May 23, 20241 yr Kernkraft is an immortal classic  I'm Outta Love is the Heart FM national anthem. I love Minority, one of their best pre-AI singles.
May 23, 20241 yr For me "Against All Odds" is the best and "Kernkraft 400" is the worst song from the last package.
May 23, 20241 yr The Mariah and Westlife team-up is indeed as overblown as you'd expect from them coming together, a travesty that it blocked 'Kernkraft 400' from #1 for not one but two weeks :( the latter is my top pick from this batch too and probably my favourite #2 hit of the year, love that distinctive melody and the thumping electronic production  That 'You Used To Hold Me' cover sounds really familiar (likely due to Kisstory) but have never placed an artist name to it until now!
May 23, 20241 yr Zombie Nation got a modest 3 from me, clearly still not into dance music as a whole. Anastacia was being karaoke'd in gay bars for some years after with I'm Outta Love (some singing it pretty good!) and a monster track of the year 9/10. Most Girls was a decent 8/10 in my charts, but not amongst my top Pink tracks from the early days, but not long to go before she gets the party started. Breakout is a decent Foo Fighters track, 7/10, not heard it since it charted though. Billie Piper's ditto, but an 8/10, much preferred this era to the early stuff. Unleash The Dragon is one that sticks more in my memory than some of this period, and I rather liked it 8/10. Mariah, what can I say - someone at the record company thought, hey Westlife get loads of UK number ones, bout time Mariah grabbed another chart-topper with a bunch of drivel. It's worse than most Mariah Carey tracks and worse than most Westlife tracks (and both have had good stuff, in the case of Mariah a handful of genuine classics too). 1/10. It is memorable though....
May 23, 20241 yr Author Some more excellent electronica here: of course the highest new entry of the week is from a recent Apprentice star! That may be the catchiest record of the week but there are a few others I prefer. 8 Roni Size And Reprazent Who Told You Highest peaking hit for this UK drum and bass duo: a very striking and delightfully manic track with relentless offbeat rhythms 8 Sister Bliss Sister Sister A minor hit for this DJ who was in Faithless: it's great and I really enjoy the echoey strings and the distorted inaudible vocals 7 Monsta Boy Featuring Denzie Sorry (I Didn't Know) Only hit for this UK garage duo to be covered by Joel Corry: the vocals are slightly scratchy but it's a really great heartfelt track 7 Placebo Slave To The Wage Musically this is less unusual than "Taste In Men" but still sounds great, and the lyrics about the rat race are very well written 6 Architechs Featuring Nana Body Groove 1st of 2 hits for this brotherly garage duo: I really like the plucked string riff and it's a very clever, catchy and smile inducing track 6 SuReal You Take My Breath Away Only hit with this credit but it's the DJ also know as Lange: one of those nice ethereal trance tracks with a soaring female vocal 5 Orion Eternity Only hit for this Finnish DJ: quite a chilled out trance track with some gentle strings and slightly cheesy whispering, but enjoyable 5 DJ Luck And MC Neat Featuring JJ Ain't No Stoppin' Us Their 3rd Top 10 before the diminishing returns kick in: tamer and less remarkable than the others but with a nice sound world 4 Iceberg Slimm Nursery Rhymes Only Top 40 for this UK rapper in the Jay-Z style with a children's chorus: quite catchy but his rapping style is a bit over the top 3 The Beautiful South Closer Than Most Lead single from their 7th album: their themes are always interesting but musically I find this a pedestrian version of their style 2 Melanie B Tell Me Her 2nd solo hit: this doesn't do much for me as there's no subtlety and it's angry throughout with no real melody or shaping tI8bbh7c-l8 2000 Week 41: #421 14/10/2000 All Saints Black Coffee 1 {1}-3-7-9-22-33-37-43-40-43-41-52-47-51-66-73-71R(4)-69R(2)->18 #422 14/10/2000 Delerium Featuring Sarah McLachlan Silence (Remixes) 3 {3}-4-6-7-11-13-21-28-31-37-44-45-41-47-59-62->16 #423 14/10/2000 Texas In Demand 6 {6}-15-23-33-38-44-58-64-62R(6)-64->10 #424 14/10/2000 Whitney Houston And Enrique Iglesias Could I Have This Kiss Forever 7 {7}-9-11-16-21-28-42-63->8 #425 14/10/2000 Eminem The Way I Am 8 {8}-13-16-18-24-35-38-44-59->9 #426 14/10/2000 Stephen Gately I Believe 11 {11}-30-46-57->4 #427 14/10/2000 Baha Men Who Let The Dogs Out? 2 13-14-{2}-4-2-3-3-4-6-6-5-5-5-7-18-23-30-40-45-46-55-59-68->23 #428 14/10/2000 Supersister Coffee 16 {16}-29-41-54-74->5 #429 14/10/2000 Vengaboys Cheekah Bow Bow (That Computer Song) 19 {19}-32-43-51-60->5 #430 14/10/2000 Rolf Harris Fine Day 24 {24}-39-57->3 #431 14/10/2000 Everclear Wonderful 36 {36}-57->2
May 24, 20241 yr 'Sorry (I Didn't Know)' is probably my favourite from that batch. However, the version I'm most familiar with is the David Howard remix as that was the one Kisstory went for. I found this version particularly striking, so was quite disappointed when the less interesting Joel Corry cover came along and out-peaked it :P I do agree that 'Body Groove' is the catchiest of the week though... it's going to be stuck in my head for the rest of the day now
May 24, 20241 yr Kernkraft 400 <3 I love that the band was called Zombie Nation, but the song said that throughout. Much confusion caused at the time about what the name of the song was and what the name of the band was, but what a great dance track. Shame it was stopped by Mariah and Westlife for two weeks but I confess, I always liked that too, sorry! I'm Outta Love is such an emphatic debut, and still heard ALL the time to this day. I actually like Minority a lot, I remember the song (and Warning as well as Green Day's 90s hits) being very popular at my school at the time. Most Girls is good enough, I agree P!nk really amped up on her second album though, there's nothing I love from her early few hits. I think Billie Piper was running on fumes a bit here, Something Deep Inside was produced well but it's quite a standard track and clearly her heart wasn't in releasing this sort of music at the time from what she says these days. Some solid dance hits in the second batch. Interesting that Sorry (I Didn't Know) went on to be so big for Joel Corry. And Who Told You is a very memorable song too. Body Groove is a garage classic, very infectious track indeed. I wish the radio edit was on Spotify. I didn't really care much for DJ Luck and MC Neat by this point, this song is much worse than the two before it for me. Closer Than Most was a bit of an underwhelming lead from The Beautiful South, I do remember it but not fondly particularly. Perfect 10 had been such a strong lead a couple of years earlier. I just didn't like Melanie B's solo material much at all unfortunately, I would definitely rank the solo output: Melanie C > Emma Bunton > Geri Halliwell > Victoria Beckham > Melanie B. I know Victoria's singles were nothing impressive outside Out Of Your Mind, but I at least find them a pleasant background listen, whereas I just want to turn off all of Melanie B's stuff apart from maybe Lullaby.
May 24, 20241 yr Author ^ I’d swap Victoria and Geri in your solo Spice ranking but otherwise agree! I low key enjoy several of Victoria’s hits. I guess you could say Victoria and Emma both peaked too late to hit the sweet spot for chart success.
May 24, 20241 yr 'Minority' made my top 10 of the year, Green Day gradually moving into wider sociopolitical themes. 'Kernkraft 400' is also great. An unorthodox run of songs from #427 to #430 in the next batch - I have no recollection of the last of those whatsoever
May 24, 20241 yr well this a bunch of "i've never heard of them in my life's" - maybe I was away that week and missed the chart show. Architects got a 5 from me and I do actually remember it, hooray! DJ Luck & mate were usually pet peeves, but I gave this one a very generous 3. Don't remember it though. Closer Than Most gives the Beautiful South gets a 7, but I don't remember it as well as Body Groove (ie, at all). Best of all is the lowest-rated here : Mel B's gets a firm 8 from me and tops the list. This all proves of course that as you get older your memory gets worse for more recent events/records than it does when you are young - those stay with you forever, more than as you get older. I've worked out it takes about 4 or 5 years to stay fresh-ish in the memory, then they fade as the body rebuilds itself periodically from scratch but forgets about recently-used braincells - or else it erases them to use again! (* Not proven by science). Rambling there as charting 4 out of the 11 is really low!! Post-note: just checked my chart of that week and I think I'd been in Florida, judging by all the American hits: 1 THEME FROM SHAFT Isaac Hayes 2 KIDS Robbie Williams/ Kylie Minogue 3 SKY Sonique 4 SAD EYES Enrique Iglesias 5 WONDERFUL Everclear 6 BENT Matchbox 20 7 BE THANKFUL FOR WHAT YOU'VE GOT William De Vaughan 8 (YOU MAKE ME FEEL LIKE) A NATURAL WOMAN Carole KIng 9 TOO SICK TO PRAY Alabama Three 10 OVERLOAD Sugababes 11 BE WITH YOU Enrique Iglesias 12 BEAUTIFUL DAY U2 13 IT'S GONNA BE ME N'Sync 14 I'M OUTTA LOVE Anastacia 15 MUSIC Madonna 16 WHY DOES MY HEART FEEL SO BAD Moby 17 BLACK COFFEE All Saints 18 SOMETHING DEEP INSIDE Billie Piper 19 ON A NIGHT LIKE THIS Kylie Minogue 20 IN DEMAND Texas 21 KRYPTONITE Three Doors Down 22 MOST GIRLS Pink 23 C'MON PEOPLE (WE'RE MAKING IT NOW) Richard Ashcroft 24 A MAN WITHOUT LOVE Engelbert Humperdinck 25 SHE BANGS Ricky Martin 26 LUCKY Britney Spears 27 MUSCLE MUSEUM Muse 28 TAKE ON ME A1 29 TELL ME Melanie B 30 GROOVEJET (IF THIS AIN'T LOVE) Spiller 31 GIVING UP Hairy Diamond 32 DOESN'T REALLY MATTER Janet Jackson 33 TAKING YOU HOME Don Henley 34 WIFEY Next 35 OCTOBER SWIMMER JJ72 36 CLOSER THAN MOST Beautiful South 37 SPIRITUALIZED Finlay Quaye 38 I TURN TO YOU Melanie C 39 COUNTRY GRAMMAR Nelly 40 THAT'S THE WAY Jo Dee Messina
May 24, 20241 yr 2000 weeks 35 and 36: Madonna – Music Underworld - Cowgirl – sounding fantastic this. Element Four Big Brother UK TV Theme – iconic tune of course. Robbie Rivera Presents Rhythm Bangers Bang – irrestistably catchy. Agnelli And Nelson - Hudson Street – very good trance tune The Bloodhound Gang - The Ballad Of Chasey Lain – only came across whilst learning on guitar about 9 years ago. Funny track that seems inspired by the American Pie films lol. It is a steep down from the classic 'Bad Touch' though. Baby D - Let Me Be Your Fantasy (Remix) – not bad but give me the actual classic anyday which I was playing at my mates house last week and sounded as majestic as per. Tru Faith And Dub Conspiracy - Freak Like Me Kid Rock - American Bad Ass – I do like this myself and was used in some wrestling stuff but I do get the downside too. Yomanda - On The Level Glamma Kid - Bills 2 Pay – Sean Paul is that you? Enjoyable though for what it is and the sample is used decently. Lil' Kim - No Matter What They Say Bon Jovi - Say It Isn't So – yeah not a highlight from them this. Toploader - Just Hold On A1 - Take On Me – not gonna be super harsh on this as I probably was into it as an 8 year old then haha but now listening to it erm... it really is rather naff oops. Did like that video and still do though. Madasun - Feel Good Lolly - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun En-Core Featuring Stephen Emmanuel And Eska - Coochy Coo Daphne And Celeste - School's Out – seriously what was the point lmao.
May 25, 20241 yr Author A really strong week overall: it’s very close between the Top 2 but “Silence” just edges it. The full 8.5 minute version of the Airscape remix is totally worth it and I don’t think I know a more emotionally powerful trance record. 9 Delerium Featuring Sarah McLachlan Silence (Remixes) A sublime and euphoric remixed trance track: this builds to a huge outpouring of emotion with the beautifully expressive vocals 9 All Saints Black Coffee 876th #1: like "Pure Shores" this has William Orbit production, and it's a very special, beautifully tender and dreamy track 8 Supersister Coffee The 2nd great coffee related song of the week: a bit of a camp classic and an excellent pop song that should have been bigger 7 Everclear Wonderful Highest peak for this US rock band: a catchy charming song about pretending everything's OK as parents are getting divorced 7 Eminem The Way I Am It's quite self absorbed lyrically and a rather aggressive track, but musically it's very strong with excellent gritty production 6 Rolf Harris Fine Day This is good light hearted fun: I enjoy the scat style verses, the folky instruments, the barn dance feel and the jolliness of it 6 Texas In Demand The lead from their greatest hits album: it's a really nice heartfelt pop song; maybe a little too similar to "Say What You Want" 5 Stephen Gately I Believe His 2nd solo single that missed the Top 10: I prefer it to the lead though and it's a sweet song and charming performance 4 Baha Men Who Let The Dogs Out? One of the biggest selling non #1s of the decade for this Bahamian group: a bit silly for my taste but a quirky and inventive song 4 Vengaboys Cheekah Bow Bow (That Computer Song) An intriguing but slightly creepy song: the 1st verse turns computer terms into innuendo and the 2nd is about getting STDs 3 Whitney Houston And Enrique Iglesias Could I Have This Kiss Forever Only Enrique's 2nd Top 40: this collaboration isn't too bad but it plods somewhat, is oversung and lacks a compelling melody oTLJjoW867g v0Xej6Sz5nU 2000 Week 42: #432 21/10/2000 U2 Beautiful Day 1 {1}-3-14-25-38-44-50-62-65-74-73-58-43-52-58-73->16 #433 21/10/2000 Robbie Williams And Kylie Minogue Kids 2 {2}-4-6-16-21-30-38-33-35-37-44-44-50-61-71-73R(2)-66R(2)-74-66->19 #434 21/10/2000 Azzido Da Bass Dooms Night {2000 Re-Release} 8 {8}-15-23-34-43-65-68-72-70R(5)->9 #435 21/10/2000 Madison Avenue Who The Hell Are You? 10 {10}-21-26-43-52->5 #436 21/10/2000 R. May 25, 20241 yr For 'Silence' it has to be the Airscape remix for me, Tiesto's is still good but I am just used to the Airscape remix more. Sublime. 'Black Coffee' is a lovely song. I like the Whitney and George duet, my mum used to play the song a lot as she had it on one of her CD's.
May 26, 20241 yr Silence is a 10 for me - the single mix was also fabulous but my niece had the Tiesto remix at her 40th disco and it was spine-tingling (and I charted it last year). Black Coffee is a perfectly lovely 9/10 - and it's not even as good as Shaznay's current single Good Mourning - that's a 10! Everclear is also a post-holiday fab 9/10 from me. Way better batch than the last one! The Way I Am - surely that should be The Way I Yam What I Yam (1930's Popeye reference, topical)? Just a 3 from me sorry! I suppose the self-absorption was paving the way for the modern era of pop music, though. Fine Day was a fine 6/10 but it's no Sunarise. It's not even a Stairway To Heaven, but surprising to see Rolf spanning 5 charting decades! Texas had just had 8 number ones and a number 2 prior to this from me - and In Demand peaked at 20, so an 8/10 and a relative drop in quality for Sharleen & co. Baha Men plays and I'm driving the car around International Drive area of Orlando hearing it on heavy rotation. It's fun! (but not more fun than a 7/10). I was big on Enrique in 2000, he was huge in the States, bought the album and all, and the Whitney duet was a nice side-line to his terrific massive pop hits (and solo UK flops, the UK wasnt quite ready for him - yet) 9/10. The rest I didnt chart....
May 26, 20241 yr Definitely the correct top 2 this time, both are 10s for me. My favourite version of Silence has changed over the years, I liked the Airscape mix until I overplayed it, then I heard the Fade mix when I was more into progressive dance, then the Tiesto version - and lastly the original version which turns out is like a really lovely pure moods kind of track. I still enjoy all 4, the song just works so well in different forms.
May 26, 20241 yr Fine Day is definitely something I never needed to hear again, the comments on the YouTube video :drama: However, the 'wouldn't wanna worry what the weatherwoman told ya' hook has been reluctantly stuck in my head ever since it came out. Silence is my clear favourite here and my third favourite song of 2000, I much prefer the Airscape hit remix myself, absolute perfect trance. And I've said it a million times before and will continue to say it - Sarah McLachlan never got the attention she deserved in this country so at least she had this one moment in the sun. Black Coffee is wonderful. All Saints and William Orbit were a match made in heaven. Coffee I'm less enthusiastic about but I think it's quite cool that it went on to become a bit of a cult classic. In Demand is lovely, I think Texas unusually had two very strong single releases from their Greatest Hits (rather than the usual token average addition), which surely helped it to sell two million copies or whatever it was. The Eminem song isn't among his best for me really, not surprised it peaked in the lower top ten. I couldn't recall I Believe very well so had to check it again, it sounds like it's from a musical or a film soundtrack perhaps. (edit: duh, just looked it up and it was from Billy Elliot, of course, no wonder it had that sound then). Vengaboys had completely lost it by this point I think, I thought this sounded dated and tacky. But I did enjoy their final single, Forever As One, that was a lovely and underrated ballad. The real surprise about Could I Have This Kiss Forever is that it did better than If I Told You That, I don't see why or how it managed that, and with a lesser star collaboration too. Who Let The Dogs Out was never my cup of tea but it's quite lyrically funny looking back and I was always fascinated by its chart run - 13-14 and then a leap to 2 and all those weeks in the top ten, what happened there? Very unusual for 2000. It's never really licensed to compilations these days, I don't know if it's hard to license or if compilers are just trying to forget it ever happened. May 26, 20241 yr Author Who Let The Dogs Out was never my cup of tea but it's quite lyrically funny looking back and I was always fascinated by its chart run - 13-14 and then a leap to 2 and all those weeks in the top ten, what happened there? Very unusual for 2000. It's never really licensed to compilations these days, I don't know if it's hard to license or if compilers are just trying to forget it ever happened. I guess it treaded water in week 2 as the new release effect faded but interest was building. Then I think the 14-2 jump was slightly deceptive as it was on very low sales: interestingly it then had a big sales increase in week 4 but dropped 2-4 thanks to the competition. Then by the time it came back to #2 it was doing properly strong numbers.
May 27, 20241 yr Author I gave Muse’s first two hits an 8 and a 9 but this is the best yet - a proper whirlwind of a song. “Something In Your Eyes” is a really good discovery. 9 Muse Muscle Museum {2000} A re-release of an earlier miss: this feels like more archetypal Muse than their first couple and it's a fabulous throbbing track 8 Ed Case Something In Your Eyes 1st hit for this London DJ featuring Tin Tin Out vocalist Shelley Nelson, with an excellent and beautifully delivered garage track 7 U2 Beautiful Day 877th #1 and the lead from their 10th studio album: this has never quite excited me but it's a lovely, warm and joyous song 7 Warrior Warrior I can't find anything about this act and odd that the 1st hit is eponymous but it's a great club track with a strong tune and vocals 6 Azzido Da Bass Dooms Night {2000 Re-Release} Only Top 40 for this German DJ: I admire how different it is and enjoy it overall but the engine revving noise is an acquired taste 6 Erasure Freedom The lead from their 9th studio album: a sweet and uplifting number in their usual pop dance style but not new or remarkable 5 Robbie Williams And Kylie Minogue Kids A decent effort from this high profile duet: for some reason it's always left me a little cold; I think it just feels a bit lightweight 5 Atomic Kitten Follow Me Their last hit with Kerry: the low peak led to them temporarily being dropped but it's a good tune and their most grown up yet 4 Alice Deejay The Lonely One I prefer this to "Will I Ever" because it doesn't have the sugary sweetness but like that I don't feel this goes anywhere interesting 3 Madison Avenue Who The Hell Are You? One of those follow ups to a huge hit that's incredibly similar but somehow has none of the sparkle and seems a waste of time 2 R.
