 of the year after 'A&W', such a moment seeing a song this out there being so widely praised and successful. I think 'Mountain' sounded slightly better on stage than the studio version but then again it was a different version of the song, still it's easily my 2nd favourite thing I've heard from Sam so far behind the obvious. I need to do a full relisten of the contest and finally hear the DNQs, planning to do that tomorrow.

Eurovision aside, I was surprisingly really impressed by the Potter Payper tracks, found 'White Ash' in particular to be really engaging lyrically (and helps that he actually put a chorus in it) and both songs have great instrumentals especially towards the end. Not found much of his previous stuff very interesting but these are a definite improvement. Shame he's gone and got himself imprisoned again, sigh. The verses of the Durk/Cole song are good but I really don't care at all for the hook, that alone drags it out of my votes. James Arthur's song was pretty decent, maybe could be a grower, not that it's sticking around enough to have a chance to be one. Kali could definitely be a grower too as a mindless bop but it's a bit too one note and feels like it drags a bit even with its short run time. I like the hook on 'Different League' (mildly jarring lyrics aside) but a middling performance from Nines himself and Clavish's verse is maybe his worst one on a charting song so far. 'Dance Around It' is very dime a dozen but barely poking into the decent range which is a first for Caity Baser and still pretty rare for Joel Corry too. 'hotline' exists, for some reason. 'Side Effects' didn't completely make me roll my eyes which makes it on the more interesting end of Becky's releases but still mid. I guess I can see why 'Life Goes On' has been one of the more popular songs from this Ed album but it's even more of a miss than 'Eyes Closed' for me (and added shouting from Luke Combs shockingly does not make it any better), not bad per se but pretty boring unforch.

Week 21:

1 'AMERICA HAS A PROBLEM' 10/10 (9.5/10 for the original)

2 'The Narcissist' 9.5/10

3 'Little Things' 9/10

4 'HEATED' 8.5/10

5 'Mourning' 8/10

6 'Say Yes To Heaven' 8/10

7 'Voodoo' 8/10

8 'UNHEALTHY' 7/10

9 'Padam Padam' 6.5/10

10 'Haven't You Ever Been In Love Before?' 6.5/10

11 'Angel Pt. 1' 4.5/10

Very high quality across the board in this week, voted for the top 7! 'AMERICA HAS A PROBLEM' is an absolute banger and was already one of my top 2 from 'RENAISSANCE' but an excellent Kendrick verse pushes it over the edge to ***flawless territory (so a 3rd 10/10!), love how he totally fit the energy here, it's great to get a proper carefree banger from him again as much as I loved 'Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers'. Very much impressed by this Blur comeback too, sounds a bit more like Gorillaz than Blur actually but I'm not going to complain about that, immaculate vibe and dreaminess on this track (and I would probably take it over anything from the latest Gorillaz album anyway). 'Little Things' is definitely more instant and hit-sounding from Jorja than 'Try Me' was (digging the UK funky vibes) so glad that's being reflected in the charts but I've really liked both songs, she's a bit hit or miss for me most of the time but this era is off to a very promising start! 'HEATED' was more of a mid level fave from 'RENAISSANCE' for me at first but it has grown on me quite a bit, particularly like how the chanted vocals just sound more and more unhinged as the song progresses. The Posty and Lana songs are both very solid if not highlights of their careers, not a lot to say about them really. 'Voodoo' charting feels a little random especially as it's disappeared again after just one week but it is definitely one of Gorgon City's better and more distinct sounding recent releases. 'UNHEALTHY' is a huuuuge improvement on Anne-Marie's last couple of singles (thank god), not amazing but a cute mildly yeehaw bop, I do have a slight soft spot for Shania in general. 'Padam Padam' has grown on me a little bit, definitely has a bit more to it than other songs from this subgenre even if I still think it's overall fairly unremarkable. Lewis Capaldi delivered another decent Lewis Capaldi song (with another annoyingly effective emotion bait video). 'Angel Pt. 1' is definitely a case of too many cooks in the iamspamspamami (lol), there was no need to have 3 different people singing the hook, it's a pretty mediocre hook anyway but Muni Long sells it a lot better than the other two. Kodak's verse is actually surprisingly good though which bumps it up a point or two. Can take or leave NLE's.

Week 22:

J Hus - Its Crazy | 8/10

Lil Durk - Pelle Coat | 7/10

Dua Lipa - Dance The Night | 7/10

Taylor Swift - Hits Different | 6.5/10

Hannah Laing & RoRo - Good Love 5/10

Byron Messia - Talibans 4/10

Bou - Closer (feat. Slay) 2/10

A mid week for me here, with the exception of my 3 chosen ones.... The J Hus track has been stuck in my head since its release, it is a solid comeback cut from him. It kind of reminds me of Stormzy's 'Mel Made Me Do It' last year. Durk's album is a letdown from the singles but 'Pelle Coat' still remains a banger. 'Dance The Night' feels like a much less superior, cheesier 'Future Nostalgia' B-side, at least its the best track from the Barbie Soundtrack so far (Until Ice Spice X Nicki Minaj X Aqua does drill comes). 'Hits Different' is ok, I can see why it was left off of 'Midnights' original tracklisting. Good love is well-produced but really needs some extra flavours to spice up the track. Talibans is quite boring eventually, and please can people stop using 'Children' if they're not going to use it properly and make a solid tune.

Week 22: voted 'Dance The Night' and 'Good Love' - both passed the post although I like the latter much more and it's the less likely to win.

Week 23: voted 'Am I Dreaming' only - hadn't heard it before, but it stood out enough to prevent my first null vote in one of these.

A lot of stuff just not to my taste here. Haven’t seen the new Spider Man film which would have probably helped with the Metro tracks. That Bou song also just feels like a cash in attempt based on the interest in React and the original sample.

Went with Taylor, Due and Hannah Laing week 22. Burns Boy, Weeknd & Stray Kids week 2. Tempted with Foo Fighters and Dominic, but realistically won’t listen to either again outside of the charts.

week 22:

good/votes: Hannah Laing, Dua Lipa, J Hus

decent: Taylor Swift

meh: Bou, Lil Durk, Byron Messia

week 23:

good/votes: Dave (Sprinter/Trojan Horse), DOD

decent: The Weeknd, Dave (UK Rap), Metro (Annihilate), Stray Kids, Dominic Fike

meh: Metro (Dreaming/Calling), Burna Boy, Foo Fighters, Gunna, Slim

Week 22

J Hus - It's Crazy (#15) - standard J Hus fodder, nothing standout here

Taylor Swift - Hits Different (#18) - uninteresting. Astrid S song >>>

Dua Lipa - Dance The Night (#20) - decent for a Future Nostalgia reject

Hannah Laing and RoRo - Good Love (#63) - can someone find me the BANGER KLAXON?

Byron Messia - Talibans (#67) - it's not quite the Taliban Song but it's definitely a vibe

Lil Durk - Pelle Coat (#75) - better than All My Life but not enough to warrant a vote

Bou - Closer (feat. Slay) (#76) - no one asked for yet another Children sample

Voted Dua, Hannah & Byron.

Week 23

Dave and Central Cee - Sprinter (#1) - unprecedented success for a single without a hook but ppl appreciate strong bars

Dave and Central Cee - Trojan Horse (#14) - cool cover art and more sick bars

Dave and Central Cee - UK Rap (#17) - weaker version of the above 2 but this time with cringey lyrics

The Weeknd, Playboi Carti and Madonna - Popular (#21) - literal definition of mid

Metro Boomin, A$AP Rocky and Roisee - Am I Dreaming (#51) - production reminds me of old school kanye, the singer is super boring however

Burna Boy - Sittin' On Top Of The World (#52) - snoozefest, next

Metro Boomin, Swae Lee and NAV - Calling (feat. A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie) (#56) - snoozefest, next

Metro Boomin, Swae Lee, Lil Wayne and Offset - Annihilate (#59) - this is more like it, nice array of verses

Gunna - bread & butter (#63) - back to the drawing board for you sergio!

Dominic Fike - Mona Lisa (#90) - that's enough spamming now peter parker

D.O.D - So Much In Love (#94) - tight production and soaring vocal, may this RISE into the top 40 post-haste!

Foo Fighters - Under You (#98) - it's music designed for long drives with the roof down but I like it

Slim - Double R's (#99) - oh this guy has good flow, not quite as much as the shady version but still, there's potential. but who is richard mills?

Stray Kids - S-Class (#100) - [*resists obvious BTS comparisons*] this is batshit so for sure I'm giving it a vote

Voted DaveCee x2, Metro et al x1, DOD, Foos, Slim & Strays.

I'm not crazy about anything this week :( voted for 'Dance The Night' and 'Trojan Horse' as my favourites from their respective polls

Will vote for the top 4, some rather intense violent lyrics in both of my top 2 there but 'It's Crazy' is a banger (definitely a good one for my nonexistent 'ignorant bangers to turn your brain off to' playlist) and it's good to have a dancehall track becoming a hit, 'Talibans' is nothing super original for the genre or anything but still a bit of an earworm (and it's reminded me a bit of Skillibeng's 'Crocodile Teeth' which was a mega banger, this one isn't quite as standout as that but still liked it). 'Good Love' likewise nothing particularly original but good execution of the sound it's going for. Dua just about makes my votes, it's more of the same from her and not one of her best but I wouldn't have expected that for a soundtrack single tbf, still a fun summery bop. I'm normally not quite as into Lil Durk's more introspective songs (he'd have a lot of songs on the aforementioned ignorant bangers playlist) but 'Pelle Coat' is a bit more interesting than some of his others. I can see why 'Hits Different' was left off the original 'Midnights', it's ok but not near the best on the album. I also have already ruined it for myself as I will never be able to unhear the chorus being similar to 'Starry Eyed Surprise' by Paul Oakenfold/Shifty Shellshock :kink: (that is a banger but funny to think of it being compared to Taylor). Robert Miles really needs to be allowed to rest, I don't think the sample is quite as out of place on 'Closer' as it was on 'REACT' (at least it's a kind of melancholy song) but still no @ it being turned into a pretty mediocre dnb song.

Week 22:

Voting for Dua and Taylor. Nothing *horrendous* here but as everyone's said we didn't really need another Children rehash (lol at the featured artist being called Slay when the song is anything but x)

Just voting for the top 4 here as well so a pretty middling week compared to the other one. All 3 of the Dave/Central Cee tracks are pretty easily among Cench's better songs but not really near Dave's best, 'UK Rap' is the closest though, thought that had both the best instrumental of the 3 and a stronger hook than 'Sprinter', also really liked Dave's flow on his verse and the ikonik Nelly Furtado namedrop. The Misha B namedrop on 'Trojan Horse' was also similarly ikonik and generally enjoy the two bouncing off each other on that song, though I do think it could have done with being a little shorter and/or having a hook, and it had a few slightly eyebrow raising lyrics here and there although another cool instrumental with the string sample. 'Sprinter' is the least interesting of the 3 in pretty much all regards but still fun enough to just about be worthy of a vote, Dave's last verse is the most entertaining part and probably saves it from falling short. The Metro Boomin trio is much more of a mixed bag, I think Swae Lee puts in a good performance on both of his tracks but there's a vast difference in the quality of both the production and rap verses on 'Annihilate' (amazing beat, goofy but solid Wayne verse, pretty good Offset verse) vs. 'Calling' (surprisingly boring beat which Metro is usually reliable with, NAV being NAV, whatever verse from A Boogie). 'Am I Dreaming' lands in the middle as it's carried by Metro's strong production (more strings!) but disappointed with Rocky's performance on it and the Roisee verse is some soulless Skylar Grey esque mediocrity, this one almost sounds like it could be a Wiz Khalifa Fast & Furious song albeit with better production.

As for the rest, 'So Much In Love' is probably the 2nd best song I've heard from D.O.D after 'Still Sleepless' so I guess the public have chosen the right songs to make the chart, a solid banger but a little too dime a dozen and missing a little something to make it vote worthy (might grow on me though). The Foo Fighters song is a Foo Fighters song. I feel like I should be liking 'Popular' more but Madonna is pretty underutilised on it and the hook is pretty corny, I do quite like the mid-00s throwback production and the Carti feature but the whole package isn't quite clicking. I think 'Mona Lisa' could also be a grower but it's not a good sign that I already barely remember what it sounded like. The Gunna song is a Gunna song (tbf it's a bit better than the average from him as I think he found a decent instrumental and flow for this one, and I guess it's a little bit more interesting lyrically than the usual with it being his response to the whole snitching thing, but it has the same problem as a lot of his discography in that it just doesn't switch up at all throughout the song so ends up getting boring before it finishes). I've never heard of Slim before and maybe I'd care more about this comeback if I did - can see it being a hype song for people who were awaiting his return - but as it is it just sounds like a less charismatic Potter Payper song, pretty good instrumental though. The Stray Kids song was hard to rate because I kind of admire how bizarre it is, can't accuse it of just being a generic K-Pop boyband song, but I do think they stuffed in a few too many ideas and some of them work much better than others (the chorus is pretty annoying in particular) so it's just a bit of a mess, 5.5/10 may be generous if anything but there was a way this could have turned out much better if they refined it a bit. Burna Boy unfortunately delivering some mid this time.

new poll up shortly, I didn't forget, I was just procrastinating and fell asleep
