#04. David Guetta, Anne-Marie and Coi Leray ~ Baby Don't Hurt Me [169 points]

Most hated: rio309, Roba, Jingle Jules [+15]

UK peak: #13

The world's #1 DJ (according to DJ Mag at least) just had the biggest hit in years with 'I'm Good (Blue)' so why not continue the formula eh? Of course another obvious sample from the 90s had to happen next and this time it was the turn of Haddaway's classic hit 'What Is Love' to get the Guetta treatment. You also have Ed Sheeran to blame for being part of the songwriting team behind this but ultimately it was someone else Buzzjack loves to hate on lead vocals in Anne-Marie (congrats to her for being the sole performer here with two entries in the top 10). Coi Leray had just had a viral hit in 'Players' so was a natural choice for the guest rap slot too although the song really could've done without her input. Ultimately no-one liked this more than the original song it was based off and the new parts added to the song were indeed a step down from 'I'm Good' which proved controversial enough last year so it is not much of a surprise we see this in the top 5 here.

Those two are ATROCIOUS! Especially that hideous Meghan Trainor thing.

There are as many as three people rate worse than those?

One of them is LadBaby in fairness which doesn’t really count let’s be real

Alone isn’t awful, just unnecessary. Pakistan was bad, but for dbe standards it was one of the better ones. Pretty boys is a bop and I love it and I stand by that. Sad b!tch was just bad and twust is horrendous.

Mother is bad but doesn’t deserve to be higher than some of the shit we’ve seen so far, same for baby don’t hurt me. It’s just meh but not this bad of an offender imo

Ugh 'Baby Don't Hurt Me' is awful. A way to ruin the original for me. I didn't vote it for it being Anne-Marie though as I do like a few songs of hers!

I don’t mind 'Mother' though

I've been more of a fan/defender of Meghan Trainor than most people over the years but 'Mother' is nightmarish, one of the worst sample usages of the year for sure. 'Baby Don't Hurt Me' is also dreadful but I don't have the same energy to hate it as I did for 'I'm Good (Blue)' with that being more unavoidable and worse imo.

Are we actually coming for a LadBaby/Central Cee top 2 for a second year in a row (as I predicted a year ago iirc)? :cheeseblock:

#03. Central Cee ~ Let Go [206 points]

Most hated: lewis🎄green, seven [+15]

UK peak: #6

In the Hatechart top three for a second year running now we have Central Cee. Last year 'Doja' finished in 2nd missing out by tiebreak to LadBaby however it did attract the most +18s. The follow-up effort wasn't the most hated for anyone this year however got a load of big scores to finish this highly. The main offence committed by this song is the groan-worthy interpolation of one of the 2010s biggest hits "Let Her Go" otherwise it's another song of his where he's moaning about his woman breaking up with him and not taking it very well. Hopefully after "Sprinter" being a huge hit which Buzzjack actually liked for the most part we get less of this sample-heavy rubbish for cheap hits from him next year.

Which means LadBaby are in contention for #1 again this year with their competition being Oliver Anthony Music...

So “Alone” and “Baby Don’t Hurt Me” are considered worse than Morgan Wallen in y’all’s eyes and ears? :drama: Noted
#5-#3 are absolutely diabolical, all definitely deserved to be top 5

5 to 3 all utterly ghastly.

For me the Top 2 contains both the least and most offensive things in the Top 10. LadBaby will hopefully win convincingly given that Sausage Rolls won and this was considerably more obnoxious even than that. As for Rich Men North Of Richmond I understand why it’s here and what it’s thought to represent but purely musically I can’t see that much wrong with it.

#02. Oliver Anthony Music ~ Rich Men North of Richmond [248 points]

Denying a second year running of a Central Cee/LadBaby top two, taking second place is Oliver Anthony Music whose acoustic country ballad became a short-lived viral hit, not for any musical merit it had of course but for it being a political song. With the title referencing the US government it took off in an even bigger way there reaching #1. Whilst he claimed the song to be critical of both major US political parties, the song was championed most by the right-wing with lyrics referencing various RW talking points. The forum leaning mostly the other way sure didn't help the song's appeal here but even so it's not a very pleasant song to listen to and it was disapointing that it seemingly had enough crossover appeal for the UK public to land in the top 40 for a few weeks (though thankfully we didn't get the other politically-boosted US #1 of the year from Jason Aldean making any UK impact).

#01. LadBaby ~ Food Aid  [311 points]

UK peak: #1

You probably all saw it coming and indeed for a second year (and thankfully, last) we have LadBaby on-top of the hatechart. Whilst last year's win was decided by tiebreak, this year's however was even more disliked and "wins" by a landslide, including having a record number of +18s, a whopping 11 of them. After four years of LadBaby doing the same 'joke' and sailing to #1 at Christmas, their fifth one was the most desperate and criticised effort yet. Taking the famous Band Aid song and redoing the lyrics to focus on those in the UK struggling to put food on the table seems like a noble effort but then the inevitable sausage roll lyric ruins the whole thing alongside the addition of another non-singer in Martin Lewis. They don't even try to be funny with this, it just came across as smug which annoyed most of Buzzjack. Overall it's just a very unpleasant song to listen to and their personalities throughout the whole campaign didn't help get most of us on board with it either.

Let's give it up one last time for Buzzjack's least favourite Greggs salespeople :mansoncheer:

LadBaby with a double, worra legend! Still topping charts all over the place.

(for real though Olvier Anthony deserved the "crown" here)

Covering that particular track was taking things way too far imo. Oliver's was more just very annoying for me tbh so a deserved runner up!

[/late] well cannot argue with LadBaby winning again even if very predictably ~ perhaps a more open competition next year, as Creator Universe probably aren't relevant enough to stick around in people's ire to this time next year.

Political connotations aside 'Rich Men North Of Richmond' is also just not very easy on the ears. And to this day I still facepalm whenever I'm reminded that Central Cee went ahead with releasing 'LET GO' after its initial snippet being roundly and rightfully mocked on TikTok (and then facepalm a second time at the fact the public allowed it to actually become a hit anyway). And I say that as someone who's overall neutral if not slightly positive leaning on Cench's discog.

Ty for running this as usual Dan :jump:

2019: Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello - Señorita

2017: Sam Smith - Too Good At Goodbyes

I don't get the hate for these two classics!

(for real though Olvier Anthony deserved the "crown" here)

How true!

It is very offensive to my ears (beyond political controversy)
