That version of 'Love Shy' is a quite good song but I prefer Platnum's version in 2008 lol.

I like the Electric Boutique remix of Love Shy.

Week 39:

Zombie Nation - Kernkraft 400 – iconic classic

Anastacia - I'm Outta Love

Green Day - Minority

Pink - Most Girls – agreed on it being her best from the first era.

Billie Piper - Something Deep Inside

Timo Maas/Martin Bettinghaus - Ubik – Indie UK Chart #1 here :P slick track anyhow. The songs that topped that chart in 2000 (or up to 2004 even) leave you a bit confused though lol.

Sisqo - Unleash The Dragon – not as good as 'Thong Song' of course but still don't mind this too much.

Soulwax - Too Many DJs

Foo Fighters - Breakout

Scott And Leon - You Used To Hold Me – sounded promising at first but descends into a rather uninteresting track.

Mariah Carey Featuring Westlife - Against All Odds – never liked it then and don't now. Below mid collab.

Week 40:

Placebo - Slave To The Wage – this is very strong!

SuReal - You Take My Breath Away – another UK indie #1 :') which knocked Timo Maas off  really nice dance track though.

Architechs Featuring Nana - Body Groove

Orion - Eternity

Roni Size And Reprazent - Who Told You

Sister Bliss - Sister Sister

The Beautiful South - Closer Than Most – it's no 'Perfect 10'.

Melanie B - Tell Me

Monsta Boy Featuring Denzie - Sorry (I Didn't Know)

DJ Luck And MC Neat Featuring JJ - Ain't No Stoppin' Us – wasn't crazy on 'A Little Bit of Luck' but it sounds like a masterpiece compared to this lol.

Iceberg Slimm - Nursery Rhymes – crap

a lot of this group were crap or mid but the top 4 at least are the better ones in the bunch with Placebo my fave discovery!

I know it’s nothing earth shatteringly innovative but “By Your Side” is such a warm hug of a song.

9 Sade By Your Side It's hard to pin down what I love about this as there's nothing unusual musically, but somehow it's beautifully tender and warm

8 York Farewell To The Moon A similar style to "On The Beach" and just as good with a lovely chilled out vibe, ethereal female vocals and a strong guitar riff

7 DJ Zinc 138 Trek Debut hit for this UK producer: a frenetic but enjoyable drum and bass style instrumental that goes in interesting directions

7 A1 Same Old Brand New You 881st #1: easily their best track to date in quite a similar power breakup pop style to "Bye Bye Bye"; this still sounds good

6 Marilyn Manson Disposable Teens The lead from their 4th album: a good goth metal track that samples "Revolution", about teenagers rising up against authority

6 Girl Thing Girls On Top Their 2nd hit before being dropped, perhaps unjustly: this isn't hugely original but it's a strong piece of 80s style funky pop

5 The Offspring Original Prankster Lead single their 6th album and similar I. style to "Pretty Fly…": I admire the composition but it's slightly raucous to my ears

5 Mary Mary I Sings Their 2nd and last hit: this is a nice catchy little RnB track but unsurprisingly not in the same league as the unique "Shackles"

4 Beatchuggers Featuring Eric Clapton Forever Man (How Many Times)? Only hit for this Danish house producer with a dance version of an 80s Eric Clapton track: nothing special but works nicely

4 Mansun Electric Man Not surprised this performed much less well then "I Can Only Disappoint U": it has some good elements but a weak chorus

3 Backstreet Boys Shape Of My Heart Another ballad but this is quite a bit weaker than "Show Me…": lacks individuality and seems to use the Westlife recipe book

2 Tom Jones And Heather Small You Need Love Like I Do A Gladys Knight And The Pips song: I can't fathom why this collaboration happened, let alone why they did such a dull cover

Saturday's batch:

The Tweenies :cheeseblock: I was very into them as a small child and seem to recall having an album of theirs on yellow cassette

I remember both the Kandi and Kristine Blond songs from Kisstory! I quite like the former track and was surprised to learn about her writing credits for some big songs - 'No Scrubs' as mentioned, plus her name is even attached to 'Shape of You' in more recent times, thanks to similarities drawn to the TLC song. Like others, the Platnum cover was my introduction to 'Love Shy' (one of the holy trinity of Bluetooth back-of-the-bus bangers along with 'Heartbroken' and 'What's It Gonna Be?') and I actually prefer it, not a huge fan of the vocals on the Kristine Blond one, a bit shrill in places.

'The Man With The Red Face' is another one that made it on to that fabulous Big Brother dance compilation I mentioned before, nice top pick *.* the electronic production reminds me of Chicane a bit.

The only one of that batch I bought on single was Farewell To The Moon. Another strong single from York!

But the A1 song was really good, definitely nice to see them get an original song to No.1, although it dived to No.8 I think the week after.

By Your Side is indeed a lovely song, I think it's the production and Sade's beautiful voice that makes it so good. 231m Spotify streams is incredible for a song that came and went quite quickly, so it's clearly still held in high regard.

I'd rate Shape Of My Heart quite a lot higher than that. It's generally regarded as one of their better singles, with the classic Cheiron/Max Martin production, and was memorably used in the musical & Juliet. It's their fourth biggest song on Spotify (349m streams), and was a definite highlight when I saw them live at the O2 a couple of years back. It's streets ahead of My Love I think.

Shackles succeeded in being a rare religious/gospel song with crossover/radio pop appeal but while I Sings sounds feasibly like a good church singalong, it doesn't really have any commercial potential so I'm not too surprised it didn't do much.

I really didn't enjoy Girl Thing very much, they felt particularly brash in an overly clearly targeted and marketed way and it felt a bit like 'you liked Spice Girls so you will like this'. It fell a bit flat for me on this single too, although on their album (which is on Spotify) was the original version of Pure & Simple - I wonder if that could have saved their career if they'd got to it before Hear'say did. Clearly an MOR mid-tempo worked well for Atomic Kitten a few months later.

Forever Man was ok, wasn't mad on it but interesting to hear Eric Clapton on a dance track.

Not a fan either of You Need Love Like I Do, just sounds like two people trying to outsing each other for no reason on a very pedestrian cover with bland production. I liked the other singles from Reload but this was one too many.

Week 41:

All Saints - Black Coffee

Delerium Featuring Sarah McLachlan - Silence (Remixes)

Texas - In Demand

Eminem - The Way I Am

Stephen Gately - I Believe – probably his best solo track come to think of it but also liked 'New Beginning'.

Baha Men - Who Let The Dogs Out?

Supersister - Coffee

Everclear - Wonderful

Rolf Harris – Fine Day – I mean it is quite catchy for what it is

Whitney Houston And Enrique Iglesias - Could I Have This Kiss Forever – underwhelming collab.

Vengaboys Cheekah Bow Bow - (That Computer Song) – they lost it here didn't they. Worst song from them so not a surprise it didn't do great.

Week 42:

Alice Deejay - The Lonely One – didn't recall this one until it was sent to BJSC several years back and it's an euphoric tune.

Robbie Williams And Kylie Minogue - Kids

Muse - Muscle Museum

U2 - Beautiful Day

Atomic Kitten - Follow Me – decent

Lionel Richie - Angel – Do recall this to some extent but it does sound nice to me. Nothing incredible but fine for a 2000 Lionel Richie song.

Erasure – Freedom

Warrior - Warrior

Azzido Da Bass - Dooms Night {2000 Re-Release}

Ed Case Ft Shelley Nelson - Something In Your Eyes – tried to like this more as she has a solid voice and the production has some decent elements but the chorus is really boring.

Madison Avenue - Who The Hell Are You? - nondescript for me. 'Don't Call Me Baby' is the better track of course.

R. Kelly - I Wish – He has better songs of this type. This one drones on.

Another really strong week here: this time I’m particularly bowled over by both the quality and the variety of the 5 new entries in the Top 6. “One More Time” has to take the top billing but “Gravel Pit” is a classic of its genre and a unique track too.

9 Daft Punk One More Time A stunning track from the French duo with an iconic auto-tuned hook with house style production, and a thrilling quiet section

9 Wu-Tang Clan Gravel Pit Only Top 40 for this East Coast hip hop group, sampling "Back And Forth" by 80s group Cameo: it's a fantastic enchanting track

8 LeAnn Rimes Can't Fight The Moonlight 882nd #1 from "Coyote Ugly": given how middle of the road her prior mammoth hit was this is an incredibly strong pop song

8 Darude Feel The Beat A worthy follow up to "Sandstorm" with the same style hook but a great tune and also a really interesting slower middle section

7 Badly Drawn Boy Once Around The Block {2000} A re-release as it reached #46 last year: I love how the meandering "ba ba ba" on this indeed feels like going for an aimless walk

7 Alan Braxe And Fred Falke Intro Only credit for these French DJs though Alan was part of Stardust: this builds into a really hypnotic and effective repeated hook

7 Artful Dodger Featuring Lifford Please Don't Turn Me On Their 4th Top 10 within a year with another guest vocalist; again a really well crafted song with a part pop part garage flavour

6 666 Devil Only Top 40 for this German DJ act and it would seem rude not to give it a 6, but it's an enjoyable rather frenzied dance track

6 Lucy Pearl Don't Mess With My Man 1st Top 40 for this US RnB group: not a personal favourite but a strong track that will be covered and feels well remembered

5 Enya Only Time Lead from her 5th album and it's Enya alright: a nice song with warm orchestral production but nothing we haven't heard before

4 Richard Blackwood Someone There For Me The last of his 3 hits: it's not a bad little tune but standard 2000 RnB; he's gone from having too much attitude to being bland

3 Savage Garden Hold Me Not an unpleasant listen but quite syrupy and a little drippy; they're clearly running out of steam and this is their last Top 20 hit

Excellent picks from the last couple of batches - 'By Your Side' made my top 10 of the year and 'One More Time' top 3 behind only the two RHCP songs last time I compiled such a list. The latter runs 'Around The World' very close as Daft Punk's ultimate classic. Elsewhere, 'Intro' from the same wheelhouse is one I've heard Radio 1 play as a retro track, the sample is from The Jets - Crush On You, and I hadn't realised 'Can't Fight The Moonlight' had such a long Top 75 run with a drop every week after entering - possibly the record at 17 weeks?

One More Time is iconic, Feel The Beat is just brill

Omg I know the Wu-Tang track, so catchy - great sample

I remember during this week Ronan appearing on radio to review the week’s biggest new releases. He ranked “Walking Away” top and “Operation Blade” bottom, saying he didn’t like the latter at all. At that point his own track was heading for the Top 5, but on Sunday he was furious to discover that he had been edged out by… you guessed it.

8 Public Domain Operation Blade (Bass In The Place) The breakthrough hit for this UK electronic trio, this isn't for the faint hearted but a brilliantly effective piece of hardcore trance

8 Destiny's Child Independent Women - Part 1 883rd #1 from "Charlie's Angels" and featuring the group's new line-up, it's an excellent confident and classy girl group track

7 Paul Van Dyk We Are Alive A remix of "Alive" by Swedish singer Jennifer Brown, this is another lovely trance hit for Paul with an ethereal and joyous feel

7 Bomfunk MC's Uprocking Beats Their only follow up hit: I do think this is distinct enough from "Freestyler" to work in its own right and it's a punchy quirky track

6 Craig David Walking Away His 5th big hit in 12 months: I think the verses on this are really strong with lovely melodic lines, but the chorus slightly bland

5 MJ Cole Featuring Elisabeth Troy Hold On To Me It's the same vocalist as "Crazy Love" but credited here: a decent track with some interesting touches but lacking a strong hook

4 Point Break What About Us In this miss the Top 20 and you're dropped world they won't be seen again: the chanting is slightly odd but it's not a bad song

3 True Party Whazzup A hit about the Budweiser advert inspired catchphrase: it was always annoying but this track isn't too bad with quite a fun rap

2 Ronan Keating The Way You Make Me Feel A Top 5 miss after 2 chart toppers: this seems to be an attempt at country but it falls flat and comes across as rather formulaic

2 True Steppers Featuring Brian Harvey True Step Tonight Last hit for the duo and after their 2 strong garage singles this forgettable mess with no distinct melody is a real let down

1 *NSync This I Promise You 4th and final single from "No Strings Attached": Justin's voice can be slightly whiny on a drippy ballad like this; not pleasant

Not much to write home about in Monday's batch for me but that is swiftly followed by some gems in the Wednesday one!

'Can't Fight The Moonlight' is a huge step up in LeAnn's material for me too! Diane Warren wrote both of her big hits to date but I find this song a lot more commanding, key changes and all - plus LeAnn puts in a hell of a vocal performance, wild that she was still only 17 by this point. 'Gravel Pit' is fantastic as well, for some reason I thought it was a 90s song until now! I guess we're only a year into the 2000s, but still  'One More Time' is a great pick for top favourite, that has really stood the test of time and remains as warm as ever, I really enjoy its build-up too.

Ooh 'Intro' was entered to the very first BJSC spin-off that I was ever a part of - the 00s Dance Anthems one, was sent by Doctor Blind! Did not know that one of them was a member of Stardust, but upon a relisten, that makes total sense. 'Feel The Beat' was also sent to a BJSC spin-off, the later 90s vs. 00s one. I'm not quite as fond of that one despite liking 'Sandstorm' - the vocal line grates on me after a little while and the production is treading pretty familiar ground for the most part.

I mostly know 'Only Time' as a meme song, playing when something ends in disaster  Enya seems like quite an unlikely artist for such a use, but there we go.

Week 43 & 44

Samantha Mumba - Body II Body – think this was a great use of the Bowie track. Catchy pop at it's finest.

Ricky Martin - She Bangs – always found this to be a hoot of a record.

Coldplay - Trouble

Gabrielle - Should I Stay – blimey forgot this one. Really heartfelt and intense ballad from Gabrielle!

David Gray - Please Forgive Me

Martine McCutcheon - I'm Over You

Steps - Stomp – I did actually not mind this so much at the time although it's a cheesy as they come.

Afro Medusa – Pasilda

Iron Maiden - Out Of The Silent Planet

K-Gee - I Don't Really Care

Fatboy Slim Sunset - (Bird Of Prey)

Spice Girls Holler/Let Love Lead The Way – Not heard 'Let Love Lead The Way' before and it sounds boring oops.

JJ72 - October Swimmer

Blur - Music Is My Radar – after their strong singles in 'Tender' and 'Coffee & TV' this was... very meh for their standards.

Jill Scott - Gettin' In The Way

Idlewild - Roseability

Honeyz - Not Even Gonna Trip

Damage - Rumours

I can't disagree with your thoughts on Wednesday's batch Julian, what a strong bunch of new entries all in the same week, we were really spoilt.

Discovery was such an epic album, and One More Time the perfect lead single, such a shame it didn't get to No.1 but then Can't Fight The Moonlight was a fantastic song from LeAnn Rimes. Interesting that she went so pop when she was usually a country artist.

Gravel Pit is a great track that isn't played anywhere near enough these days, very infectious.

Feel The Beat I actually preferred to Sandstorm myself, which I know is sacrilege but it's an awesome dance track, and I love the slower mid section too.

Oh, Once Around The Block I didn't recognise by name but do upon listening to it, really nice bassline melody.

Intro is a great dance track, some great French house hit the charts in 2000. And I recall that 666 song, I often have that in my head. 'D.e.v.i.l I'm the devil'.

Don't Mess With My Man is a great track, deserved to be a lot bigger for how influential it ended up being for later sampling, including that Ed Sheeran track.

Don't really care too much for the Artful Dodger song, and the Richard Blackwood song is the worst of a good bunch for me.

Only Time is another beauty from Enya, one of her big classics and by some way her most played on Spotify. Was much bigger elsewhere, No.1 in Germany, top 10 in the US.

And Hold Me was ok, there were better songs on the album they could have released ahead of this though.

From Thursday's batch, the only one I bought was Paul Van Dyk, he had a run of excellent singles from that album.

Independent Women is a huge classic though, really felt at the time like the move to A-list for Destiny's Child, even though Say My Name is bigger these days.

Other than that, not a great week overall. Operation Blade was very hard for the charts at the time, a similar song using the same sample charted around the same time in the top 10, I guess it's coming up.

Ditto the dreadful Wasssupp trend (school playground memories of horror :drama:) and the two singles it produced. Was this the UK take on it? Sounds like it. Quite amazed this one is on Spotify actually, thought it was well forgotten (only just over 1,000 plays!

Didn't think much at all of the *NSync, Ronan, Point Break or True Steppers songs, all poor.

Uprocking Beats wasn't amazing, but ok. They had a couple of others songs I heard at the time called B Boys and Fly Girls and Sky's The Limit, both of which I liked more.

Walking Away was all over the radio for so long, I agree the verses are better than the chorus.

Your average score level is very high.

Edited by Last Dreamer

OMG that "whassup?" thing was a repressed memory  I had forgotten that it was from a Budweiser campaign and mostly recall it being referenced by other people, either in real life or on TV shows. I don't think I need to hear that True Party song ever again

Soundtrack #1s coming through thick and fast with the back-to-back of 'Can't Fight The Moonlight' from Coyote Ugly and now 'Independent Women - Part 1' from Charlie's Angels reaching the summit! I do prefer their other #1 hit but this is a fun anthem nevertheless.

Public Domain is my favourite of this section too, I didn't know who the artist/title was until a couple of years ago, when it turned up in my exercise class (a particularly exhausting few minutes during that ) - very harsh, in-your-face production that stands out a lot.

Batch 44...

Everyone seems to love Trouble, it's a 7/10 for me, not a Coldplay classic but good. Please Forgive Me was also nice, a decent 7/10. Body II Body was more to my taste and a generous 8. Music Is My Radar has dropped off my radar over the years, and I only ever rated it a 5 at best.

She Bangs still, errr, bangs, though, of all the tracks here this is the one thats still fresh in my mind, 9/10 for Ricky. Less memorable (but also a 9/10 from me) Should I Stay from Gabrielle. Sunset is one I recall quite liking, but not loving - 6/10.

October Swimmer, not heard it since it fell out the charts, but I always enjoyed JJ72 angst-ridden stuff, and a good 9/10. I Don't Really care About K-Gee either, I'll give it 4/10 and he can be grateful for it. Holler I liked, have a 7 Spice Girls. I'm Over You is worth an 8. Out Of The Silent Planet is a book I read when I was 13. It's better than Iron Maiden.

Jill Scott was quite classy, have a 6/10 Jill! Stomp I liked even more, an actual 7 - in other words pretty much what all their singles of the time rated from me. Honeyz, I agree, a mere 3/10 from moi, not one of their best. Rumours was even worse so I'll go along with 2, too...

I have no memory of Laurent garnier, I assume I thought it was a deodorant! Doves ditto, no memory of it!

De La Soul I quite liked enough for a 5/10, and Beautiful Inside worth a good 8/10. I generally liked Louise's stuff but never raved about it. Kandi's is one I recall a bit, think it must have been a US radio hit, 7/10, and Nelly was all over US radio at the time with Country Grammar and also a 7 from me.

Tweenies. I wasn't 5 or 6 years old, so pass! Christina Aguilera another 7, not much to get excited about so far here. Corrs even less so, 3/10. Limp Bizkit marginally better at 4/10 and Westlife a wafer-thin mint better than Limp Bizkit. Not a great week!

so lets' move on to the next one!

Sade always pleasant, a 6/10 niceness here. York passed me by, DJ Zinc eluded me, and A1 was also a nice nough 6/10.

Marilyn Mansun keeps the low-quality going, and Girls On Top was a fab 80's sit-com that's been unjustly forgotten - French & Saunders, Ruby Wax and Tracey Ullman starred, plus many a guest fabness. This record was a 4.

The Offspring is the best so far at a whopping 7/10, always dependable lads for a bit of fun, but Mary Mary were def unshackled. Beatchuggers sound like a malapropism, but Eric Clapton lifted it up enough for a 4/10. Mansun, faves of mine (see the recent Britpop contest) had an also good 7/10 with Electric Man, but it's left to backstreet Boys to rise as high as an 8. Yes, things are not classic still. Best youtube backstreet boys moment, google Whose Line Is It Anyway Colin Mochrie & Ryan Styles "Arctic Tern". Creases me up everytime. Tom Jones is 84 this week, and I've seen both Tom & Heather in concert and I also rated this an 8. Gladys was pretty good, but I liked Tom's album and bought it (Reloaded), he was on a revival roll with us older music fans.

well it's been a few weeks since we had a classic, so One More Time is a relief! A great 9/10 from me too. Still a radio regular, still sounds great. Gravel Pit was also one I liked a lot more than I expected to, never gets played on radio though, but a def 8/10. Can't Fight The Moonlight was a biggie, and I can sing it easily, a radio staple, Diane Warren treading water was my reaction though, 5/10. I havent got more fond of it with time.

Darude I missed, Badly Drawn Boy always wash over one pleasantly and then get forgotten, this one even a 7/10 but no memory of it at all! Lucy Pearl was also a 7/10 but rings a vague bell these days. Enya on t'other hand was a def 9/10, always pleasantly moody with a nice video. Savage Garden def getting drippy by this point but scraped a 7/10 from me. I expect it'd be a 5 at best these days.
