August 30, 2024Aug 30 Announced today that 'workers will have the right to a 4 day week' (made up of compressed hours) Not sure of all the ins and outs of it yet but to me that sounds good. Should note that some industries/workplaces are also reducing standard hours so this should pair quite nicely.
August 30, 2024Aug 30 It sounds great but there’ll be some loophole where teachers don’t get it so I’m not going to get excited.
August 30, 2024Aug 30 The 100 more important things wrong with this country and he's going after people being able to smoke in outdoor beer gardens. Do me a bloody favour. This isn't the only thing he's going after.

Trying to get things done on a Friday or Monday is almost impossible, especially if it's something critical.Â
August 30, 2024Aug 30 @1829172165272580618 Seems supported. This is relatively easy to push through in comparison to more deep-seated problems in the country and if it lowers smoking rates, good, that's less of a cost on the health service. How will it lower smoking rates? It’s literally smoking outside, it’s barely a risk to anybody. It’s not doing anything. The concept of banning smoking gradually makes sense, but this makes no sense. There is no benefit, it’s just illiberal nonsense. It will simply aggravate people’s existence and enjoyment who have no desire to quit anyway. Not to mention it’s just a complete irresponsible attack on an already struggling industry. There is no need or benefit to this idea, it’s just a botched attempt at reducing the burden on the NHS because they have no real solutions for the NHS. It’s a huge financial black hole and the country has no money supposedly. Keir Starmer doesn’t appear to have many or any principles but if he has one it’s being the fun police. This was a result of Keir Starmer btw https://www.theguardian.com/law/2012/jul/27...urdist-operetta and 12 years later you got people receiving absurd sentences for memes or online posts it’s all very sketchy, politicising the judiciary can easily undermine the whole system very quickly.  I saw this yesterday which shows it wasn’t isolated to the riots https://x.com/craigmurrayorg/status/1829096789175042117?s=46 this is his actual philosophy. So the smoking thing kind of fits in with that. Some people enjoy a cig outside pubs or wherever chatting flirting etc I can’t relate to that I’m banning that. It’s just absurd. Totally illiberal nonsense. He’s giving himself a persona of an authoritarian priggish dullard, nobody was asking for this. When he went on LBC and essentially endorsed a war crime I think it should have been more clear then that this wasn’t a safe pair of hands, but the Tories couldn’t really weaponise that as they also were somewhat going along with war crimes. Nevertheless it’s a terrible look and the polling seems a bit irrelevant given who really is affected by it. I don’t see such a policy winning votes but it could definitely lose a lot. If it’s really about the NHS then ban smoking altogether? Surely the sugar industry is worse at this point, especially given cigs are offset by huge taxes. There is no real logic behind it other than nanny state type interfering. It might have a lot more negatives than positives.  Anywho, onto one other interesting mistake of Starmer is who he has appointed as his team. Lammy was obviously a crazy one but Jess Phillips another who isn’t a genius to say the least, she said that she got seen quicker at a hospital because of her vote for a ceasefire https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/artic...s-Phillips.html this is such an absurd thing to say, the implications feed into that whole two tier thing but more importantly it’s insulting the professional of NHS doctors and perhaps suggesting maybe a Jewish person for example wouldn’t have been seen quick, just another a long line of missteps from her. To be honest it might be true but a truly silly thing to say nonetheless.  There was all this talk of the grown ups being in charge but seems the opposite. Just people with no plans to solve actual problems. Banning zombie knives for the 100th time isn’t going to reduce knife crime which is out of control in London. No real plans to boost the economy or lower bills or anything. The boats keep coming in record numbers, they have no idea what to do. You can’t even lock real criminals up now as there are no spaces left in prison. Then his whole outlook is yeah things will get worse. Why did you want power if you had no real solutions or good ideas? He used frivolous means to oust Faiza Sheehan yet allowed much worse from people he approved of. This is a guy showing he will use whatever means wrong or right to get what he wants or punish who he doesn’t want and the never ends well. From my lifetime he is definitely the worst leader by a long way, every person had positives even maybe Liz Truss has a few but I can’t see any with Starmer.

I mean jesus this is not some small harmless pastime: NHS data from 2020 showed there were more than 506,100 hospital admissions and 74,800 deaths attributed to the habit among adults aged 35 between April 2019 to March 2020.What you and the media and many commenters online all seem to be missing or not taken account of though, is that these are leaked Whitehall proposals, not laws being passed, and it's meant to be one part of a larger Bill, banning it all in a range of places, possibly including pub gardens. No need to get bent out of shape until the real bill gets out there, they might even walk it back, though to be honest I hope they don't. Besides, the insides of pubs are far better since smoking inside was banned. I saw this yesterday which shows it wasn’t isolated to the riots https://x.com/craigmurrayorg/status/1829096789175042117?s=46 this is his actual philosophy. It might have a lot more negatives than positives. I mean, sure, it's not exactly giving 'politics which treads a little lighter on people's lives', but to have a leader who takes action to shape society for the better and in this case healthier, I can live with some of that. It's not really freedom for others if you can harm others with what you do. Oh yeah, and maintain the sugar tax. Big one always talked up by people who complain the government isn't letting them have fun anymore but ended up reducing the sugar intake of children significantly, improving their health for the future. Anywho, onto one other interesting mistake of Starmer is who he has appointed as his team. From my lifetime he is definitely the worst leader by a long way, every person had positives even maybe Liz Truss has a few but I can’t see any with Starmer. I'd save the 'no plans' argument for a few months into government; though from my perspective nearly every action they've taken so far has been very much that of people with a plan to get things effected and working as quick as they are able to. Not all of it for the best, I'm no Starmer defender, their economy and foreign policy leaves a lot to be desired, but anyone pretending these guys aren't light-years ahead of the Conservative governments in terms of doing things and having a positive vision for the country they think they can put into practice isn't being honest with themselves. (that Liz Truss mention has got to be trolling)
August 30, 2024Aug 30 Of course it's going to reduce the amount of smoking/smokers as a lot of people are "social smokers" and will only do it when they're out in places with smoking areas etc. Even people who are heavy smokers will do it less if they're physically not able to in the place they're at. I'm all for banning smoking completely. Passive smoking is dangerous and can damage the health of others, I'm speaking from experience there as well, anyone who knows me knows how anti smoking I am and how much having to live with two heavy smokers has negatively impacted my health over the last year or so. I'm really glad to see this implemented tbh. Until you feel the affects of inhaling other people's cigarette smoke you maybe won't understand how bad it can be. There were a lot of people smoking and vaping around me over the weekend because it was an outside event I was at but because of the crowd and close proximity I was still bothered by it and had to use my inhaler more frequently as a result.
August 30, 2024Aug 30 I'm with Lindsey on this one. I was afraid of properly saying it because I thought I'd get lynched but I hate being around people who are smoking. I had a friend who was a smoker and it wasn't something I felt comfortable with, but how do you politely tell someone that you don't want them to roll a cigarette in your car... August 30, 2024Aug 30 While I don't disagree with the basic principle and long term goal of banning smoking in beer gardens, outside clubs, etc it's going to be another thing that once rolled out is just casually ignored because it's never really enforced. NHS sites were made smoke-free zones a while ago now but whenever you're at a hospital there are visitors and guests smoking in the grounds in their droves, and often the most vulnerable or incapacitated accompanied by staff too (which they should surely be strongly discouraging or denying?). It'll go exactly the same way and have little impact.
August 30, 2024Aug 30 I’m all for this I even hate getting stuck behind some idiot in town who is blowing smoke behind them.  It makes it even better when ultra right wing libertarians are getting their knickers in a twist (like Telegraph columnist Madeline Grant) about it and the right to smoke round everyone else. Just as long as it’s enforced properly, I mean this is basically an amendment to the 2007 act because people don’t smoke inside but crowd round entrances and the insides of places stink of smoke anyway.
August 30, 2024Aug 30 The original smoking ban led to pubs etc installing outside heaters. If they disappear, that will help to reduce carbon emissions.
August 30, 2024Aug 30 The good news is that the Daily Mail seems to have decided that the new government has somehow managed to solve every major problem facing this country in just eight weeks. After all, the big issue facing the country now is apparently that Keir Starmer moved a painting.

My school isn't very supportive of 4 day weeks for staff and I've been wanting to go for it after being a 4 day weeker in my old job. If this goes through I'll definitely be putting in my request for a 4 day week again.

I think it's incredibly rude to do that in someone elses car without asking!

If they were actually your friend I’d imagine they wouldn’t do it anyway?
