Posted January 9, 20241 yr We have had the best, now let’s have the worst! :P What was your worst year for music and why?
January 9, 20241 yr 2016, easily the worst year since I started following music in general. It was hell that year, everything moved at snail pace and every single track either sounded like mid-tempo Cassio keyboard "tropical" or Chainsmokers-esque like a printer jamming. I feel like 2017 and 2018 had a lot of hangers on from this period too.
January 9, 20241 yr Understandable with 2016 being the majorities pick as the charts were exceedingly dull and the dance wasn't at it's highest of quality but there were still some fab tracks as well which I still love to this day! For me I think 2019 just about takes it though as the music quality in general was much lower. It's bad when you struggle to put together a EOY for the first time or when it has like only 3 songs of the year that would make it (which in the end I skipped on for the first time that year)
January 9, 20241 yr Thanks to 2016 a.k.a. Chainsmokers future bass, saying "EDM is dead" & "I miss 2011-2015" becomes the 2011-2015 dance/electronic fans' daily breakfast until now.
January 9, 20241 yr 2016 might be my least favourite year since I've been following music. A few good hits - Rockabye (my favourite song of the year), Shout Out To My Ex, Cheap Thrills and Lush Life to name a few but mostly the charts were tediously slow and awful and I didn't make as many non chart discoveries as I usually would either. Listening back to my 2016 playlist now too, I'm struck by how dated and of its time everything sounds compared to 2014, which was two years earlier. I found it an incredibly dull and samey year for music.

Zara Larsson had a few dance-pop highlights of 2016 musically though, 'Ain't My Fault' I remember liking as its production wasn't as generic. Was preferable to 'Lush Life' as I didn't like anything tropical house sounding. Edited January 9, 20241 yr by TheSnake
January 9, 20241 yr Either 2015 or 2016, I fully believe streaming really slowed down and neutered the charts and new music for a while and so much of it was safe and samey (not helped by the likes of Chainsmokers and dance music going through a dull tropical house phase) and there was so little turnover, even outside the charts, it felt really static. Thankfully, things would adjust in the following few years.
January 9, 20241 yr interesting how tropical house is a bigger musical crime on Buzzjack than the mumble rap/problematic rapper era of 2018
January 9, 20241 yr interesting how tropical house is a bigger musical crime on Buzzjack than the mumble rap/problematic rapper era of 2018 I feel like mumble rap co-existed with other genres and you could ignore it if you wanted to, whereas tropical house and that very specific sound that was everywhere (I can't explain it but basically that annoying high pitched sound that served as the intro for The Cure by Lady Gaga among numerous others and seemed to be in everything for a couple of years) infiltrated its way into EVERYTHING, including dance, pop and beyond. Then again, it's easy to look at 2010-12 through rose tinted glasses and forget the UTTER dominance of the club banger era, which at the time was also exhausting but there seemed to be a lot of other genres still charting too, apart from maybe at the absolute peak in early 2011 when if you weren't a club banger or Adele, you weren't getting in.
January 9, 20241 yr I voted for 2016. Apparently, this was the year when streaming dominated the charts and you had the same songs in the top 40 for months. I have just discovered that 'One Dance' by Drake was number 1 for 16 weeks! The song's not even that good! I also didn't like the tropical house and drill music which was everywhere during the latter half of the 2010s. Edited April 9Apr 9 by montyj

January 10, 20241 yr interesting how tropical house is a bigger musical crime on Buzzjack than the mumble rap/problematic rapper era of 2018 And to think the genre had such a strong start with Kygo - Firestone and Alex Adair - Make Me Feel Good!
January 10, 20241 yr And to think the genre had such a strong start with Kygo - Firestone and Alex Adair - Make Me Feel Good! I Got U by Duke Dumont and Jax Jones before them was very much like tropical house in the chorus!
