I've had a little time to digest this now and can see why people weren't impressed. It was very much 95 minutes of the same stuff from each episode that has aired previously. Select moments were funny but it didn't feel like it was supposed to be *that* funny? The whole thing felt more of a fan pleaser than an actual attempt a finishing the show. I thoroughly enjoyed it but then I rewatch the show regularly so perhaps my opinion is blindsided by my general love for the show/characters that I can't see anything wrong with what we were given

It wasn’t amazing or vintage Gavin and Stacey but a nice predictable ending with a few funny moments. You can tell James wrote it all as it basically was all about him

Surprised at the splurge of comments not enjoying it.

I thought it was the perfect end to the series and really the only end it could've had. It was more of the same and really the series as a whole hasn't put a foot wrong. The last 90 minutes were basically like a mini series of its own - some good call backs to the previous series' and overall a good celebration of the series as a whole.

Was it predictable - possibly... but then its a sitcom and most sitcoms are predictable. I was surprised at Sonia actually still being there, I guessed it wouldn't be Nessa he was going to marry initially, but I assumed Sonia would be long gone :D

Need to give it a re-watch!

After the first watch i was left a little disappointed but i watched it again and do feel it was the right ending and in their own way they have wrapped it up in a way that all the characters have come full circle, its a nice way to finish the series but i dont agree with what Ruth and James said prior to it airing in that when you watch it you will no there is no way for it to continue. While continuing it would ruin it and another Christmas special would probably be stretching it, it is left in a way that it could happen although it never will and i dont want it to.
I did question how Nessa said Smithy and Sonia got engaged the day after she had asked him to marry her, and yet it took 5 years to get to the wedding day. Sonia did not come across as someone who would wait that long for the big day.
COVID?

I'm really looking forward to finding out the consolidated ratings.

Am i right in thinking the last special rose by around 8 million when the consolidated ratings were released.

Okay... So with full knowledge of what I was getting, I re-watched it last night and it was so much better.

I didn't laugh, but I teared up a bit when Smithy realised where his heart truly lay.

It was satisfying to spend time with "old friends". I have watched the first three series and Christmas specials countless times so just watching the characters I was so invested in was enjoyable.

I still maintain the general storyline was unoriginal and not particularly funny, but I think this was a matter of something never going to be able to reach what I had built it up for, but when the dust settled it did it's job and the public would never be happy with any other ending.

I thought it was quite funny myself, a lot of nods to the past and the overall ending it needed. Did feel it was a lot of Smithy but I suppose his and Nessa's were the only story that really needed wrapping up (I didn't feel their was enough Nessa but then her and Pam are my faves).
It wasn't great but it didn't have to be to please many of the fans. It was competently written and performed. Probably not going to be watched many times more by me.

This tbh. Extremely extremely preditanle and it only jad two charactwrs' stories left to wrap up, so wegot James Cordon overload. Not a vintage wpiaose by any means.

Anybody else watch A Fond Farewell tonight? I was welling up at some of it, but couldn't help noticing how awkward James Corden looks when he's talking about it and reacting to some of the things Ruth says when she talks about the show

Lovely to see all the behind the scenes footage from across the series, and how much playing the characters meant to all of the cast

I did watch it. It was nice to see how it came about and some behind the scenes stuff.

And I didn't pick up on that with Corden. If he did seem like that, it's probably just because he's a bit awkward in general. Nothing wrong with that.

The documentary was as beautiful as the real thing. Don’t think James seemed awkward at all? All of the cast come across as amazing people and the love radiating off them seemed very genuine.

He's just an arrogant arse. I refuse to watch anything he's in, except Gavin and Stacey, including that shitty doctor who episode he butchered.

I enjoyed the Fond Farewell documentary more than I enjoyed the Finale.

I actually laughed watching them filming certain scenes which I didn't laugh at during the Finale.

It was amazing to see how invested they all were and how they genuinely seemed to be one big happy family (though I don't remember seeing Dawn on the sofas when they were all together - but she probably had prior commitments).

People will always try to find the negative with James Cordon, and I don't doubt that he's believed his own hype along the way and acted like a tool at times, but everything surrounding Gavin and Stacey and his friendship with Ruth Jones seems genuine and quite lovely. I didn't see anything where I would think otherwise during the documentary.

And that last scene after the credits...Well we've waited years for a glimpse...

I've finally watched this and I thought it was absolutely fine. I thought it was pretty well judged, yes it was kinda predictable but it gave people the ending they would have wanted and sometimes it is nice when creators do that. Final episodes can often be let downs but I left this one feeling satisfied and smiling.

Think I'll watch the documentary too given people's comments in here.
