ATB to win but would not begrudge Britney either, it's not really a huge favourite for me personally but obviously iconic.

UK Chart Run: 68-X-73-75-72-X-55-47-1-1-2-3-5-6-12-14-21-31-38-42-51-59-75 (21 weeks)

After the longest and closest battle ever seen in these contests (perhaps fittingly as it was the final of the last yearly round of the competition), it is German DJ André Tanneberger better known as ATB who prevails. 9PM, originally released in late 1998 became somewhat of a sleeper hit, climbing charts across Europe and eventually rising all the way to the top of the UK chart (after several brief spells charting on imports alone). It was the first ever trance #1 single and paved the way for the genre to achieve huge commercial success in years to come. ATB had several more top 10 hits afterwards but disappeared completely from the UK chart until 9PM was reworked into a new vocal hit in 2021 along with fellow German producer Topic & Swedish vocalist A7S.

Therefore taking the runner up spot is an artist and song which needs no introduction. One of the most successful artists of the 21st century, American singer Britney Spears made quite the impact on pop culture and then some with her debut single. Also released in late 1998, it took until February the next year to finally make an impact on the UK chart but it made up for that by debuting at #1 with the highest first week sales for a female act. It went on to be the best selling single of the year and in the top 10 of the decade. Since then she has added a further 5 #1s, 18 top 10s and 7 top 40s to her repertoire and was last seen just last year at #3 with a collaboration with another chart legend Elton John.

And with that we are done with the yearly rounds. Thanks very much to all those who participated/voted/commented and shortly I will get underway the grand finale round featuring the 10 yearly winners to see who ultimately wins the decade!

Good result that, ATBs chart run shorter than I thought, it would have def risen to no1 in the old days so again import charting shows how stupid held back releases were at this time.
Great! 9PM (Till I Come) is one of my favourite songs of all-time, albeit not that version posted above. Quite a feat for it to win here over Britney's pop classic.

surprised at how close it was and ATB winning, really thought britney would sweep the final
