August 7, 2024Aug 7 9 The Avalanches Frontier Psychiatrist A joyous experimental track with a delightfully mad hotchpotch of samples including a comedy sketch and a 60s instrumental TjllcUsia4A 'but SURELY expulsion is not the answer??'. *.* Iconic song, I've got the CD single as I used to buy all my personal chart number 1s physically where I could. V fond memories of watching that video and Roger Sanchez's “Another Chance” (another personal chart No1) after coming home from school. It's amazing how even just listening back to some of those songs really takes you back to specific memories or times in your life. This knocked “Digital Love” off number 1 and it must've been difficult to do because this was this summer of '01 that I bought my first ever album with my own money (Discovery) for I think £15.99(!) and I distinctly remember wearing out the portable CD player listening to it that entire summer.
August 8, 2024Aug 8 I've only just discovered this thread! Really enjoying reading through it week-by-week and the trips down memory lane! Looking forward to more
August 8, 2024Aug 8 Author A few good ‘uns here. “Bootylicious” is a classic. Train are a little MOR but I have a real soft spot for them and “Drops Of Jupiter” is such a heartwarming track. But at the top I’m putting this new discovery by Cosmic Rough Riders. The lyrics have some similarities with the Beatles track, and it’s just a really fabulous piece of music. 9 Cosmic Rough Riders Revolution (In The Summertime) 1st hit for the Scottish band: this never received the attention it deserved as it's a beautifully written song with special lyrics 8 Train Drops Of Jupiter (Tell Me) 1st hit for this US band from their 2nd album: I find this very beautiful lyrically and musically it has a real warmth and charm 8 Destiny's Child Bootylicious Their 5th hit of the century and they're all great: while not a personal favourite this might be the most culturally significant 8 Turin Brakes Mind Over Money Slightly bigger than "Underdog" and an excellent follow up, with the bleak piano chords and the expressive undulating vocal 7 Mauro Picotto Like This Like That He is always good value and this is another thumping anthemic club track led by a very captivating and smooth synth melody 7 Depeche Mode I Feel Loved Quite similar in style to "Dream On" with the gently bubbling track behind big booming emotive vocals: it's a very fine track 7 Cosmic Gate Fire Wire The 1st Top 40s for "cosmic" acts arriving together: a really strong and stark instrumental trance track from this German duo 6 R.E.M. All The Way To Reno An understated track without the immediacy of "Imitation Of Life", but with an excellent bassline and very strong production 6 Catatonia Stone By Stone The only post '99 hit for the Welsh band: a spirited performance from Cerys and a nice song; the chorus could be stronger 5 Janet Jackson Someone To Call My Lover Another use of the "Gymnopédie" melody: I like the punchy chorus and it has her usual sweet style but doesn't stand out 5 Tweenies Do The Lollipop There's a limit to how enjoyable this can be with the child orientated vocals, but actually it's a really funky retro style track 4 Gypsymen Babarabatiri A 1982 hit by Beny Moré and Perez Prado turned into a club hit here by Todd Terry: not much originality but a great tune 4 Geri Halliwell Scream If You Wanna Go Faster After 5 Top 2s this reaching #8 must have been a surprise, especially as it's not a bad track but the vocals need more power 3 Crazy Town Revolving Door Their 2nd and last Top 40: whereas "Butterfly" has an infectious pulsating rhythm this feels like it can't quite get into gear 3 Jaheim Just In Case His 2nd hit and this has some more energy and soul to it than the 1st but it's still far too lacking in oomph to be memorable 2 Shortie Vs Black Legend Somebody Only hit for this DJ sampling "Dr Love" by First Choice: has the tinny Black Legend sound but the track doesn't do very much 2 Atomic Kitten Eternal Flame 904th #1: a Bangles cover capitalising on their newfound superstar status; unfortunately it doesn't really have any character 1 O-Town All Or Nothing A Boyz II Men style track here: the rhyming of "all" with "all" irrationally annoys me: aside from that it's overblown and turgid kqaweETkgg4 2001 Week 33: #863 18/08/2001 So Solid Crew 21 Seconds 1 {1}-3-2-6-8-16-21-29-32-38-40-43-63-64R(2)-69->15 #864 18/08/2001 Jennifer Lopez Ain't It Funny 3 {3}-10-13-17-24-33-43-64-59R(3)->9 #865 18/08/2001 M.O.P. August 9, 2024Aug 9 First time hearing 'Revolving Door' and the production sounds identical to 'Complete' by Jaimeson which is a couple of years away in chart history. So either the latter samples this or they both sample something older. The YouTube comments of 'Complete' mention the riff being old Sky EPG music too
August 10, 2024Aug 10 Week 24: Daydream In Blue (oh this, a wonderful track this one) > New Born > Romeo (not a big fan of Basement but this is one of their better songs). > We Come 1 > Lullaby > Another Day In Paradise > Astounded > Here And Now/You'll Be Sorry (only high cause I didn't overly mind HaN although agree it's still plain, not keen on 'You'll Be Sorry' though). > Ocean Spray > Waiting For The Summer > Never Enough (recognised and sounded good to start but got bored half way through) > Someone Like You > Close To You (pretty drab from him). Week 25 – pretty solid bunch save for the last 3 in the rank here. All I Want > My Way (might be the only one but I really liked this one and even prefer it to 'Rollin' lol) > Have A Nice Day > Digital Love > Drive > Best Friends (the memories of watching the show at the time and thought this was fun as cheesy as it sounds looking back, they did have a better song follow though) > 10 In 01 > Until The End Of Time > Rock Da Funky Beats > I Forgot > Booo > Fiesta Week 26 – love the first two, next three are fine, don't care for the rest. Papercut > There You'll Be > Lady Marmalade > Let U Go > Voodoo > It's Over Now > Video > Jonathan David > Musak >This Time Around Week 27 19/2000 (all about the fast remix for me as it's the one I associate with more. Much prefer this to 'Clint Eastwood' as well) > Getting Away With It (All Messed Up) (oh yes this one, definitely heard it before and sounds strong too) > Million Miles Away > The Way To Your Love (liked this one much more than P&S) > Baddest Ruffest > Innocente (Falling In Love) > Hard To Explain/New York (New York better one, the former didn't keep my attention, boring) > U Remind Me > More Than That > Another Lover Week 28 Another Chance > Perfect Bliss (this is just bliss to listen to for me and should've been bigger imo) > Hash Pipe > Heaven Is A Halfpipe (this is a alternative bop sns.) > The Rock Show > A Little Respect (I like both versions  )> Broke/Won > Irresistible> Turn (not sounding like a highlight of theirs for me sadly) > So What If I (not crazy on this but a clear last from a really solid bunch for me) Week 29 – another solid week, everything good bar the last one. Castles In The Sky > Eternity/The Road To Mandalay > Frontier Psychiatrist (only really came across this last year but it's a grand and interesting track coupled with an extremely odd video lol) > Purple Pills > Sometimes > Perfect Gentleman > Juxtapozed With U > We Need A Resolution > Pop (sounds memorable and is decent for them considering not a fan generally) > Soul Heaven (repetitive and meh and a massive gap from this and 'Pop' ranked before it)
August 10, 2024Aug 10 Author First time hearing 'Revolving Door' and the production sounds identical to 'Complete' by Jaimeson which is a couple of years away in chart history. August 11, 2024Aug 11 Oops, I fell five batches behind. Let me catch up with my highs and lows of each bunch. Getting Away With It (All Messed Up) I do think is one of James' most memorable post-90s singles, I remember it very well and it has a strong chorus. I agree with Roba that the faster remix of 19/2000 is better, whereas I probably prefer the album version of Clint Eastwood. Innocente is quite nice, from the singer of Sixpence None The Richer too, but I agree isn't really a patch on Silence. The Way To Your Love is a far better track than Pure and Simple for me, with the Scandinavian pop sound prevalent at the time. The single mix that isn't on Spotify really lifts it high above the album version though. More Than That is definitely overwrought, that I agree with, one of BSB's worst singles for sure. And that Dane song was another complete miss for me, I didn't get on with his solo material at all. U Remind Me is still heard a lot today I think, one of Usher's bigger classics from the period. ------ My favourite in the second group is the blissful Perfect Bliss, a very breezy Corrs-meets-Scandipop esque radio track that I bought back then and still love a lot today. Of the college rock and pop punk, it's a hat trick for me on Wheatus/OPM/Blink-182 - all remind me of my school days in a positive way. I know Wheatus weren't winning any awards for originality but I thought A Little Respect actually worked pretty well in that style (it reached No.2 in my chart at the time no less). Heaven Is A Halfpipe I never really hear anymore but back then it was everywhere. Obviously Another Chance is a dance classic, and I can't argue with the high score for that. A captivating video/story too. I very barely remember that Feeder song, not one of their stronger releases. And Broke/Won is ok, I think I like Broke more but wasn't loving either particularly. I wasn't ever a fan of Jessica Simpson (apart from With You), and Irresistible didn't really change that, it sounds like a Samantha Mumba b-side to me. The Damage song I thought was better than their previous single, the version on Now 49 anyway, which seems to be on Spotify as the Mushtaq mix. ------ Castles In The Sky is my easy favourite in the third group and my third favourite song of 2001, I remember being completely transported when I first heard it - I think on Dave Pearce's Dance Anthems after the chart show. Such cool production and lyrics and it stood out in the chart at the time. Was nice to see it climb to No.3 in the end. Frontier Psychiatrist is wonderful and a great follow up single for The Avalanches, the samples are genius. I think Juxtapozed With U is probably my favourite single by Super Furry Animals, sounds like a very classic single and I'm surprised it didn't go top ten, it's easily their most played song on Spotify. Perhaps their commercial stock wasn't quite enough to get it there at the time. I've got an opposite opinion on Robbie, I didn't care that much for The Road To Mandalay - it was lyrically interesting but I found the 'bum bum bum ba ba bum bum bum' chorus annoying. Eternity is quite lovely, written about his friendship with Geri Halliwell I believe and a very sincere single with a quite lovely chorus. Quite interesting that he never added Eternity to a studio album, I don't recall Robbie releasing many standalone singles. I do like Perfect Gentleman quite a bit, that has a very infectious chorus and I remember it being a big radio hit for Wyclef. Pop is interesting because it feels sonically very different for *NSYNC, a world away from the Cheiron pop of their previous album and showed some real sonic evolution with more focus on a crunchy bassline, which is where pop was heading at the time (see Britney later in the year). For me this single was in hindsight one of the most notable strides forward that manufactured pop music took in the very early 00s and I think it deserved better than No.9, but they were always underrated here compared to the US. Ironic considering that Bye Bye Bye is back in the chart now and because Justin became such a huge solo artist (compared to BSB who were bigger as a band but didn't spawn any notable solo artists). I think Purple Pills is a lot better than any other D12 song but I still wouldn't say I love it. Funny that it was censored to Purple Hills on the radio.
August 11, 2024Aug 11 My favourite from the batch after that is, surprisingly for me, U2. That Tomb Raider mix (that in a masterstroke of good timing was finally added to Spotify on Friday) that was used for the single version was awesome, such an anthemic track. I think Boss Of Me is possibly my second favourite in the batch, but maybe just because of nostalgia as I was a big fan of Malcolm In The Middle at the time. Was cool to see another hit for They Might Be Giants too. Sail Away is lovely too, yet another classic single from White Ladder. The rest of this batch is just average singles by artists who had better for me. Sisqo, Oxide and Neutrino, Ricky Martin, Kaci - all ok. Soul Sound was fine but shouldn't have been a single when One Touch had so many strong songs on it that would have shown a different side to them to. I was disappointed in Loverboy and the whole Glitter album, after loving Mariah's few albums prior to that. I know it famously wasn't a commercial success either and I can honestly see why, each single - including this one - was all very 'I've done this before but better'. A weird thing I remember about Glitter is that it came with a glossy photographic paper style booklet, which I think is the first album I owned that had that. Meet Her At The Love Parade is a decent dance track, with a good bleepy hook, but it has never been a huge favourite of mine. ------ Quite a bumper group to finish and I'm afraid to reveal that my favourite is Eternal Flame, which was No.1 for me for four weeks. I know it didn't reinvent the wheel but I liked the more modern production touches and I was just in love with it, and very quickly became a huge fan of theirs despite not really caring that much for Whole Again weirdly. I think Eternal Flame will always be one of those timeless melodies for me. Interestingly, on some early pressings of the re-released album there was a , and with just Natasha on vocals. But I liked what they did with the single mix. Drops Of Jupiter is my second favourite of the group, a great first hit for Train, and I like that they had this one-off hit many years before their others. A classic ballad that I'm glad made the top ten. Not sure Bootylicious feels as culturally significant as Say My Name or Survivor (by far their two biggest hits on Spotify). All three are pretty iconic singles though, and obviously this used the Stevie Nicks sample so well. I had a listen to Revolution (In The Summertime) and it was quite pleasant to me. I was listening out for the sample that Jaimeson also used and realised I couldn't hear it...and then I read Jade's post properly and listened to Crazy Town instead... ...and I really remember that song quite well, it's quite a repressed memory as I'm sure when I hear Complete I never think back to this Crazy Town song! I'd forgotten all about Stone by Stone, but it has quite an anthemic chorus. I guess the world had long moved on from Catatonia at this point though sadly. The Janet Jackson track is very pleasant, a lovely breezy radio single that I was surprised at the time missed the top ten. I agree the Geri song was definitely a surprise flop. I had no reason at the time to believe it wouldn't go to No.1 for her (especially as it was a very quiet week and she was nonetheless the highest new entry), and I remember being extremely shocked when it went in at No.8, although it's not a favourite of mine. It kind of sounds like it should have been on the soundtrack to an Austin Powers film. I'm not sure it really belonged in 2001 soundwise though and the production lacked oomph so maybe that's where she went wrong. I thought I didn't know Somebody but just listened and I do remember it, a very average dance track outside of the sample with quite a poor chorus vocal where he sounds like he's singing lower than feels natural for him and therefore sounds a bit mumbled. What a waste. All Or Nothing is basically a Westlife song isn't it. They even covered it on one of their albums a few years later and barely changed the production. I wasn't too surprised therefore that it was a big hit for O-Town and showed up in X Factor 'you've made it to the next round!' montages for years to come. Fire Wire has a curious vocal - 'fire.....wire?' - that I remember more than anything else going on in the track. No (positive) comment on Tweenies after I liked Best Friends Forever. I really got nothing out of this one. I did like the R.E.M. song though, I thought it was quite a strong era from them, and I listen to this song a fair bit still today.
August 11, 2024Aug 11 Week 30 Sail Away (another great track from David and the video is fitting too which I didnt see until a few months back) > Elevation (tomb raider remix is the one I know and superior to the one in your playlist hehe) > Boss Of Me (oh yeah this from Malcolm In The Middle, didn't watch it much but it was good theme) > Tu Amor (this one I didn't know from her unlike the first two, not as good but still cute) > Soul Sound > Dance For Me > Meet Her At The Love Parade > Loaded (agree that 'She Bangs' does it better but still quite fun nonetheless) > Devil's Nightmare > Loverboy (not like me to put Mariah last but this wasn't doing much sadly)
August 11, 2024Aug 11 Author I love the top half of this group but the magical “Destiny” has to come top. 9 Zero 7 Destiny Only Top 40 for this duo featuring young Sia: the production is like a big warm hug and it's such a tender and beautiful song 8 So Solid Crew 21 Seconds 905th #1: influential debut hit for this big Battersea collective and an exciting track with a unique and diverse energy 8 Bjork Hidden Place Her highest peaking post 2000 hit: a wonderful track with an incredible intimacy, like she's sharing her darkest secret 7 Jennifer Lopez Ain't It Funny A straightforward pop song but an excellent one with a lovely flow to the melody and an effective Latin American flavour 7 Radiohead Knives Out Judging this as a single it's not an essential Radiohead release but it's still a marvellous track with a great build up of tension 6 Missy 'Misdemeanor' Elliott Featuring Ludacris One Minute Man The follow up to "Get Ur Freak On" doesn't have the impact of that, but is a strong and sultry RnB track and gently hypnotic 5 Cygnus X Superstring Only Top 40 for this German trance group thanks to a Rank 1 remix and you can hear "Airwave" similarities: a decent track 4 Honeyz I Don't Know Last one for them: a rather sweet tune and certainly better than their previous, but not a huge amount to it and not a big hit 4 Tall Paul Vs INXS Precious Heart - Tall Paul/Riva/Lush/Marc O'Tool Mixes A hit for DJ Paul Newman with a remix of "Never Tear Is Apart" by INXS: works quite well but I'd rather hear the original 3 M.O.P. Featuring Busta Rhymes Ante Up 2nd and final hit for them with Busta's help: not too bad but with that yelling rap style happily left in the early 00s again 2 Raven Maize The Real Life Same DJ as Joey Negro: this samples "Bohemian Rhapsody" and Simple Minds "Theme From Great Cities" and is quite bizarre U_OKigBRqBI 2001 Weeks 34 and 35: #874 25/08/2001 Five Let's Dance 1 {1}-1-2-5-9-17-21-26-33-47-65-75->12 #875 25/08/2001 Sophie Ellis-Bextor Take Me Home - Mutiny/Graeme Park And Paul Birchall Mixes 2 {2}-3-8-9-14-19-32-35-46-50-51-65->12 #876 25/08/2001 Eve Featuring Gwen Stefani Let Me Blow Ya Mind 4 {4}-5-7-7-11-15-20-24-30-38-44-60->12 #877 25/08/2001 Jamiroquai Little L 5 {5}-7-10-19-28-34-44-57-60-54-61->11 #878 25/08/2001 New Order Crystal 8 {8}-26-51-66->4 #879 25/08/2001 Groove Armada Superstylin' 12 {12}-16-28-41-56-75-67R(2)->7 #880 25/08/2001 Shade Sheist/Nate Dogg/Kurupt Where I Wanna Be 14 {14}-19-30-42-62-69-58R(2)->7 #881 25/08/2001 De Nada Love You Anyway 15 {15}-23-34-50->4 #882 25/08/2001 Tymes 4 Bodyrock 23 {23}-34-54->3 #883 25/08/2001 Anastacia Made For Lovin' You 27 {27}-42-63->3 #884 25/08/2001 Supersister Shopping 36 {36}-56->2 #885 25/08/2001 Manchild Nothing Without Me 40 {40}->1 #886 01/09/2001 Nelly Furtado Turn Off The Light 4 {4}-9-12-15-20-26-31-44-60-67->10 #887 01/09/2001 Kosheen Hide U 6 {6}-13-22-31-47-66-55R(3)->7 #888 01/09/2001 Little Trees Help I'm A Fish 11 {11}-14-20-27-37-51-66->7 #889 01/09/2001 Embrace Wonder 14 {14}-37-63-59R(4)->4 #890 01/09/2001 Muse Bliss 22 {22}-52->2 #891 01/09/2001 Dante Thomas Featuring Pras Miss California 25 {25}-46-68->3 #892 01/09/2001 Slusnik Luna Sun 40 {40}-64->2
August 11, 2024Aug 11 I really like the unremixed radio edit of Tall Paul vs INXS - 'Precious Heart' it sounds very modern deep tech house, like Camelphat. The 'Real Life' is also a sensible dance track that could be from now. Cygnus X - Superstring Rank 1 remix is some good atmospheric trance. Perfect Gentleman is very good and I remember it from the time. '21 Seconds' is good, an uncommercial sounding #1. Edited August 18, 2024Aug 18 by TheSnake
August 12, 2024Aug 12 Destiny is my clear favourite too, and was a No.1 in my chart, and a song I still regularly listen to. Sia and Sophie Barker sound so beautiful on this record and it really whisks me right back to a carefree, very hot summer. , it's an absolute crime that this only peaked at No.30. I agree with second place too, we actually had So Solid Crew perform this track at my school a few weeks before release, and looking back that's kind of crazy. I remember they were already being talked about and pulled up in a big van with blacked out windows. And were pretty electric to watch, even in that setting. Quite a controversial act for the stuffy teachers we had to have signed off on to appear. I love the concept of them each getting 21 seconds on the mic. Superstring is a good dance track, and I liked the original Ain't It Funny far more than the 'remix' that bore no resemblance to it other than the title. I think One Minute Man was a good follow up for Missy, a very infectious chorus. Ante Up I didn't mind either, the sample is good, but I also don't enjoy the shouty rap. I Don't Know is a bit of a miss for me. It's a pleasant radio strummer and better than the last single, but for me they opened with five excellent singles (all top tens) and then never came close to that level again. Wasn't a big fan of The Real Life or Precious Heart, or really any of the MANY samples/mixes of 80s songs that seemed to be everywhere in 2001. I didn't think I remembered Hidden Place but just listened to it and I do, it's a very hypnotic piece. A really strong single with fantastic production. I had to check Knives Out too and I do remember that upon listening as well. Good track but not as standout as Pyramid Song. Edited August 12, 2024Aug 12 by gooddelta
August 12, 2024Aug 12 'Destiny' is my favourite of this batch as well  what a gorgeous, ambient single with a peak that feels way too low indeed, aw. 'Hidden Place' and 'Knives Out' would fill out the rest of my top 3, both pretty reliable acts.
August 13, 2024Aug 13 got behind a bit here. Week 32: Cosmic Rough Riders I generally liked, Mark & Lard used to play them a lot is my memory, and Revolution is a strong 9, I liked the retro vibes too. Drops Of Jupiter had a long chart run for me as I started on a Florida holiday and it fell out after it's subsequent UK chart run, so a 9/10 at the time. I still get a flashback to driving down a particular stretch of road which is just north of the new Epic Universe theme park which is under construction as I speak  Oddly, I MUCH prefer most of Train's subsequent output from Hey Soul Sister onwards and peaking with chart-topper AM Gold in 2022! In comparison, Jupiter is more of a 7/10 these days for me. Bootylicious is great, 9/10 no problem. Saw Turin Brakes a year or 2 back, still fabulous, Mind Over Money was a good 7/10. Picotto and Cosmic gate passed me by, I Feel Loved was a very good 8/10 for Depeche Mode, All The Way To Reno I think I bought, 8/10 for R.E.M. still on a roll. Catatonia's Stone isn;t one I recall, but really liked, a good run and top 10, so 9/10. I need a reminder play of it. And I'm going to have to differ with everyone on janet Jackson's Someone To call My Lover, I think it's her best record, a 10/10 chart-topper, loved the classical sample and even more loved the America "Ventura Highway" acoustic guitar sample from 1972 and didn't mind the added-crackle vinyl-referencing on the audio either. Her main problem was cancelling her UK tour after 9/11 which certainly pissed off this fan lined up to see her - never heard of rescheduling, Janet? Come by ship? Anyway it hit her popularity, assuming that wasn't the real reason she cancelled already. Tweenis 1/10, Gypsymen 5/10. Geri's Scream was a 7/10, Crazy Town fluttered and spun by unnoticed, but Just In Case grabbed a 7/10 too. Shortie was shown the sortie, but I approve of any First Choice sampling. All Or Nothing nearly got that nothing but it snook in for a week at 75, so 3/10, and that leaves Atomic Kitten. Also a 3/10. The Bangles Eternal Flame topped the UK charts as I was grieving for my grandma, and her funeral, so this pedestrian cover was not appreciated by me at all. Still isn't, sorry!
August 13, 2024Aug 13 Zero 7, a 9/10 easy. Got given the album a few years back, I must get round to playing it. So Solid Crew a 2/10 and a pet hate of mine under the trades description act. It promised 21 seconds to go and didn't specify they meant 21 seconds for each member in the title. 21 actual seconds would have been ground-breaking and hilarious! Bjork's Hidden Place (presumably the Icelandic fayries in the Eurovision Fire Saga movie) peaked out briefly for one week, but long past her best period for me, 3/10. J-Lo's Ain;t It Funny latin pop delight is a def 9/10, Radiohead the usual knives out from me and a chart none-show. One Minute Man was good Missy, 8/10, Tall Paul's INXS revamp a 7/10, and The Real Life instantly charmed me, went top 10, and then plummeted out in 4 weeks, which is highly unusual for me - so I expect I went "ooh that's interesting!" "Hang on I overrated that a bit" and then "getting on my nerves now!" in the space of a month. So, it has to be a 6/10 I think.
August 13, 2024Aug 13 Glad someone liked the Tall Paul INXS remix and Raven Maize song - both very sensible and modern Beatport sounding dance as I said. Edited August 13, 2024Aug 13 by TheSnake
August 13, 2024Aug 13 I forgot to comment on the batch before that - Fire Wire is a great unpoppy hard trance song and Drops of Jupiter is easily the best Train song for me, and is one of my favourite soft rock songs ever.
August 14, 2024Aug 14 Glad someone liked the Tall Paul INXS remix and Raven Maize song - both very sensible and modern Beatport sounding dance as I said. I liked both enough to buy them on single back then! Haven't heard the Tall Paul one in quite a while but I still spin Raven Maize fairly freuently.
August 15, 2024Aug 15 Author A big group here with plenty of strong tracks, but it’s New Order’s spectacular comeback that takes the top spot. 9 New Order Crystal Their first original single in 8 years and a delightfully gritty number with big production that is said to have inspired The Killers 8 Nelly Furtado Turn Off The Light This stands out as one of the quirkiest pop songs of the decade: I love the scatting and folk vibe to it and the vulnerable lyrics 8 Jamiroquai Little L The lead single from "A Funk Odyssey" and it's a funk masterclass: an effortless yet compelling track beautifully performed 8 Eve Featuring Gwen Stefani Let Me Blow Ya Mind A very successful duet addressed to Eve's critics with a memorable riff, a slow punchy chorus and well crafted hip hop verses 7 Kosheen Hide U Originally missed the Top 40 but this remix with the rhythmic pulsing production creates a captivating hit for the UK group 7 Muse Bliss The least brilliant of their 6 hits to date but still great, with the familiar shimmering piano and hard hitting long vocal phrases 7 Five Let's Dance 906th #1: the rapped parts work well, the autotune gives it a slightly robotic house feel and overall it's a strong funky track 6 Manchild Nothing Without Me Only Top 40 for this DJ act and it seems a very forgotten house hit, but I really enjoy the scraping violins and distorted vocal 6 Sophie Ellis-Bextor Take Me Home - Mutiny/Graeme Park And Paul Birchall Mixes Her debut solo hit: she sounds great on it and it's a really warm and comforting track but which lacks a really strong hook 6 Anastacia Made For Lovin' You Used in a Honda advert, this is my 2nd favourite of the 4 "Not That Kind" singles and a well performed soulful pop number 5 Slusnik Luna Sun Only hit for this Finnish DJ duo: I don't need the full 10 minutes but where the sun's rays break through it's very effective 5 Groove Armada Superstylin' Highest peak to date for this UK electronic duo with a reggae house style number: it's very decent but not that memorable 5 De Nada Love You Anyway Debut single for this UK garage group; I like the juxtaposition between the sung melody and the rap; quite an enjoyable track 4 Shade Sheist/Nate Dogg/Kurupt Where I Wanna Be Only hit for this US rapper: a fairly pleasant laid back track about smoking in the sunshine, but it feels rather inconsequential 4 Embrace Wonder Lead single from their 3rd album "If You've Never Been": it's sweet and heartfelt but also a little plodding and predictable 3 Little Trees Help I'm A Fish Only hit for this Danish girl group for an animated film of the same name: cute and catchy but doesn't bear too many listens 3 Dante Thomas Featuring Pras Miss California Only hit for this US RnB singer: it's quite a catchy melody but for me delivered in a rather formulaic and uninspiring way 2 Tymes 4 Bodyrock Another UK garage pop girl group: think they're better than the material as the lyrics are full of clichés but it's well performed 2 Supersister Shopping Their 2nd and last Top 40 hit: it's hard to pin down why I love "Coffee" but find this similar 80s pop style effort rather naff KVMyXDsadLQ 2001 Week 36: #893 08/09/2001 Blue Too Close 1 {1}-3-7-12-17-23-26-37-42-57-64-53-68->13 #894 08/09/2001 Uncle Kracker Follow Me 3 {3}-4-6-8-11-11-12-14-16-22-23-25-37-48-60-75-68-67->18 #895 08/09/2001 Louise Stuck In The Middle 4 {4}-10-10-16-22-28-35-43-72->9 #896 08/09/2001 Emma Bunton Take My Breath Away 5 {5}-14-25-38-48-51-48-45-56->9 #897 08/09/2001 The Charlatans Love Is The Key 16 {16}-44-68->3 #898 08/09/2001 DJ Luck And MC Neat Featuring Ari Gold I'm All About You 18 {18}-35-45-72-71R(3)->5 #899 08/09/2001 3LW Playas Gon' Play 21 {21}-40-53->3 #900 08/09/2001 Weekend Players 21st Century 22 {22}-37-46-65->4 #901 08/09/2001 Lifehouse Hanging By A Moment 25 {25}-36-42-74->4 #902 08/09/2001 Foxy Brown Oh Yeah 27 {27}-47-66->3 #903 08/09/2001 American Hi-Fi Flavor Of The Weak 31 {31}-39-47->3 #904 08/09/2001 112 Peaches And Cream 32 {32}-51-75->3 #905 08/09/2001 Freefall Featuring Jan Johnston Skydive (I Feel Wonderful) 35 {35}-61->2 #906 08/09/2001 Lowgold Beauty Dies Young {2001} 40 {40}->1
