Its really not true at all like last month bumped into a friend outside a cinema , what you going to see the NEW minion film , na we are going to watch Toy story

A lot of people will wait a few days or even weeks to watch a film because the one they want to can get overcrowded on release day

The only thing I hate about going to an overcrowded cinema is someone sitting in your seat but if I can, I won’t watch a major film on release day. As for people sitting next to me, I have a problem with it if the screen is near enough empty and they decide to sit next to me otherwise if it’s busy and they have no other choice but to sit next to me and if someone has booked next to me and decide not to sit next to me, I don’t take offence. In fact, I’m happy that they choose not to sit next to me

Spider-Man seems to already be on about £64.8m in the UK! Absolutely INSANE!

In the highest grossing films of 2026 so far, I reckon Michael will fall to number 4 tomorrow with Spider-Man at number 1, The Odyssey at number 2 and Toy Story 5 at number 3

I never would have thought The Oddessy would have made more money than toy story or that it would have joined the billion club this early.

Also Obsession is so close to half a bil

Ice Cream Man might have got higher than number 8 if its sales weren’t watered down by it being last weeks secret screaming and by only having afternoon showings of the film

Obsession has made its 13th week in the top 10! A great result for horror.

Ice Cream Man entered at 8 on both the US and the UK box office interestingly.

It'si another great weekend for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ as it drops 67% (49% without previews) adding another £12 million to climb to £65 million and becoming the top film of the year so far. This means it has already climbed up to be the fourth biggest film in the MCU overall and it will knock ‘Infinity War’ out from bronze position by next week. Next week will give us more of an indication, but its looking good for this to be a £100 million+ grosser. Also climbing up in the YTD chart (to #2) is ‘The Odyssey’ which holds brilliantly again too with -23% being the best hold in the top 10. It is now Nolan’s biggest ever film in the UK and has entered the top 30 films of all-time.

 

The biggest new entry this week is ‘Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie’ (£1,672,975, £1.1 million without previews, #3). This is down on the £2,410,496 that ‘Paw Patrol: The Movie’ (#2) opened with in 2022 and the £3,348,155 that ‘Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie’ (#2) opened with in 2023. Although, sans-previews, all three of these films opened at £1.1 million which makes them feel much more consistent. The first film made £8.5 million in total which remains the franchise peak so far. This is certainly an improvement on last year’s ‘A Paw Patrol Christmas’ (£250,149, #9) which held throughout the holiday season to close with about £1.2 million.

 

Another frequent cinema presence who isn’t afraid of a Christmas release, Andre Rieu has his annual summer release with ‘2026 Summer Concert: Viva Maastricht!’ opening at #6 with £499,762. This continues the trend of the summer releases opening lower and lower after ‘2025 Maastricht Concert: Waltz the Night Away!’ (£566,325, #7) and ‘2024 Maastricht Concert: Power Of Love' (£629,652, #5).

 

The third-and-final new entry this week is Eli Roth’s ‘Ice Cream Man’ which debuts at #8 with £308,198 (£241k without previews). That’s about as much commentary as that film deserves. But I will add that it’s lower than his last film ‘Thanksgiving’ (£486,198, #6, 2023) which made about £1.4 million in total. I would do an ‘opening weekend history’ chart for Roth but I honestly don’t want to waste that much time on him.

 

‘Despite’ climbing above what was the reigning #1 of the year, ‘Toy Story 5’ actually falls a place to #3 in the YTD charts due to Spider-Man and Odyssey’s success. The real loser this week is ‘Michael’ which goes from being the biggest hit of 2026 to 4^th in less than 7 days. Pixar’s latest, however, is out of the weekly top 3 for the first time but has another decent hold (-31%) and climbs above ‘Frozen II’ in the all-time animated list with ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ falling in the next few days as well.  

 

‘Minions & Monsters’ loses 31% in week 6. In terms of it’s weekend drops, it’s stuck around and performed pretty similarly to other films in the franchise, it’s just that it opened so much lower that the gross looks poor. It’s only this weekend that it was outgrossed THE OPENING WEEKEND of ‘Despicable Me 2’ (£14,822,427, #1) in 2013. The other underwhelming kids blockbuster, ‘Moana’ is having an even worse time, dropping 36% and still trailing the £12,021,342 that ‘Moana 2’ opened with in 2024.

 

‘The Invite’ has really stuck around well, losing 27% in weekend 6 as it pushes towards £4 million. ‘Obsession’ finally drops below £100k for the first time but still manages a 13^th weekend in the top 10 with a 34% drop.

 

There are four further new entries in the #11-15 section: ‘Thudakkam’ (#11), ‘DC’ (#12), ‘Yaar Jigree Kasooti Degree’ (#14) and ‘The Summer Book’ (#15). We also see a re-entry for ‘Practical Magic’ at #13.

 

Next week sees the openings of ‘The End Of Oak Street’, ‘Sunny Dancer’, ‘Tony’, ‘Lady’, ‘Nimrods: A Green Day Comedy’, ‘Momo And The Time Thiefs’, ‘All Wishes Come True!’ and ‘Agadha’. We also see a re-release of ‘The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists!’. Can any of them top the charts?

I'm not really sure I foresee any more changes to this top 5 now. 'Minions' could maybe catch Obsession I guess.

It’s been regarded as one of the worst films of all time. Tie that in with the AI controversy as well as the fact that he is an absolutely abhorrent human being… it’s a recipe for disaster.

Amazing results for Spider-Man. It could’ve lost 80%+ and it’d still have been a huge success lmao. But that drop minus the previews is insane for a huge budget Superhero movie.

Oh and I am i trigued to see what End Of Oak Street does but unfortunately I think it’s heading towards being a bomb…! Ughhhh.

Secret screenings/screamings/unlimited showings do tend to water down sales on films. I’ve cancelled bookings for films loads of times because they’ve had that film as a secret screening. I didn’t find Ice Cream Man that bad tbh. I’ve seen worse films than that

But you seeing it at Secret Screening still got it it’s sale that you would have given it on general release though? I don’t understand what you mean?

So ice cream man was also the secret screening in the US too and so that might have even gotten it the sales it did because peeps were not happy that this was the mystery film

I wouldn’t have thought that a film being revealed as a secret screening would contribute to its first week sales. Speaking of secret screenings, tonight’s secret screening was Tony which I’m glad it was as none of my local cinemas are showing it for some reason unless they’ve changed the release date. It was busy with no walkouts

It’s organised by the film distributors. Hence why we don’t get any Disney for example. It’s all there to create hype and boost a box office number (and I’m not against it - so many people view these things and come out of it enjoying something they would never have seen before etc..)

I'm wondering what will eventually replace Spider-Man at the top. There is A LOT that I'm personally looking forward to over the remainder of August, but nothing that feels like it will be that big/released wide enough ('Tony', 'Sunny Dancer', 'I Want Your Sex', 'Spa Weekend', 'One Night Only'). Maybe 'The Dog Stars'? Not one that I'm really anticipating, but Ridley Scott is a big director and it's a big budget release.

If I'd have known that 'Tony' was likely to be a secret screening tonight, I wouldn't have forked out on a preview at Curzon (due to a worry about how I'm going to find time for everything over the next few weeks)

I think it could've been on course to open at #1, but it was an Unlimited screening on Monday night so will now probably miss the top 5 x

Good to see I have now seen the top 3 films of the summer!
