Posted July 5, 2024Jul 5 Without naming examples yet, I was thinking of some artists in recent times who went on to score a major UK hit but then seemed to have no actual success thereafter. Whilst we would normally refer to such examples as "one hit wonders" it's fair to say that sometimes these hits come about by accident, as if they were a complete fluke that somehow gained some traction and then quickly tailed off after an early surge of interest. Perhaps one name I can think of that was tipped to become something at the time was Cat Burns. A big hit in 2022 with go that remained inside the Top 40 for half the year. No other noteworthy hits since then, and can't even get any impact from Radio 1 playlisting. Was the song itself a chart fluke? Perhaps not given its longevity, but was she a chart fluke as an artist?
July 5, 2024Jul 5 Author Gayle? Oh yes that very much counts. What about Kenya Grace? Was that a chart fluke getting a #1 and not anything since then?
July 5, 2024Jul 5 Adele make you feel my love? Was released but didn’t really chart and then X factor used it constantly and it went top 10
July 5, 2024Jul 5 What about Frankie and eamon 2005 sure both had 1 big hit about each other They didn't know each other, that was a myth at the time that Frankee was Eamon's girlfriend but she just cashed in off the back of his song.
July 5, 2024Jul 5 Gayle? I don't think of this as especially a fluke. Maybe getting to #1 exceeds expectations, but the song was released through Atlantic Records and they farmed cheap virality out of it. Her not getting another major hit is just standard bad artist management. Proper flukes I find are hard to come by. I'd think something like "Harness Your Hopes", the random b-side that became Pavement's career defining song due to an algorithm quirk, except that's never really charted. Maybe Richy Mitch is something similar but I've never really looked into it. Maybe that fake JLS song
July 5, 2024Jul 5 Adele make you feel my love? Was released but didn’t really chart and then X factor used it constantly and it went top 10 In that case, I’d also mention Beyoncé’s Listen (minor top 20 hit before the Alexandra duet which then propelled it to #8(?)).
July 5, 2024Jul 5 The Weeknd’s greatest hits album spending literally years in the UK charts, and very high up, simply cos people stream his individual songs so much.
July 6, 2024Jul 6 Without mentioning any Tiktok songs, I think it's safe to say most of big room DJs during the charting big room house era were chart flukes. DVBBS & Borgeous (ft. Tinie Tempah and KSHMR) - Tsunami (Jump) Showtek & We Are Loud (feat. Sonny Wilson) - Booyah R3HAB & Ummet Ozcan (feat. NERVO) - Revolution Avicii vs. Nicky Romero - I Could Be The One
July 6, 2024Jul 6 Lana del Rey - Gods and Monsters Charted cos it was featured for 2 seconds on Eastenders But was not even a single but totaly random
July 6, 2024Jul 6 Megan Trainor lasting more than one album… I really thought she was a one hit wonder (one album wonder at the VERY least!) but somehow she is still around.
July 7, 2024Jul 7 Adele make you feel my love? Was released but didn’t really chart and then X factor used it constantly and it went top 10 Was this just a lucky coincidence that this took off when she had the release of 21 coming up or do we think the label had something to do with the decision to play it constantly that series? Maybe they accepted label money in return for heavy use on the show. Edited July 7, 2024Jul 7 by musicfan97
July 7, 2024Jul 7 All those one hit wonders during the first lockdown. That was when TikTok properly blew up and had massive effects on the charts. A lot of them have never been seen again.

Maybe they accepted label money in return for heavy use on the show.Probably a mix? I think back then this happened by luck - we saw "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls make the top 10 off the back of one cover on X Factor, and "Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman did the same off the back of one BGT performance. The 2014 series of X Factor saw "Say Something" being used quite a bit (or so it felt) but it didn't have a direct impact on the charts.
