I would have expected it to be able to beat TS5's second week, it's definitely an underperformance (but Despicable Me 4 didn't exactly set the world alight in it's first week either tbf)

My bad i must of got it mixed up with the american box office where it just scraped to the top

I still think ‘Oppenheimer’ needed ‘Barbie’ more than the other way around. I really think ‘Barbie’ was hitting a billion with or without ‘Oppenheimer’. Had they not had the ‘Barbenheimer’ hype, I don’t think ‘Oppenheimer’ would’ve got near the billion it did! It strikes me as the sort of movie that would get rave reviews but would “only” have done about $500m-$600m. Instead of what it did get.

Intrigued to see ‘The Odyssey’ numbers. I assume it’s going to break an IMAX record!

I saw it advertised in the cinema and basically watched the whole film from the advert so thought, not gonna bother watching that now. (Tbh I thought the first Minions film was rubbish not a patch on Despicable me)

Everyone else ran scared so the only major release this weekend, ‘The Odyssey’ is a comfortable #1 this week with £12,566,300. This is the third biggest opening of the year (behind the two big animated releases) and climbs up to 2^nd (above ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’) when you strip out previews. It’s £4.3 million banked on Friday is the best Friday gross of 2026 so far. It had a comparably weaker Sunday thanks to the World Cup Final so expect some great holds throughout the week. In terms of Christopher Nolan debuts, this is his second biggest opening behind ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ (£14,362,443, #1, 2012) and the hype going into that one was insane. This has broken all sorts of IMAX records: it’s the biggest ever IMAX opening in the UK (although the figure hasn’t been confirmed yet), the one UK cinema that is capable of showing it in Nolan’s preferred format (the BFI IMAX in London) has sold out 173 consecutive screenings across the next two months and has already made £2.2 million just from that cinema. In terms of 15-certicate films, this is the best result for two years when ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ made £17,276,622 (#1, 2024) on debut.

 

In a largely static weekend, every other film drops one place (even outside the top 10 where ‘Dhamaal 4’ drops to #11 and ‘Backrooms’ drops to #12) aside from ‘Toy Story 5’ holding at #2 and ‘Moana’ dropping to #3. ‘Moana’ has a 47% drop in weekend two which isn’t huge and shows it might stick around but when you open low, it’s not enough to save it fully. It now has £5.55 million banked which is still only just over half of what ‘Lilo & Stitch’ opened with last summer. At this point, I don’t even think it will reach the £20 million opening of the original animated film and that film wasn’t considered an enduring classic until it hit streaming. ‘Toy Story 5’ is having a much more impressive run with only 33% lost this weekend. The good news is that it has passed the final gross of ‘Toy Story 2’ (£44.3 million) but it’s starting to fall further behind the pace of ‘Toy Story 4’ (£47,287,515 at this stage in the run). With most kids in England breaking up for summer holidays now, this is its chance to try and catch up. It’s already beaten the competition to be the kids film of choice in Summer 2026 so I think it still has a lot left in the tank.

 

‘Minions & Monsters’ still hasn’t hit £10 million but another solid hold (-32%) and £1 million+ weekend does show that there’s still some interest in the franchise. I think it’s going to stick around for the summer but the £40 million+ of the rest of the franchise is way too far ahead. Maybe £20+ million for this if it does have good legs? ‘Evil Dead Burn’ also stays in the top 5 despite a 67% (56% without previews) drop. It has £1.7 million but will not be getting close to the previous film in the franchise which took home more than £5 million.

 

Only two more films had grosses in the 6-figures this weekend with ‘The Invite’ losing 45% on weekend three which puts it to £2.5 million while ‘Obsession’ hits 10 weeks in the top 10 after a 31% drop. It has now overtaken last year’s ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ and is the biggest horror hit since Pennywise the Dancing Clown. And ‘It: Chapter Two’ could be beaten by the end of its run.

 

I don’t remember there being a weekend this dismal for the bottom end of the top 10 since I started posting these with three films grossing less than £100k and having similar drops. ‘Supergirl’, ‘Disclosure Day’ and ‘Jackass: Best And Last’ all drop between 65-67% with ‘Jackass’ staying top 10 with a £43k weekend. That’s a terrible weekend for the top 15 usually! In fact, you only needed £16,794 to finish in this week’s chart which is COVID numbers! I just checked a weekend in July 2020 and you needed £10,479 to get top 15 with 8 films outgrossing this week’s #15 and that was during a pandemic!

 

There are three further new entries in the #11-15 section: ‘Dastaar’ (#13), ‘FIFA World Cup Final 2026’ (#14) and ‘Varavu’ (#15).

 

Next week sees the openings of ‘Animal Farm’, ‘Chickenhare And The Secret Of The Groundhog’, ‘Brunello: The Gracious Visionary’, ‘Pinocchio: Unstrung’, ‘The India Story’ and ‘On The Sea’.  We also get a re-release of ‘Chicken Run. Can any of them top the charts?

The Oddessy would still have beaten Evil Dead, a very easy second week for that

The film that opened on just under £1m? Week 2 of The Odyssey will probably be around the £5m mark if it has a typical drop...I'd expect it to hold on even better considering that word of mouth is overwhelmingly positive, and as Lewis says, there will be no World Cup to compete with.

Goodness, next week is a graveyard for new releases. It wouldn't surprise me if none of them make the top 10, even with low box-office figures near the back end - Chicken Run's re-release could scrape it.

Next week is a quiet week but the kids all start breaking up this week, don't they? So I can see some of the children's/family titles start growing a bit more and stabilising on a healthier level (also, no world cup etc.. so should be healthier regardless).

I can see 'The Odyssey' having about a 40% drop (may even be less), which would be insane for a movie of its kind.

I’ll be surprised if Chicken Run scrapes in as Cineworld are only doing it as M4J which is discriminating against childless adults

Tnbf most kids round here finished last friday so wouldnt be suprised if the animations get a boost in the next update

The only thing going against 'The Odyssey' for next week is that (at least in my cinema) 'Spider-Man' has taken up to 9 (!!) out of 12 Screens for the opening day! How many it takes when the schedules go live after and it's available all day long, I don't know.

It's crazy busy for Spider-Man on pre-sales alone! So once they get walk-ins too... WHEW.

Shame they made Pinocco Unstrung limited, its been getting such good reviews

I hope they expand Pinocchio Unstrung further afield from Friday
