Biography

Nobody makes feeling bad sound as good as The Weeknd. Even the singer’s sunniest tracks (“Can’t Feel My Face”, “Starboy”) feel anchored by darkness—the sense that pleasure is pain and beauty decays and you can’t have the night without the morning after. The brainchild of Toronto singer Abel Tesfaye, the project took off in 2011 with a string of mixtapes (later collected as 2012’s Trilogy) that forged cavernous, falsetto-driven R&B with narratives drenched in drugs, sex and other regrettable decisions—a sound both sensuous and detached, featherlight and dead heavy. One of the earliest musicians to find his footing on the internet, Tesfaye originally offered his music through YouTube and free downloads, a move that felt radical then but is common now. Ethiopian by heritage (his parents immigrated to Canada in the late ’80s, just before he was born), Tesfaye—out from behind the mask of making art online—has since come to represent the changing face of Toronto, rooting himself not just in an international musical community but in a specific diasporic experience. Tesfaye’s music has become a symbol of hedonism pushed to bleak excess, with a series of albums—including 2015’s Grammy-winning Beauty Behind the Madness, 2016’s multiplatinum Starboy and 2020’s dense and atmospheric After Hours—whose narrators can’t seem to say no even if they hate themselves for it later. And though his music has gotten a little brighter over time, the prevailing mood remains heavy, even unsettling—the ride you want more of even when you’ve had too much. Speaking to Apple Music about the persona behind his songs, Tesfaye said, “I’m a chill person. That guy is who I am, but it is who I am to myself and in my writing. Sometimes you take him and then you create more, and then it becomes this beast. You add more to him, and then it’s uncontrollable—its own character. It’s like Scarface, the villain: It’s horrible, but you can’t stop looking at it.” Though he didn’t release a new album in 2021, he was a constant part of the cultural conversation, releasing a slew of singles, performing at the Super Bowl and on Saturday Night Live (think: “Ladies and gentlemen, The Weeknd”) and winning the Apple Music Award for Artist of the Year. - Apple Music

Biography

Australia’s biggest pop icon is a master of shape-shifting, with a silvery voice that adapts to spunky novelty dance tracks as well as sleek synth-pop and a theatrical bent that turns her live shows into spectacles. Born in Melbourne in 1968, Kylie Minogue got her start in acting, debuting on the soap opera Neighbours in her teen years and almost immediately becoming one of the nation’s most beloved television actors. A benefit performance led to the release of her first single, a cover of Little Eva’s “The Loco-Motion”, in 1987; it became a hit in Australia, and her 1988 re-recording of it, helmed by the superproducer team Stock Aitken Waterman, was a worldwide smash. The new version was included on her 1988 debut, Kylie, a collection of frothy pop highlighted by the sparkling “I Should Be So Lucky”. Minogue continued her relationship with SAW until the 1993 release of Kylie Minogue, which was recorded with club-oriented producers including M People and Brothers In Rhythm. Her aesthetic matured during the ’90s, both in her solo work and on the Nick Cave duet “Where the Wild Roses Grow”. In 2001, the slick “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” blew up in clubs and on the radio, and its accompanying album, Fever, featuring the buoyant “Love At First Sight” and the sinuous “Come Into My World”, re-established Minogue as a pop force. She later worked with pop gurus like Stuart Price and Greg Kurstin on tracks such as the sumptuous “All the Lovers” and the peppy “Wow”, flirted with country and disco, indulged her art-house side in films like Holy Motors, and embarked on ambitious tours that showcased her flair for the dramatic—and her long-honed ability to captivate audiences. - Apple Music

If she is greedy and wants to catch Frankie Laine she can do a remix with Mariah and get some more weeks at Christmas

It's very interesting how Sabrina Carpenter does so much better in the UK than in the US. She has only one week at #1 on Hot 100 whereas she has 17 weeks at #1 on UK singles chart.

Hooray at Lady Mars reaching new peak again!

That won't work it's been AIWFC or LC for last 3 years and doubt gonna ask for a new credit on those if she does a remix

Only people who managex to break that strangle hold is Ed and ladbaby

It makes sense when you look at whats been above espresso, country music and US rap are gaining in popularity in the UK but they lose just enough for sabrina to slide by. If you removed the country and rap songs above her, she'd probably lead for 17 weeks in the US as well

If she is greedy and wants to catch Frankie Laine she can do a remix with Mariah and get some more weeks at Christmas

She's got a Christmas special coming up on Netflix, would love to see fruitcake, her Christmas EP from last year, make a spash because of it

Taste has left quite the impression, 5 weeks to be exact

 Post of the week

The Addison Rae track espeically vocally reminds me of a poppier version of FKA Twigs much more than Lana but I get the lyric references.

The NDotz guitar is quite Spanish flamenco I think, not that I know much about the genre.

My Google app Identify song didn't recognise the song when I sung/chanted the chorus of the Tate McRae song!

EDIT: It does now! :)
