June 20, 20241 yr The next Episode is great, Snoop Dogg always makes things better just by being on it to boot, and I under-estimated this at the time, a mere 7/10, but I'm bumping it up to 8 at least. Safri Duo I liked, 6/10, but it was never one of my top faves of the time. Genius Crew, Voodoo and BON went unnoticed by me, sorry! Oh No! Actually liked this one, 7/10 though I dont recall it at all, but Nate Dogg usually made me take notice of stuff. Sadly Dario G also passed me, I liked the Cranberries original though, though Paul Spencer would bring the brand back a few times for me, not least the fabulous Savour The Miracle Of Life as his last single earlier this year. Anastacia sometimes I was big on, sometimes less so, but she was always iconic on the gay scene at the time, especially with the ladies, karaoke fave. Not That Kind was a decent 6. Pop Ya Collar is one I still remember quite well for a track that peaked at 40 for me aka 7/10. Baha Men OTOH not so much but rated it 4/10. Martine I quite liked her cover, 7/10.
June 20, 20241 yr Tuesday's batch: 'All Hooked Up' is a weak follow-up single to the amazing 'Pure Shores' and 'Black Coffee' for me too unfortunately. Those are a high bar to match to be fair but I agree that this one has a flat chorus. This era is definitely all about the William Orbit produced songs for me, extending to album tracks too. Great to have Linkin Park in the chart now *.*
June 21, 20241 yr 'The Next Episode' is rightfully a classic of its genre although Safri Duo just about pips it to being my favourite of the latest section, that percussion is exhilarating
June 22, 20241 yr Weeks 1 to 3: Feeder - Buck Rogers – one of the best ever 00's rock songs for me. Loved it then and love it now. An absolute tune > Texas - Inner Smile – my fave Texas song. So feel good and the Elvis impersonating video is fab too. Also think the 'yeah yeah' bits are fine hehe. >Fragma Featuring Maria Rubia - Everytime You Need Me – sure a step down from 'Toca's Miracle' but still a big fan of this. > Creed - With Arms Wide Open > Jennifer Lopez - Love Don't Cost A Thing > Rui Da Silva Featuring Cassandra - Touch Me > Mis-Teeq - Why > Mauro Picotto - Komodo (Save A Soul) > Steps - It's The Way You Make Me Feel/Too Busy Thinking About My Baby – like 'Its The Way..' but not as crazy on the other one. > Fatboy Slim Featuring Macy Gray - Demons – really interesting collab this, sounding good > Red Hot Chili Peppers - Road Trippin – decent but not an essential standout for me by them > Santos - Camels > Lene Marlin - Where I'm Headed – another nice track from Lene although it's a blatant copy and paste 'Sitting Down Here' > David Morales Presents The Face Featuring Juliet Roberts - Needin' U II > Dusted - Always Remember To Respect And Honour Your Mother > Saint Etienne - Boy Is Crying >Everlast - Black Jesus. Mostly a pretty solid bunch here but don't care for the last two oop.
June 22, 20241 yr Author My self imposed rule of combining whenever there are fewer than 10 entries in a week leaves us with this rather marvellous group of 19, most of which are between good and brilliant and none of which are completely duff. I promise I’m not just trying to impress dandy* but I’d already decided “The Crystal Lake” would be coming right at the top. What a marvellous track with heartbreaking lyrics, and the background keyboard swooshing representing the shimmering lake. Next comes “Shining Light” which is utterly joyous and I’ve always loved. Then it’s “Whole Again” which might be my favourite basic ballad of its kind ever - something about the warm production and the bold simplicity of it I think hits the spot. And plenty of other great stuff too - I take the criticism of the vocal tone on “Teenage Dirtbag” but I still think it’s an excellent and very innovative pop song. 9 Grandaddy The Crystal Lake 1st of 2 Top 40s for this US band: a beautifully wistful psychedelic track that sounds different from anything else in the charts 9 Ash Shining Light The lead from the brilliant "Free All Angels"; an anthemic and timeless sounding track with fabulous poetic yet simple lyrics 9 Atomic Kitten Whole Again 890th #1, monster runner and million seller: it's musically an incredibly simple ballad yet somehow marvellous and unique 8 Wheatus Teenage Dirtbag Debut for this US group and the year end #5 despite missing #1: an incredibly musically clever and lyrically quirky one off hit 8 Planet Funk Chase The Sun Only big hit for this Italian electronic band whose melody is from an Ennio Morricone piece: a beautiful ethereal dance track 8 JJ72 Snow Their 3rd and highest peaking hit: like "Oxygen" this has a fabulous emotional build up and an great gritty vocal performance 7 Fun Lovin' Criminals Loco Last Top 40 for this US band despite being their highest peaking; has a well used sample and it's a lovely funky and chilled track 7 Mya Case Of The Ex Debut solo hit for this US singer after some features: a very inpressively dynamic, pumchy and character filled pop RnB song 7 Papa Roach Last Resort 1st hit for this already long standing US band: the suicidal theme is pitched just right in a strong and catchy hard rock track 6 Warp Brothers We Will Survive The spoken part on this is perhaps slightly too long but when the track explodes into the ferocious main theme it is exhilarating 6 Mansun Fool Last of their 14 Top 40s and nothing really new but another very good one: that voice is beautifully aching and angst ridden 6 Starsailor Fever Debut hit for this UK band: they'll have better to come but I do really like the intensity and gently unsettling quality to this 5 Amira My Desire (Remix 2) This has stalled outside the Top 40 and it's 3rd time lucky with a new remix: it's apretty tune over a well produced garage track 5 U2 Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of For me the lyrics to this are excellent but musically it's like it's stuck in a vertex of blandness, so it gets a middling score overall 5 Shaggy Featuring Rikrok It Wasn't Me {Import} 891st #1 and the year's top seller: it's not high art and grates after a few plays but a fun and commercially masterful concept 4 The Thrillseekers Featuring Sheryl Deane Synaesthesia (Fly Away) Only Top 40 under this name for the UK DJ based on a reworking of an instrumental: a decent but unremarkable club track 4 Dumdums Army Of Two Their last hit and more of the proto-Busted style fare: it's a perfectly decent and well performed song but doesn't stand out 3 Joe Featuring Mystikal Stutter A US #1 for this RnB singer: I quite like the way the track stutters in sympathy but find the whole package quite dreary overall 3 Alice Deejay Celebrate Our Love Their last hit: it's pleasant enough but quite sugary and similar to their other hits: not surprising that the success didn't continue W5DsI_eCK7Y EIcK30k6dwM 1V0xQkk9kbc 2001 Week 8: #599 24/02/2001 Jakatta American Dream 3 {3}-8-13-18-20-25-35-36-49-56-66-65-63-73R(2)->14 #600 24/02/2001 Dido Here With Me 4 {4}-7-10-15-15-20-29-31-33-43-56-72->12 24/02/2001 BBMak Back Here {2001} 5 {5}-13-19-27-39-49-61-67-59-70->10 #601 24/02/2001 Backstreet Boys The Call 8 {8}-16-28-41-60->5 #602 24/02/2001 Debelah Morgan Dance With Me 10 {10}-15-22-30-37-45-63-68-70->9 #603 24/02/2001 Nelly E.I. 11 {11}-23-32-42-63->5 #604 24/02/2001 Angelic Can't Keep Me Silent 12 {12}-33-46-67->4 #605 24/02/2001 Girls@Play Airhead 18 {18}-25-38-51-71->5 #606 24/02/2001 Vengaboys Forever As One 28 {28}-51->2 #607 24/02/2001 Jools Holland And Jamiroquai I'm In The Mood For Love 29 {29}-41-58->3 #608 24/02/2001 My Vitriol Always Your Way 31 {31}-59->2 #609 24/02/2001 The Orb Once More 38 {38}-72->2
June 23, 20241 yr Fell a bit behind due to my busy work week last week, will try and catch up - here are the first two batches! In the first batch of 2001 my clear favourites were Everytime You Need Me, which I rank very nearly as highly as Toca's Miracle myself, if not in the same regard - a beautifully constrcuted pop song made out of a trance record, and Inner Smile, which is a Texas classic. I saw a TikTok video of this yesterday that had gone viral with a guy saying he wishes it would blow up Murder on the Dancefloor style. You never know if it gets a sync deal. Touch Me is pure class, a great dance No.1, but in the same regard I hold the song it beat to the top - It's The Way You Make Me Feel, this I believe was a huge leap up from Stomp - it was their first real effort at Scandipop/Cheiron team influence following all those Pete Waterman singles or the Chic sample of Stomp. It felt way more modern than anything they'd put out before and the last minute is a sugar rush, especially with Claire's operatic ad lib towards the end, which is always great to see performed live. Others I listen to regularly are Komodo (Save A Soul), which uses that Sweet Lullaby sample really well, and Buck Rogers which is just awesome. Me and my sister used to love singing this as a call and response - he's got a brand new car (what's he got), he's got a Jaguar (what's inside), it's got leather seats, (any other features?), it's got a CD player player... Demons I agree isn't the sum of its parts, interesting gospel tones but a bit dreary, Lene was running out of ideas - nice song but heard it before, Needin' U I agree didn't need the vocal topline, and J.Lo is catchy and memorable but not a personal favourite. I'm surpised With Arms Wide Open wasn't bigger, a very strong song and like you say, a US No.1. Road Trippin' is pretty nice, quite a bit mellower than the other singles from Californication. The second batch isn't a strong week at all, the only one I bought was The Fields of Love by ATB and York, which is definitely more of the former than the latter, a nice dance record. Everything You Need I don't care for as much as the first two from Madison Avenue. They had another big hit in Australia that year too called Reminiscing which is worth checking out. My partner is obsessed with Spaced Invader for some reason, apparently she saw it on CD:UK and became addicted to it and has the single. I guess it has a charm to the vocal. Things I've Seen was great, and hinted at bigger things, I thought for a while they'd be the next Fugees but clearly that didn't happen. Rollin' is iconic in its own way, I was surprised when this got to No.1 myself though, I don't know that I'd expected that to happen after the relative failure of the previous single. One Step Closer should definitely have been the bigger nu-metal hit. Falling was a curious single to launch a new band with (Liberty were at least known from Popstars), I don't think it fully worked myself, a bit album track-y. Really don't like All Hooked Up, one of the worst All Saints singles for me. I remember though that I'd still expected it to go to No.1 or at least top three and was shocked when it landed at No.7. The only song I didn't recall at all was Pistol Whip, and I liked that one a lot, pulsating dance. And again, P!nk I wasn't into in her first era in any way, including this single.
June 23, 20241 yr Grandaddy as best of the week - correct choice! I thought you would like it, it was a prompt to me the other day when you listed it as I hadn’t heard it in ages
June 23, 20241 yr Grandaddy is a decent track, 5/10, didn't remember it though! Shining Light passed me by entirely as I started to go off Ash a bit. Atomic Kitten, a pop monster of the time but it was never more than a 7/10 for me and I always sing a naughty lyric version which drops the W from the title. Teenage Dirtbag, though, was fab: still regularly played and a 9/10 Record Of The Week here. Fun, quirky, a bit grungey, anthem for the Slacker generation that didnt get involved in anything much. Planet Funk a 5/10, s'OK, while Snow is an 8/10, I thought JJ72 would catch on more than they did. Tch. Always got time for Huey & Fun Lovin' Crminals, and Loco was a strong 8/10, very smooth and rather nice. Mya is another US radio track I recall, a big 9/10 for moi and second only to Wheatus here. Papa Roach were another one of the many US teen-appealing rock bands of the time that I didnt get by and large - but this grabbed a 7/10 from me, their only charted track. Warp Bros? Pass. Mansun? Obv I liked it, always liked Mansun, 7/10. Starsailor I also usually rated highly, But Fever is one I dont recall at the mo, 7/10 though. As was Amira's desire, also a 7/10. U2, classic, key band obviously, and back on form with Atomic Bomb - but Stuck could only get a 7/10 from me, not the best single from that period from the boys. It Wasn't Me was fun, a memorable 8/10, though I agree in small doses only, that year it got blanket saturation in the US and UK! Joe & Stutter I liked too, 7/10, the sort of track that sounded better cruising down an American highway, on the radio, which as I keep saying I did back then - twice in 2001 I think. Going again in October so that'll be a culture shock after 10 years away. I hear the name Alice Deejay, I think "I'm just going to get annoyed now", and I usually am. I say "usually". I mean "always" of course.
June 23, 20241 yr Teenage Dirtbag is one of those songs I instantly fell in love with when first hearing it. I’m aware some on this forum hold the complete opposite opinion from one of the earlier EOY survivors.
June 23, 20241 yr Author I don’t think any album has ever had as big an effect on me as “No Angel” which I was utterly obsessed with as a moody 16 year old and I still think is a great record. The first single from it is one of the very best tracks on the album and the winner of this group. There are really no weak track here at all, so 2001 is doing very well on its average score so far. 9 Dido Here With Me Her debut hit about waking up after a night with someone and wanting to save the moment: a simple but very powerful song 8 The Orb Once More Only Top 40 this century for this electronic act: as usual for them beautifully atmospheric with an ethereal feeling of mystery 8 Backstreet Boys The Call Possibly their best hit this century: melodically excellent with a well written story about infidelity and conflicting emotions 7 My Vitriol Always Your Way 1st of 2 Top 40s for this psychedelica influenced UK band: a well delivered heartfelt song backed by a pleasing wall of guitars 7 Jakatta American Dream Debut hit for this UK DJ in 6/4 time based on samples from the film "American Beauty": a lovely relaxing and absorbing track 6 Angelic Can't Keep Me Silent Another hit for the Judge Jules led outfit: another strong and uplifting trance track from them but a bit too similar to their debut 6 Girls@Play Airhead Yet another UK girl band with their debut hit: they won't be around long but this is a really fun song with a quirky lyrical theme 5 Jools Holland And Jamiroquai I'm In The Mood For Love Only hit for Jools performed on his show and released to mark Julie London's passing: a tasteful version of the jazz standard 5 Nelly E.I. A very similar in style single to "Country Grammer" but perhaps slightly less in your face: another decent and catchy effort 4 Vengaboys Forever As One Their last hit: this ballad has a very nice melody and is sung sweetly, but seems to abandon everything that made them famous 4 Debelah Morgan Dance With Me Only hit for this US singer with a reworking of "Hernando's Hideaway"; all done very nicely but hardly an essential composition PSu5nAQ7uZw 2001 Weeks 9 and 10: #610 03/03/2001 Outkast Ms Jackson 2 {2}-3-8-10-16-23-28-35-46-67->10 #611 03/03/2001 Samantha Mumba Always Come Back To Your Love 3 {3}-7-7-9-14-17-23-25-35-46-62-65-60-53-57->15 #612 03/03/2001 Melanie B Feels So Good 5 {5}-12-19-23-31-43-53-62->8 #613 03/03/2001 A1 No More 6 {6}-21-34-46-55-62-52-52-64R(3)-64-69-67-69->13 #614 03/03/2001 Dane Shut Up And Forget About It 9 {9}-17-26-41-64->5 #615 03/03/2001 Stuntmasterz The Ladyboy Is Mine 10 {10}-15-22-29-38-45-51-58-63->9 #616 03/03/2001 Marilyn Manson The Fight Song 24 {24}-51-70->3 #617 03/03/2001 Ja Rule Featuring Christina Milian Between Me And You 26 {26}-41-60->3 #618 03/03/2001 Mystikal Featuring Nivea Danger (Been So Long) 28 {28}-42-63->3 #619 03/03/2001 Semisonic Chemistry 35 {35}-55->2 #620 03/03/2001 King Adora Suffocate 39 {39}-63->2 10/03/2001 Shaggy Featuring Ricardo 'Rikrok' Ducent It Wasn't Me 1 {1}-2-3-2-2-2-2-5-8-10-13-15-22-24-32-39-49-58-73-70->20 #621 10/03/2001 Ricky Martin With Christina Aguilera Nobody Wants To Be Lonely 4 {4}-9-12-17-26-30-45-61-55-63-54-61->12 #622 10/03/2001 Nelly Furtado I'm Like A Bird 5 {5}-6-8-9-9-11-14-19-21-29-30-36-38-43-61-69->16 #623 10/03/2001 Manic Street Preachers So Why So Sad 8 {8}-25-40-54-69-65-60->7 #624 10/03/2001 Manic Street Preachers Found That Soul 9 {9}-35-57-68R(4)->4 #625 10/03/2001 Kaci Paradise 11 {11}-16-16-23-34-37-38-49-75->9 #626 10/03/2001 Mario Piu Presents DJ Arabesque The Vision 16 {16}-28-47-70-71R(3)->5 #627 10/03/2001 Human Nature He Don't Love You 18 {18}-36-52-71->4 #628 10/03/2001 Caprice Once Around The Sun 24 {24}-45->2 #629 10/03/2001 The Divine Comedy Love What You Do 26 {26}-57->2
June 24, 20241 yr Here With me was great, Dido too, big fan at the time. Also a 9/10 biggie. The Orb washed over me without registering, not unusual for them and me. The Call was a Backstreet 8/10, not amongst their greats, but still good. My Vitriol I don't remember, and the track had one week in my chart, so that'll make it a firm 3/10 then. Jakatta I remember OTOH, more for 2 2022 hits though, American dream not a fave. Jools Holland had a quirky retro JK-based 6/10 run for me, EI, EIO got Nelly a fairly decent 7/10, but I couldnt hum it, unlike the Jools Holland song, which I could. Debelah was one I'd picked up on in 2000 in Florida, so it was good to see it chart in 2001 in the UK, and of course I rated it - 9/10. I have always liked soul/rnb/insert current label here, what can I say!
June 24, 20241 yr 2001 week 6 and 7 batch: 'It Wasn't Me' is the best song Shaggy put out for me although RikRok's hook does a lot of the heavy lifting. The advice is questionable for sure but they don't seem to be taking themselves too seriously with the "it makes no sense at all" line amongst others  perhaps it helps that I was too young to recall the overplay at the time. I remember it popping up on the music channels a lot in my teens as part of 'best-selling hits of the noughties' type countdowns instead. 'Chase The Sun' love that timeless melody and the dreamy production/lyrics. I understand why 'Teenage Dirtbag' is polarising but I lean more towards the positive side too. Their 'A Little Respect' cover is far worse for me but more on that later :kink: I do love the story behind 'Whole Again', how the group were on the verge of being dropped but then this release reversed their fortunes as an unexpected #1, but I've always found it pretty overrated in terms of girl group classics. I'm not really keen on them in general though, as much as I love kittens, so would still say it's their best.
June 24, 20241 yr My thoughts on the two batches just before today's. I think Dario G was actually my favourite of that first batch, and the only one to reach No.1 in my personal chart, although Safri Duo ran it very close at No.2 at the time. I know Dream To Me is a cover, but I think it works very well as a dance record, always loved the vocal tracking being sung low and high simultaneously. Played-A-Live was so great too, amazing percussion. The Next Episode is a strong track from Dre and Snoop but must say I prefer Still DRE myself. Apart from that it's quite a mediocre group. I don't share the same affection for Boom Selection, was not one of the stronger garage tracks of the time for me. BON's Boys I always found very naff and cringey for some reason, On The Radio was a pointless cover from Martine, I didn't like You All Dat at all, and Not That Kind was just ok from Anastacia, the other singles from the album were all better for me. Pop Ya Collar is ok though from Usher, quite a catchy track I thought. My two personal chart toppers from the second group were Alice Deejay (I was obsessed with them but I acknowledge it's not their strongest track) and The Thrillseekers which is a very strong song imo. Such a beautifully warm trance record with a lovely chord progression that spent five weeks at No.1 on my chart, in two spells - firstly in late 2000 when I first heard it and then around this time when it was released as a single. I was disappointed when it stalled so low in the chart, it's a fairly well known classic among trance fans these days at least with 24 million streams on Spotify. This track is still in my top 100 of all-time. The only other single I bought from this lot was Chase The Sun, which is another great dance track. Whole Again was definitely one of the most surprising chart toppers ever to me when it happened. It's a strong but not extraordinary ballad, I rate it a solid 7/10 and always have done but I prefer so many of their other ballads, I guess this one was just the most accessible/hands in the air singalong, but I was still amazed it hit No.1 out of nowhere. Shining Light is a great track, I listen to this a lot and it deserved a lot more in the charts, really anthemic indeed. Teenage Dirtbag is not a favourite of mine but it's a classic nonetheless, that was everywhere at the time. Likewise Shaggy of course, which was never off the radio despite its risqué subject. A cheeky but fun No.1 which was absolutely gigantic. I hadn't heard The Crystal Lake before yesterday or don't remember it from the time, it's pretty nice indie. I did like My Desire, I'd forgotten all about that track but have it on a Pepsi Chart album somewhere at home. Snow and Fool were on the same album, I don't massively love either. Fever was another ok indie song, they definitely had better to come. Last Resort is a sweary classic, Case Of The Ex was a really strong R&B single and welcome solo hit for Mya - seeing as she usually succeeded with collaborations. I actually did like that U2 song quite a lot, was surprised it didn't go to No.1 at the time. I guess the chorus is quite slow and wordy. Army Of Two was another perfectly good but not amazing song from Dumdums, they really just never got out of third gear and it's a shame because I feel like they had the potential to on a second album, and their sound might have been more on trend by that point too. I actually quite like the Joe song, I thought the intro and stutter effect was really effective, and the sample was strong too. Edited June 24, 20241 yr by gooddelta
June 25, 20241 yr Girls@Play :cheeseblock: Fe-M@il who? love that Roxy Mitchell from EastEnders was in this group  'American Dream' has really crept up on me over the years and is my favourite from this batch  I get chills when it reaches the slower part. 'Once More' is a big highlight for me too so I'm certainly gravitating towards the mysterious electronic hits in this section. Dido would round off my top 3 though so nice top pick.
June 26, 2024Jun 26 Week 4: Linkin Park - One Step Closer – epic debut. Limp Bizkit - Rollin' – I know this get crapped on but for me it hits in the nostalgic feels and the video being famous for having the twin towers in it literal months before that infamous tragic day. Joshua Ryan - Pistol Whip – solid piece Spooks - Things I've Seen – can't say I recalled this one but it does sound great, the girl voice is great on it. Pink - You Make Me Sick ATB Featuring York - The Fields Of Love – nice laidback tune this sounds. All Saints - All Hooked Up Madison Avenue - Everything You Need Boom! - Falling Hatiras Featuring Slarta John - Spaced Invader EBTG Vs Soul Vision - Tracey In My Room Week 5: two great dance tunes here. The Cranberries cover does work for me here in dance form similarly to 'Ordinary World' did. Safri Duo - Played-A-Live (The Bongo Song) Dario G - Dream To Me Dr Dre Featuring Snoop Dogg - The Next Episode Anastacia - Not That Kind Genius Cru - Boom Selection Voodoo And Serano - Blood Is Pumpin' Martine McCutcheon - On The Radio Baha Men With Imani Coppola - You All Dat Usher - Pop Ya Collar Mos Def And Pharoahe Monch Featuring Nate Dogg - Oh No BON - Boys Cleptomaniacs Featuring Bryan Chambers - All I Do
June 27, 2024Jun 27 Author I’ll always remember when “Love What You Do” was played on the chart show. I must have been vaguely aware of The Divine Comedy before but I was so struck by the beautiful simplicity of this, and I still love it. Not far behind is the wonderful and unique “Ms Jackson”, and quirky Nelly is 3rd. 9 The Divine Comedy Love What You Do Lead from their 7th album: a simple but exquisite song with very meaningful lyrics and a very gentle and warm sound world to it 9 Outkast Ms Jackson 1st Top 40 for this already 9 year old hip hop duo: a fantastic track with quirky rap sections that go off in different directions 8 Nelly Furtado I'm Like A Bird Debut hit for this Canadian singer songwriter: an excellent pop song that also has a unique flavour and quirky slightly folky style 8 Manic Street Preachers So Why So Sad They released 2 contrasting singles from the album: this is the more poppy and fabulous with warm harpsichord production 8 Semisonic Chemistry Last of their 4 hits and they're all very strong: this is a lovely sweet number which puns on scientific and romantic chemistry 7 Manic Street Preachers Found That Soul This is the heavier of the concurrent singles but also an excellent tune: not sure if the choice to not make it a double A paid off 7 King Adora Suffocate 1st of a couple of Top 40s for this UK band: a hard hitting but strong and well performed track about toxic codependent love 7 Samantha Mumba Always Come Back To Your Love This has an incredibly infectious tune and backing; so delightfully so that the fact the song is really very basic can be overlooked 6 Marilyn Manson The Fight Song Not for the faint hearted and very heavy lyrically and musically: I don't love listening to this but it is a very effective slice of rock 6 Mario Piu Presents DJ Arabesque The Vision 2nd and last hit for this Italian DJ: a really strong club track but doesn't have anything to make it stand out like "Communication" 5 Mystikal Featuring Nivea Danger (Been So Long) His 3rd hit in a few months including his feature on "Stutter": he has quite a raucous style but this has a good beat and is catchy 5 Stuntmasterz The Ladyboy Is Mine Only hit for this UK group with a mash up of "Lady" and "The Boy Is Mine": it works very well and is a fun while inessential listen 5 Kaci Paradise 1st of a couple of cover hits for this US 13 year old: it's a straightforward but nice song with a Latin American hot weather feel 4 Melanie B Feels So Good This is a fairly one note pop RnB number but I do think it's her best solo hit so far with quite a soulful and uplifting feel to it 4 A1 No More This doesn't have the sparkle of "Caught In The Middle" and very much fits the mould for early 00s pop hits, but it's not bad 4 Caprice Once Around The Sun 2nd and final hit for this supermodel: it's quite a basic ballad with limited replay value but quite sweet and well performed 3 Dane Shut Up And Forget About It Solo debut for Dane after his True Steppers hits: it's OK but missing the interesting garage elements of those; standard pop 3 Ricky Martin With Christina Aguilera Nobody Wants To Be Lonely Another duet from him: there's plenty of vocal prowess and emotion on display here but the song itself lacks a strong melody 2 Ja Rule Featuring Christina Milian Between Me And You 1st hit for either of these other than a feature: sadly Christina's chorus is very weak and Ja Rule's shouty rapping is of its time 2 Human Nature He Don't Love You Only Top 40 for this long running Australian band: maybe they had better but this falls flat and sounds like an *Nsync B side 57__SVX1vMs MYxAiK6VnXw 2001 Week 11: #630 17/03/2001 Westlife Uptown Girl 1 {1}-2-3-5-8-9-16-24-33-35-39-49-47-63-60-68->16 #631 17/03/2001 Gorillaz Clint Eastwood 4 {4}-5-6-4-5-6-9-9-12-14-14-23-25-39-49-59-65->17 #632 17/03/2001 D12 Shit On You 10 {10}-14-21-31-40-46-66-71R(146)->8 #633 17/03/2001 Artful Dodger Featuring Michelle Escoffery Think About Me 11 {11}-17-26-36-38-47-62-63->8 #634 17/03/2001 DJ Luck And MC Neat Piano Loco 12 {12}-19-27-38-41-53-65-62->8 #635 17/03/2001 Aerosmith Jaded 13 {13}-25-39-50-60-65-72->7 #636 17/03/2001 Xzibit X 14 {14}-18-24-37-42-57-71->7 #637 17/03/2001 Dream He Loves U Not 17 {17}-21-30-40-43-50-68->7 #638 17/03/2001 David Gray This Year's Love 20 {20}-28-37-51-70-64R(495)->6 #639 17/03/2001 Jonathan Wilkes Just Another Day 24 {24}-48->2 #640 17/03/2001 Lionel Richie Tender Heart 29 {29}-44-59->3 #641 17/03/2001 BM Dubs Presents Mr Rumble Featuring Brasstooth And Kee Whoomp! June 27, 2024Jun 27 'I'm Like A Bird' was a great debut for Nelly <3 I didn't discover her material until the largely more attention-grabbing Loose era, with Timbaland beats galore, but there's definitely room in my affections for this more stripped back, soulful sound too. However, 'Ms. Jackson' is my favourite of this section and right up there as one of my top songs of the year  love the more traditional hip-hop elements mixed with piano, irresistible hook and effortlessly cool feel while having emotional depth. The animals in the video too *.* 'Ms. Jackson' reminds me that Now 49 songs are appearing now, which stands out as a particularly great compilation for strong genre diversity - OutKast, Zero 7, S Club 7, Wheatus, Roger Sanchez, Radiohead - you name it.
June 27, 2024Jun 27 Weeks 6 and 7 Ash - Shining Light – another big highlight of early 00's rock. Saw them play in Brighton in 2017 and it was a blast hearing it live! / Papa Roach - Last Resort / Wheatus - Teenage Dirtbag / Shaggy Featuring Rikrok - It Wasn't Me / U2 - Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of – thought this was a great follow up to 'Beautiful Day' / Planet Funk - Chase The Sun / Atomic Kitten - Whole Again / Mya - Case Of The Ex – catchy rnb pop indeed. Forgot about it until I heard it on the 3's sesh last time I came on though / Amira - My Desire (Remix 2) / Grandaddy - The Crystal Lake / Mansun - Fool / Fun Lovin' Criminals - Loco / JJ72 – Snow / Warp Brothers - We Will Survive / Joe Featuring Mystikal - Stutter / Dumdums - Army Of Two / The Thrillseekers Featuring Sheryl Deane - Synaesthesia (Fly Away) / Alice Deejay - Celebrate Our Love – now this is very weak from Alice Deejay / Starsailor - Fever - found this very boring. Week 8: very weak bunch, only like the top 4 and the Jools / Jay K one is alright too. Dido - Here With Me / Jakatta - American Dream / Girls@Play - Airhead / Backstreet Boys - The Call / Jools Holland And Jamiroquai - I'm In The Mood For Love / My Vitriol - Always Your Way / Vengaboys - Forever As One / The Orb - Once More / Angelic - Can't Keep Me Silent / Debelah Morgan - Dance With Me / Nelly - E.I.
June 27, 2024Jun 27 'Ms Jackson' I remember from school at the time (I was nine years old at the time) and becuase our principal was called 'Ms Jackson' my classmates thought the song was funny. Nelly Furtado is unusual in that she started off her chart career very MOR with 'I'm Like A Bird' then went to R&B/dancepop later in the decade. 'I'm Like A Bird' was on the radio lots and my mum liked it at the time, its a bit too MOR for me. 'Always Come Back To Your Love' is a really nice song from Samantha Mumba.
