Day 25 - A song you like that's about an historical event

Had to google this one!

Going with this song, as I think the AIDS epidemic is something we should all learn about in school (couldn't happen for a lot of people in the UK due to Section 28, just had to deal with the heavily right wing media representing it in a certain way.....)

Also I was today's years old when I found out that 'Hold On' by Sarah Mclachlan is also about the same crisis!

I have to say I’m very impressed in the showing for this challenge, well done everyone!

Also now that Jade has mentioned a certain event in her last post I can no longer send Bastille with any sense of pride as it would feel like I am cheating. :P

Day 25: going niche with a song about the 1893 Chicago World's Fair!

It certainly won’t be overruled by me, which is one of the perks of being the host, I don’t have to veto songs if they don’t fit the theme, it’s up to the challenger of the day to call out any discrepancies with their challenge! :P

No problem here

Some great picks today - Siouxsie, Bruce, Dylan, OMD, Robert Wyatt (although I prefer Costello's version), Tchaikovsky, Creedence and Boney M are all favourites of mine. And there's some interesting looking stuff to check out later too.

I will always find songs with lyrics that have a deeper meaning preferable to throwaway (boy meets girl, i want to dance etc) type stuff, not that there isn't a place for that, so I'm really enjoying all the answers. And as a bonus I've learnt something about the Battle of Red Cliffs too.

Edited by Severin

Two of the songs I've chosen already would have suited this theme, Jarrow Song (the Jarrow march) and Oklahoma (the Oklahoma bombing). I've already used ELO who did a song about the battle of Marston Moor and Marillion who have written a few songs about historical events.

So I'm going for East Coast Racer by Big Big Train which is about the Mallard which broke the world record speed for a train on July 3rd 1938, 126 miles per hour, a record that still stands for steam powered trains.

Day 25:

This is about Irish emigration to America in the 19th century.

DAY TWENTY FIVE - A song that reminds you of a historical event

Billie Holiday - Strange Fruit

This was the first thing that came to mind. A wonderfully performed track by Billie Holiday, it's almost traumatising in its portrayal of racism in the US and the story in particular of the lynchings that used to be targeted at black people in the 1920s/30s. The imagery of them being strung up from the trees like fruit is just a really powerful one and I find the song and the performance really affecting. The other reason I chose it is that the song itself, and the singer, also represents a key event in black history in the US. I suspect many will already know this but Billie was actually prosecuted for refusing to stop singing the song and spent time in prison as a result - an act that is kind of the equivalent of a Rosa Parks story in terms of a black female taking a stance against the inequality and hatred in the US.

Without a doubt, one of the most important songs in the history of music.

It's still powerful but the bravery she showed just by singing it back then is unmatched.

If it proves to be too much of a challenge I may consider changing to his other option midway through the day…

Well, 19 different nominations in, it seems this challenge was actually a good idea after all! Now for the rest of us to try and find something.

It's good to have a balance between ones that just need a reference in a title and the occasional one that requires a bit more thought about the content of the song - I'm enjoying the theme today

Day 25 Fall Out Boy - We Didn't Start The Fire

This is a modern take on the Billy Joel song, it's a cover essentially but with updated lyrics

April 25th – A song you like that is about a famous historical event [Challenged by Severin]

Certainly one of the most challenging tasks I’ve come up against during this month, and whilst I had a few options to go for that had not been picked by others, I decided to settle on this famous piece by the legendary Jamaican singer. According to Wikipedia; The title and lyrics refer to the black US cavalry regiments, known as "Buffalo Soldiers", that fought in the Native American Wars after 1866.

Bob Marley & The Wailers – Buffalo Soldier

April 25th – A song you like that is about a famous historical event

OK, so this challenge was definitely the hardest yet! 'Zombie' was the first one that came to mind but that was taken early so I had to do a little more digging and I've come up with a song inspired by the sad events of 9/11, from back in the days when Coldplay actually used to be a great band rather than the shadow of it they are these days, and from what I regard as their best album!
