As the energetically punctuated Wham!, George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley combined youthful high spirits with a polished union of disco and soul to become one of the defining pop acts of the 1980s. Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou (Michael) and Andrew John Ridgeley first met in secondary school as 12-year-olds back in 1975. Their 1981 debut as Wham!, the pop-rap snack “Wham Rap! (Enjoy What You Do?),” preached the joy of life on welfare amid rampant British unemployment. As the group’s principal songwriter and frontman, Michael’s exuberant turn on “Young Guns (Go for It!)” precipitated Wham!’s vibrant, post-disco debut, Fantastic, in 1983, which parlayed the duo’s carefree vigor into the glistening hedonism of “Club Tropicana.” Returning in 1984 with the emphatic “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” the group folded Detroit soul into an effervescent pop marvel that sent Wham! to the summit of the U.S. pop charts. Michael took over production on their follow-up album, Make It Big, whose modernized Motown sound on the brooding boogie cut “Everything She Wants” and the resplendent pop-soul of “Careless Whisper” cemented his standing as one of pop’s foremost performer/composers. Kunt and the Gang is a British dark musical comedian from Basildon, Essex, who started performing in 2003. He is also known for founding the spin-off project The Kunts, whose songs entitled "Boris Johnson Is a Fucking C**t" and "Boris Johnson Is Still a Fucking C**t" both reached number five in the UK Singles Chart for Christmas 2020 and 2021. Shame The Pogues didn't hold onto #3 this week, I guess just holding out for if a campaign can get going for it in a couple of weeks but not going to hold my breath, still wonderful to have it back in the top 5 again at least (and it does have quite the history of stalling at #4!)

 

Likewise gahhh at Ariana just making it to #11 again :drama: I hoped from the Monday mids that it might sneak in this week by overtaking Sam Ryder and she did do so in the end, only to still be stuck outside because she fell behind Shaky :lol: Nothing against Shaky though, in fact I like his song more than hers lol, happy to see him resuming top 10 service after the blip last year but I do want to see 'Santa Tell Me' go top 10 one of these years.

The Americanisation of playlists is not all a bad thing as I do love the Dean Martin track so happy to see that getting a new peak again already this year, hopefully the same for The Ronettes and José Feliciano as Christmas approaches as they're both also outpacing last year. Also pleased that Kelly/Ari have got their reset and a solid new peak, personally like this song more than 'Underneath The Tree' although not as much as 'Santa Tell Me'. Not so thrilled about the new peaks for 'Holly Jolly Christmas' and 'Snowman' which are both nothing special.

 

Nice that John & Yoko have made the top 20 for the first time since 2020, maybe the buzz around 'Now And Then' contributing a bit to its return up the pecking order?

 

Yay for Peter Gabriel hanging on for the #1 album (what was that about Radio 1 not mentioning him as a contender? x) and a slightly more healthy list of top 100 single new entries this week including a few that aren't Christmas songs, Noah Kahan now getting a 7th top 100 hit from his album (4 from the original album and 3 from the deluxe edition's added tracks) which has to be quite a rare feat these days especially as none of them charted before the album came out!

No surprise that FONY is number 1 in Ireland this week!
