Its a huge shame it didnt go number 1 in the UK but its one of those songs that feels like it was a number 1, its done so well sales in the UK are close to 4 million.

Likewise here in Ireland it only went to number 2 but again a massive hit here, so a number 1 for too sweet n both countries would be great if it happens.

I think that's really pushing it, but you do you.

It's even funnier coming from a fan of Bjork, whose highest charting single peaked at #4 and whose last top 10 entry was nearly 30 years ago.

I thinks you guys misunderstood what I was trying to say

the point I was trying to make is that many artists have a big first hit like Rick Astley or Hozier

and many others after that, and even if those are not as big, Rick Astley and Hozier are not one hit wonders

it would be silly to disregard Rick Astley's career cos the singles after Never gonna give you up didn't go to #1

and I was trying to say the same for Kylie as example, but maybe what I wrote wasn't clear

for many years Kylies biggest hit was her debut but she was tons of other hits

^ No one called Rick Astley a one hit wonder though  I admittedly used a lazy term for Hozier who isn’t a one hit wonder but a one top 15 hit wonder. :kink:

Yes, but that's not even true either so 🤷

I think you used that example and deliberately worded it how you did because you knew it would wind people up.

Tbf I don't think the comparison between Hozier (prior to the last 3 weeks) and Rick Astley is that off base, obviously Rick had plenty of big hits back in the day but I think it's fair to consider him a quasi one hit wonder these days.

Although remains to be seen if this Hozier song will actually be remembered in the long run as well or if he'll be the new Aloe Blacc x

Honestly the main thing for me with this is that people are generally too eager to put the one hit wonder tag down in terms of either how quickly they do so or the threshold to which they require (I've seen Americans say Lil Nas X was one prior to "MONTERO" ). Like it takes away the fascination with the statistical anomaly and I feel like it's also often used too often to dismiss an artist with a fanbase (which I'd argue is a factor that makes it harder to call someone as such outside of strict chart definitions, which themselves feel a bit dated nowadays).
@Dircadirca agree actually, though I guess everyone has a different idea of what is considered a OHW. Is there actually an official definition? Lol

In fairness, only a very minuscule percentage of songs are going to be well-known/remembered by the general public 40 years on, we're comparing that against somebody who is currently releasing music whom it is fair to say most people would only know one song by (well, until 'Too Sweet' becomes stratospheric and unavoidable anyway). Although Hozier is certainly not a one hit wonder.

I never thought I'd see a Hozier vs Rick Astley debate of all things on here

There's definitely a selection of artists who the general public may consider a one hit wonder but actually aren't, and I'd say Hozier may well have been in that group for some time. I saw someone on Twitter the other day refer to Natalie Imbruglia as a one hit wonder and it made me feel sick tbh x
I hate it when people talk about One Hit Wonders dismissively when the act has had several top 10 hits. One of my friends was calling Mika one and he had 4 other top 10 hits as well as 'Grace Kelly'. It just shows their ignorance- it'll be like me saying that Marcus Rashford is the only decent football player when I don't follow football at all!
Can we all agree that the term One Hit Wonder basically means "one stratospheric hit that breaks the zeitgeist, leading to all their other hits (if any) being largely forgotten by the public consciousness", and that this label can be awarded retrospectively with new generations of listeners only knowing that one stratospheric song (the reason why so many artists are, technically incorrectly labelled as such)?

Considering Benson was 890 ahead of hozier on first look shows how strong hozier is. Should be 1 on apple soon and probably I tunes already 1 on spotify and Amazon, needs a youtube video of some kind but looking like a 80k sales plus song in a week

Hozier is 100% number 1 this week.

Deserved, this song is great.

Would love to see it as the new number one for weeks and would be interesting to see him beating the new Swift's song in two weeks.
