Catching up after a couple of days -

Some great results to follow the Kill v Maim climb, especially the Don't Delete The Kisses climb (though I rate Last Man... (and Silk, and a couple of others) a fair bit higher), the Out Of The Woods climb, and the Doomscroller entry!

Agree it's crazy how a virtually unknown song, relative to everything else in this vote, has gone straight in so high. Occasionally this thread introduces me to brilliant songs I've never heard before, and this is the latest example.

 45 40 289 Dua Lipa - New Rules

10-20-29-98-40-45-

4th, 2017

At 45 is the first of 4 songs by Dua Lipa to reach the top 50, as ‘New Rules’ drops 5 places this year. The song debuted in the top 10 at 10 back in 2018, however hasn’t quite managed to replicate that result, a couple of years ago it bombed down to 98th place, but recovered slightly last year. ‘New Rules’ was Dua’s first Number 1 single and grew into a monster hit, it’s a great pop song with a catchy hook/ chorus. ‘New Rules’ finished 4th in the 2017 heat and in the final round maintains that position by finishing 4th of the 2017 songs remaining. It also finishes in 4th place of the remaining Dua songs with ‘Don’t Start Now’, ‘Levitating’ and ‘Physical still to come.

 44 228 290 Grimes - Flesh Without Blood

258-40-42-68-79-33-228-44-

13th, 2015 | 10th, SF1

A big climb next as ‘Flesh Without Blood’ returns to the top 100 and the final of ROTD. Both Grimes tracks have hit the final in previous years, however failed to do so last year, however both are now back with a vengeance. The song finished 13th in the 2015 group and then in 10th place in its semi-final, it finishes 7th out of the 2015 songs. In the final round the song gained 13 votes overall and had more broad support than ‘Kill V. Maim’ however like that song, its votes was still front-loaded. ‘Flesh Without Blood’ remains Grimes’ highest ranked song on ROTD

 43 17 293 Wolf Alice - The Last Man On Earth

17-43-

7th, 2021 | 9th, SF1

A bit of a drop next as ‘The Last Man On Earth’ drops 26 places this year and out of the top 20. The song debuted in the top 20 last year and this year took 7th place in 2021 heat and then 9th in its Semi-Final to reach the final. The song is lifted from Wolf Alice’s third album ‘Blue Weekend’ and did fail to chart officially, however has become a Buzzjack fave, particularly on ROTD. The song received just 9 votes though and is the last song remaining not to go into double figures. Of those 9 votes, 7 of them were top 10 rankings which helped to keep it in the top 50 for a second year. It remains as the highest placed Wolf Alice song, although the gap between it and ‘Don’t Delete the Kisses’ has closed considerably this year.

 42 38 295 Olivia Rodrigo - Good 4 U

35-42-

3rd, 2021

I was surprised last year that a lot of the Olivia Rodrigo tracks didn’t make a bigger impact given how big she was in 2021, this year I felt the same, particularly given she’s releasing new material. However that didn’t seem to give her songs any form of a bump this year as for a second ROTD running her only song to make it through is ‘Good 4 U’ which drops 7 places. ‘Good 4 U’ was Olivia’s 2nd number 1 in the UK after ‘Driver’s License’ blew up world-wide. The song placed 3rd in the 2021 group, however finishes in 4th place out of the 2021 songs in the final. The song gained 15 votes in total, but just 2 top 10 rankings. I guess more of her songs will get through to the final next year after the success of ‘Vampire’, ‘Bad Idea Right?’ and ‘Get Him Back!’ in the charts this year.

 41 25 296 Sia - Chandelier

52-14-30-43-90-10-19-25-41-

3rd, 2014

Just missing out on the top 40 is ‘Chandelier’ which drops a further 16 places this year. The song has been a little all over the place over the course of the last 9 years, however has always managed to reach the final. The song peaked at 10 in 2020, but since then has taken a series of drops each year, so it’ll be interesting to see if it gets any form of bump in its last appearance next year. ‘Chandelier’ was the first song released from her ‘1000 Forms of Fear’ album and went on to become a massive hit, getting to Number 6 in the charts and spanning a monster chart-run. It’s a fantastic song and led the way to a massive era for Sia. The song finished 3rd in the 2014 group, however in the final finishes in 4th place for that year. It gained a massive 17 votes, however it had just 1 top 10 rankings, with the rest of the vote being made up of mid-place votes and bottom 10 placements.

pleasing to see Pompeii go out whilst still in the top half of the final, plus Runaway and Chandelier keeping top 50 positions

New Rules good to see stable too although I don't think I was able to fit that in my votes this year

A very strong quintet there... sad at the big drop for Last Man On Earth, but think that more reflects its surprisingly high debut position last year rather than #43 being in any way a bad showing!

:ne: 40 ** 297 Ghost - Mary On A Cross

xx-xx-xx-40

14th, 2019 | 19th, SF2

A surprise top 40 entry perhaps for Swedish rock band Ghost. Written by their lead singer alongside Vargas & Lagola (perhaps most famous for being regular collaborators of Avicii) it was originally the second half of a two-track EP in 2019, but gained prominence last year through TikTok virality. Being a rare rock song to reach the mainstream chart the Buzzjack indie crowd were of course here for it, and it sure stood out very well in last year's chart climate albeit not for very long unfortunately. As for whether the titular Mary refers to the mother of Jesus, or Mary Magdalene, it is left to listener interpretation.

 39 70 297 Taylor Swift - Cardigan

135-70-39-

12th, 2020 | 21st, SF1

Taking up no less than 10% of the top 40 this year is Taylor Swift. With 'Blank Space' falling out of favour somewhat this year, we have a more recent single of hers 'Cardigan' to replace it. The song was taken as the first single from her surprise album release 'Folklore' and is one of two titles from the album that place in the countdown. Having started out fairly modestly in the contest it has leaped significantly ever since to now place top 40 for its first occasion. The song was written and produced with Aaron Dessner of The National and is now on track to become Taylor's 8th song to pass 1bn Spotify streams. Both this song and 'Mary On A Cross' had the most top-heavy set of scores within the top 40, making it in with only 11 voters each.

 38 214 297 Avicii vs. Nicky Romero - I Could Be The One

295-309-434-297-81-123-307-66-214-38-xx

19th, 2013 | 17th, SF1

Buzzjack's Avicii fans sure did get together to rally behind this for its final appearance in RotD and that is very most pleasing to see. After spending the decade only being able to make fleeting appearances in the final, the song managed to scrape by the yearly round and the semis with a committed fanbase and now to finally reach a top 40 placement. Which almost makes up for 'Wake Me Up's very poor yearly round performance.. almost. 'I Could Be The One' was recorded in 2011 as 'Nicktim' and spread online through DJ set rips, with Noonie Bao later recording vocals for the version that would end up getting released. The song became one of two UK #1s for Avicii and quickly became a Buzzjack fave of the peak EDM era which it clearly remains to this day. In my biased opinion it is of course a masterclass of a production here and easily scored my 40 points. Now that his peak era turns ten and we sadly have to say goodbye to this next year, his best bet to ever feature in a RotD final again is for 'Lonely Together' to pick up the ground it lost.

 37 51 297 Major Lazer (feat. DJ Snake & MØ) - Lean On

32-83-92-98-95-93-51-37-

4th, 2015

Regaining some more ground this year we have Major Lazer. They entered top 40 in the first year of eligibility and ever since had bubbled at the bottom end of the final scoreboard, however time has clearly been kind to 'Lean On' now as it's back in the top 40 and without the recency bias this time. The track was arguably responsible for making the group a major player in EDM becoming a mammoth hit, which they would follow-up with two more huge hits and a couple extra minor hits in the couple of years that followed. These days however Diplo is bigger as a solo artist. The song remains a great tune on the odd occasion that I hear it so good to see it back on the move up.

 36 82 302 Clean Bandit (feat. Zara Larsson) - Symphony

22-62-77-74-82-36-

5th, 2017

Another song getting a bit of a critical re-evaluation this year comes from Clean Bandit. 'Symphony' likewise had a very good opening year but afterwards had always sat in the bottom half of the final scoreboard. It is now once again their top track of the year however which I can't complain with even if I rank 'Rather Be' above it as it's an excellent dance-pop track. The song was one of the last of theirs to prominently feature orchestral instruments, and also with the pen of Ina Wroldsen. Zara Larsson however provided the track's vocal and it is her only song here as 'Lush Life' failed to make it past the semis.

A bit late to the party here but WOW what a start for 'Doomscroller'! Pretty phenomenal for a 10 minute song that is not even close to being a hit, nice one BuzzJack.

I'm also happy to see such a strong debut for 'Mary On A Cross' here. I was curious to hear that song after the band had previously been sent to BJSC and the chorus was instantly lodged in my brain from day one. We don't talk about the slowed down version that was initially played on the chart show, though :P

Loving that huge increase for 'Let It Happen' + 'Out of the Woods' is my favourite Taylor song so that is a very neat gain too.

Aww, that's a shame that The Mother We Share ended on it's lowest in a while, one of my all time favourite songs :'( Can't complain at it making the final that many times though! A shame also to see Last Man on Earth drop, but last year's placing was pretty shocking so this is still pretty good for a song that wasn't even a hit! (Doomscroller too off to an amazing start *.)

 35 27 305 Dua Lipa - Levitating (Original / DaBaby Remix)

38-27-35-

4th, 2020

Keeping its perfect top 40 streak going we have 'Levitating' which remains the third-placed of four titles off 'Future Nostalgia'. The song with its two main versions combined became Dua Lipa's biggest streaming hit to date surpassing the album's lead 'Don't Start Now' which is yet to come in the countdown. It was a Buzzjack highlight of the album even before its release as a single however and it was no surprise that it became the huge hit it was, doing even better in America where it topped the year-end chart for 2021.

 34 77 308 Weeknd - In Your Eyes

118-77-34-

5th, 2020

Another 2020 hit now we go to The Weeknd with the third-placed of four titles off 'After Hours'. 'In Your Eyes' continued the 80s throwback trend that The Weeknd started with mammoth hit 'Blinding Lights' and re-introduced the sax solo to the chart which Buzzjack was also very fond of. The track has been a strong climber ever since its entry point two years ago but still has some way to go to reach the heights of his two bigger hits in the contest.

 33 65 310 Mike Posner - I Took A Pill In Ibiza (Seeb Remix)

166-177-115-181-63-65-33-

9th, 2016 | 25th, SF2

After scraping past the semi-finals process Mike Posner picked up quite a few extra fans during the final voting and jumps to a new peak in the top 40 for the first time. The track had always been a favourite of Buzzjack but had struggled to get past the semis in its first few years but now gets the peak it deserves. It became one of the year's biggest dance hits and was a surprise return to the chart for Mike Posner who had been absent for half a decade, although he wasn't ever able to follow this with another hit.

 32 37 310 Kygo (feat. Conrad Sewell) - Firestone

158-273-300-334-122-35-37-32-

15th, 2015 | 6th, SF1

Serving as the major breakthrough of Kygo and properly kick starting the tropical house trend in EDM, 'Firestone' once again reaches the top 40 and at a new peak this time. It remains by some distance his most-liked song on Buzzjack and for good reason too, it's a brilliant song and sadly Kygo's more recent output isn't half as good. His two other big hits 'It Ain't Me' and 'Higher Love' did both make it to the semis but fell well short of qualifying.

 31 50 310 Christine And The Queens – Tilted / Christine

38-30-36-42-54-50-31-

3rd, 2016

With the help of Chris releasing a new album this year perhaps we have his biggest hit 'Tilted' (or the original French version 'Christine') back in the top 40 after a three year absence and nearly re-peaking. The song became a surprise UK hit with the assistance of a few TV performances and strong Radio 1 support which even further grew the existing fanbase it had. It certainly was one of the more interesting pop hits of the year anyhow so it's good to see it continuing a rather steady run in the contest.

 30 63 311 Kungs vs. Cookin On 3 Burners – This Girl

96-87-78-124-48-63-30-

2nd, 2016

Kicking off the top 30 is ‘This Girls which climbs 33 places this year to hit an all-time high ranking. Barring 1 year, ‘This Girl’ has always managed to make it through to the final round, however has only polled as high as 48th place, this year however it managed to place 2nd in the 2016 heat and gain 15 votes in the final. It ties with the next 2 songs on points, however received less votes than either of those songs. An absolute summer banger which peaked at Number 2 in the UK (have to say until I checked just now, could’ve sworn it hit Number 1) and to date is Kungs’ only charting appearance, despite releasing some other bangers.

 29 20 311 Rita Ora - Anywhere

13-05-05-18-20-29-

2nd, 2017

Up next ‘Anywhere’ drops 9 places and out of the top 20 for the first time. ‘Anywhere’ initially debuted in 13th place before climbing the following year to hit a peak at 5th place. It remained there for the following year before dropping out of the top 10 and this year drops even further. ‘Anywhere’ automatically went through to the final, finishing in 2nd place in the 2017 vote. In the final it gained 16 votes in total and finishes in 2nd place for that year overall behind ‘Green Light’. ‘Anywhere’ is a fantastic pop song which was blocked from number 1, spending quite a lengthy period stuck at Number 2 – it does however remain a Buzzjack fave and staple of the ROTD final round.

 28 15 311 Dua Lipa - Don't Start Now

08-11-15-28-

2nd, 2019

Another massive pop hit next, which also takes a tumble this year to its lowest ranking to date. ‘Don’t Start Now’ debuted in 8th place, however has dropped every year since and this year doesn’t even manage to place within the top 20. The song finished in second place in the 2019 vote and in the final gained a massive 17 votes, however just 3 of those votes were top 10 rankings. Like ‘Anywhere’, ‘Don’t Start Now’ was a massive hit, however blocked form the top spot, this time by ‘Dance Monkey’. It did however spend 25 weeks within the top 10 and become one of Dua’s biggest ever hits. I’m actually surprised that ‘Don’t Start Now’ doesn’t rank higher usually and ‘Physical’ has taken the ROTD mantel for Dua. I guess both are great pop songs, shame to see this continue to drop though.

 27 14 312 Daft Punk (feat. Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers) - Get Lucky

35-16-22-26-21-16-31-06-14-27-xx

2nd, 2013

Another casualty of last year’s top 20 next as ‘Get Lucky’ slides 13 places to hit its third lowest ranking in its last ROTD. The song has always managed to reach the final round and barring 2 years has always hit the top 30. It reached a peak position in the 2021 ROTD where it placed 6th, however dropped last year and continues to drop this year. Despite finishing in 2nd place in the 2013 vote, ‘Get Lucky’ finishes in 5th place overall with songs which didn’t have a direct route to the final overtaking it. ‘Get Lucky’ was an instant smash when it was released, it was Daft Punk’s first single from their album ‘Random Access Memories’ and was their first output for some time. The song went to Number 1 and went on to become their biggest single to date. It’s a shame to see it go out on a bit of a whimper, but its had a very consistent run over the years and good support.

 26 29 312 Lana Del Rey - Summertime Sadness (Original / Cedric Gervais Remix)

31-107-121-97-99-42-64-91-29-26-xx

4th, 2013

Rounding out this update is another 2013 casualty, however ‘Summertime Sadness’ climbs 3 places and makes its ROTD exit by finishing on a high. Barring 2 years, the song has always managed to reach the final round, however barring its debut year and last year, always tended to be at the lower end of the final vote, this year though it managed 13 votes, with 5 top 10 placements. The song was originally part of Lana’s ‘Born to Die’ album, however then the remix version was released the following year to make it a top 10 smash in the UK. ‘Summertime Sadness’ was the only Lana Del Rey song to make the final this year, which feels a slight underperformance, so it will be interesting to see if any of her later material manages to make it through next year.

Don’t Start Now definitely deserves to still be a little higher, such a fantastic song that really hasn’t aged at all in the last 4 years and still feels like such a moment in pop (along with Blinding Lights) that really shifted the sound of pop, even still to this day, re-popularising that disco & 80s sound.

This Girl was one of the songs that infamously got denied number one by Drake’s mammoth run with One Dance, it spent 4 weeks stuck at number two but would have climbed to number one had ACR been in effect at the time to prematurely kick Drake off.

I thought that was rather known on the forum given how much moaning there was at the time about the (perceived) injustice but I suppose enough time has passed since then that that’s not so remembered here now though.

really great to see the song climb so much this year to a deserving top 40 peak anyhow as one of my absolute favourites. pleased to see Get Lucky out with a perfect top 40 run even if with a bit of a drop, and Summertime Sadness leaving on a high.

Can we just apply retrospective ACR and declare Kungs a #1 oop :kink:

Glad Summertime Sadness is going out with a new peak.

 25 32 312 Carly Rae Jepsen - Run Away With Me

05-01-06-04-12-32-32-25-

3rd, 2015

A slight climb to kick off the top 25 for one of only 2 songs which have won ROTD which are still eligible. ‘Run Away With Me’ climbs 8 places this year to partly reverse its drops from over the years. It spent its first four years in the top 10 and won ROTD in 2017 however has never managed to replicate that success. In 2021 it hit a low at 32 and remained there last year, so its good to see the former winner get a bit of a vote bump this year. ‘Run Away With Me’ was the second song from Carly’s ‘Emotion’ album and the follow-up to the more commercially successful ‘I Really Like You’. However ‘Run Away With Me’ since release has been a firm Buzzjack favourite. It’ll be interesting to see if this continues to climb next year, it seems unlikely it’ll ever challenge for the win again though.

 24 75 316 Paramore - Still Into You

xx-125-116-69-20-48-106-82-75-24-xx

9th, 2013 | 13th, SF1

Another climb next as ‘Still Into You’ surges 51 places this year back into the top 30. Initially not gaining a nomination at all, ‘Still Into You’ reached the final for the first time in 2017 and went on to peak the following year at 20. Since that peak it had a series of drops and dropped out of the top 100, however since hitting 106th place its done nothing but climb and exits ROTD at its second highest ever ranking. ‘Still Into You’ was a song from Paramore’s self-titled album and went on to peak at 15 in the charts and is the last song to make it into the UK top 20.

 23 31 325 Taylor Swift – Style

194-145-156-54-40-57-31-23-

1st, 2015

A big climb next for ‘Style’ which ascends 8 places this year to gain its highest ever ranking on ROTD. The song first made the finals in 2019, however has only made the top 40 twice. Released as part of Taylor’s 1989 album, ‘Style’ went on to peak at 21. Its had a slight resurgence of late from Taylor touring and also in the run-up to the re-release or 1989 later this year. Funnily ‘Style’ finished 1st in the 2015 vote and ahead of ‘Wildest Dreams’, which had to get to the final via the semis, however in the final round ‘Wildest Dreams’ overtakes it and ranks higher. In terms of Taylor Swift songs, the ‘Style’ finishes 3rd behind ‘Exile’ and ‘Wildest Dreams’.

 22 30 331 Hozier - Take Me To Church

199-252-343-495-112-28-30-22-

16th, 2015 | 3rd, SF2

The climbs continues as ‘Take Me To Church’ rises 8 places this year to hit an all-time high. ‘Take Me To Church’ didn’t reach the final round until 2021 where it made a big gain to reach 28th place, last year it dropped 2 places, but this year it takes a further climbs and misses the top 20 by virtue of not having as many voters as the next 2 songs. The song was lucky to make it through to the finals this year as despite a high finishing in the semis, it placed just 16th in the 2015 vote. In the final though it finishes 2nd for that year, behind ‘Wildest Dreams’. Funnily the top 2 from 2015 are songs which had to go the long way round to the final and both outperform those who automatically qualified.

 21 73 331 SAINt JHN - Roses (Imanbek Remix)

47-73-21-

11th, 2020 | 21st, SF2

To finish this batch, we have a fifth consecutive climber as ‘Roses’ jumps 52 places to also reach an all-time high position this year. ‘Roses’ initially debuted at 47, but last year took a drop to 73rd place, this year though it gained quite big support in the final round. Given ‘Roses’ came in 11th place in the 2020 vote and then just about made it through its semi-final, placing 21st, it does incredibly well in the final round and picked up a massive 17 votes in total. Overall it places 5th in terms of all the 2020 songs which made it through to the final round. A great dance song which went to peak at Number 1 in the charts, its good to see this have a resurgence this year and challenge for a top 20 finish.

great to see 'Roses' gaining big this year, wasn't expecting a resurgence for that.

This just keeps on letting me down :(

Happy that Run Away With Me has climbed, but I think it probably is my favourite song of all time now, and really think it deserves at least top 20 :( Obviously I’m just one person though.

Shum doing this well is also WILD but here for it

Taking a big leap into 20th we have 'Prayer In C'. The song spent the last four years stalling outside the top 40 but has suddenly picked up a few extra supporters now to start the top 20 off. Unfortunately the superior Robin Schulz remix 'Waves' did not manage to make it this year however this track remains great too and its jump is pleasing to see. The song was originally put out in 2010 gaining very little attention until Schulz remixed it in 2014 where it would become a huge hit all across Europe. It is the third highest track from 2014.

One of this year's surprise hits in RotD coming from Ukranian Eurovision representatives Go_A. 'Shum' was a fan favourite of the 2021 edition of the contest finishing 2nd with the general public vote behind Måneskin (and 5th officially with the jury vote added) however this ended up having more fans on Buzzjack, with its fusion of traditional Ukrainian folk with EDM helping it stand out. The track was very lucky to make last year's final having scraped through both the initial voting processes but this year managed to gain enough extra support to go straight past the semis. Two more titles from 2021 are yet to come.

 18 13 341 Ariana Grande – Into You

Ariana keeps a top 20 spot with 'Into You'; remaining a firm favourite of the 2016 round voters however seeing a collapse in support in the final as once again Alan Walker surpasses it to claim the top song of its year. Ariana contended strongly for first place for four years but saw a huge drop afterwards which it doesn't seem able to fully recover from. With attention split between many Ariana titles now (she has two more yet to appear in the countdown) it appears the fanbase just can't get behind this one strongly enough anymore.

As Miley Cyrus claims the biggest hit song of 2023 it is perhaps no surprise that this track which signalled the start of her career renaisance continues to move up the rankings and now landing for the first time in the top 20. Having already surpassed the peak 'Uptown Funk' got to for producer Mark Ronson too, it is no surprise this continues to be a firm favourite for Buzzjack as it is an excellent pop record with one of Miley's best vocal performances too. She of course still has one entry left in the running with 'Midnight Sky' which was in the top 5 for the previous two years.

Having taken a hit last year Justin Timberlake comes back into the top 20 to round the decade out on a high with 'Mirrors'. The song became his 4th and final UK #1 hit a decade ago and seemed to be the last song of his Buzzjack really got into as his huge 2016 hit 'Can't Stop the Feeling' doesn't have so good of a rep here. It's certainly a very well put together song with its lengthy runtime working for it too. The song was assisted of course by Timbaland on the production - with lyrics dedicated to wife Jessica Biel and the video dedicated to his grandparents' marriage.
