They allowed Ed and Elton's song to get reset but not any of the other 3+ year old Christmas songs? That's stupid...

It’s not 3 years old yet.

except ofcourse sausage rolls or ed sheeran

Wow this is like the Xmas chart two weeks early with the amount of Xmas songs, guess though it’s December at least!

If the Pogues have been reset we won’t find out until Fridays chart will we?

The Pogues would need a manual reset and they usually appear in the midweeks iirc (definitely did for Kate Bush for example).

I think it's extremely unlikely they'll get one though so wouldn't hold your breath.

they’ve reset songs after artists deaths ie Tina, but Ik tbat was due to the rules that songs can be reset if they haven’t charted in the past 3 years. so I would really like them to do it for the circumstances. Would love to see it make #1, but I don’t think they will
I hope not, can't stand Fairytale of New York its such a shit song! Definitely not one for my Christmas playlist.
Each to their own opinion wise but hard to call FONY a shit song with the production and instrumental and storyline….
It’s only 2 years old so won’t be on ACR until 2025’s chart! (I think thats how it works lol)

It turns 3 on 3rd December 2024 and if it does manage to get reset in November, then we will have to wait until January 2025 for it to go permanent ACR when the Xmas songs quickly decline

I know I'm as guilty of anyone that complains about the Spotify Christmas playlists being Americanised but there's 6 UK Christmas songs in the top 10 although guessing Jorja won't stay there (and no loss because it's crap).
In a way I think that at least the Amazon exclusives bring a little bit of variety to the December charts, but it’s a shame that the likes of Santa Tell Me and Underneath The Tree will potentially be blocked from making the Top 10 for the first time this month thanks to them.

Also I understand why people say the old Christmas songs should be excluded from the chart but what would we be seeing instead if they were? An even less interesting chart surely with Jack Harlow at #1 on ever decreasing sales. There’d also be a real possibility of the Christmas #1 being an Amazon exclusive despite it being like the 30th most listened to song of the week and something most of the public haven’t even had a chance to hear, let alone that’s popular.

I get the argument that people aren’t bothering with new releases because the chart’s full of old Christmas songs, but we know the chart is slow and difficult to penetrate anyway, and even more so in December when people will listen to the old Christmas music whether it’s in the chart or not. So all in all I’m not buying that excluding the Christmas songs would achieve that much.

I still remember Amazon getting Ellie Goulding's cover of River to number 1 - it currently only has 890k plays on Spotify, despite being on there since 2021. That's worldwide streams, too, so god knows how many people in the UK have actually heard it. I doubt many other - if any - number ones of the past 10 years have less than 1m Spotify streams.

To be fair it likely doesn't get much if any playlist support on spotify due to the song having been an Amazon exclusive? Most of the other Amazon exclusives that became top 10 hits and were released on spotify have quite very low streams as well. The only Amazon exclusive I can see that has managed to get put on playlists on spotify/do well is Katy Perry's "Cozy Little Christmas" which should pass 100 million streams this year (currently on ~93 million streams).

My problem (personally) isn’t that Christmas songs clog up the charts. That doesn’t bother me, it’s for a short time etc... I’m just bored of it being the same songs in more or less the order that they are in the playlists every year (with the odd SCR song and Amazon Exclusive thrown into the mix

I guess my issue lies with Spotify and how they curate their playlists/don’t amend them enough etc.. but meh. I always make my own xmas playlists (and throw in the odd few songs from the year that I love)

Also the concept of a Christmas song is arbitrary. Lily Allen's cover of Somewhere Only We Know is now considered as a Christmas song when it really isn't. Ellie Goulding had a #1 with River (Joni Mitchell cover) which isn't generally considered a Christmas song even though it thematically fits. Should these be excluded as well if Christmas songs are not allowed?

yet 2 become 1 doesn't chart, when it really should!

I'm curious to know how Ed and Elton are doing with their playlisting. They've got some solid playlisting on Amazon and they're currently at #7 in the first look, so they're definitely in the running for another big year. Could they get #1?

Amazon is tracking two versions of Sam Ryder's song: the ‘Your Christmas or Mine 2’ version, and the single version. It will be interesting to see what happens when the movie is released, as it’s the focus track. Jorja's song is charting much higher than Lizzo's cover was last year, with similar playlisting. If you ask Alexa to play some Christmas music, you're almost guaranteed to hear either Sam or Jorja's song first.

Unless it’s connected to Spotify like my Alexa device is ;)
