Posted November 4, 2024Nov 4 In lieu of the previous SyncTube sessions' weekly polls cutting each week's songs down to a list of 10 options to vote for because no one volunteered to do the work to make such curated lists, for our Hot 100 #1s marathon I'm just going to post one of these threads each week allowing people to vote for whichever songs they want from the full list x If you don't know what the above sentence is referring to don't worry, this thread is open to participation from anyone (although we're always open to new participants at our weekly listening sessions x), just post in the thread with up to 5 favourites and, if you want, up to 3 least favourites from the below song list. The song with the most favourite nods will get a play at the start of next week's session (and the song with the most least favourite nods will just have a permanent place on a wall of shame for funziez). For the first time there was a tie for the best vote in the last poll as both 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' and 'Let It Be' got 6 votes. I considered making a flash poll to separate them but it was getting a little close to the start time of the new session (imagine me ever preparing far enough in advance to avoid this problem!) so I instead just gave the discretion to pick the winner to Bjork who showed up on SyncTube without having voted here, and he chose 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', so a second poll win for Simon & Garfunkel (and none for The Beatles) it is. Based on comments on SyncTube I think that's the way a flash poll would have gone anyway. There was also a three way tie for third place behind this pair, with Carpenters' '(They Long To Be) Close To You', George Harrison's 'My Sweet Lord' and Edwin Starr's 'War' each earning 4 votes. There was a clear winner for the worst poll at least as The Osmonds' 'One Bad Apple' got 5 votes, ahead of Sly & The Family Stone's 'Everybody Is A Star' and Ray Stevens' 'Everything Is Beautiful' which got 4 and 3 votes respectively as the positivity of their titles was not returned by the voters. Wall of Fame Week 1 (Aug 1958-Apr 1962): Percy Faith - Theme From "A Summer Place" [7/9] Week 2 (May 1962-Aug 1964): The Tornados - Telstar [7/9] Week 3 (Aug 1964-Feb 1967): Simon & Garfunkel - The Sounds Of Silence [7/13] Week 4 (Feb 1967-Feb 1970): The Doors - Light My Fire [6/10] Week 5 (Feb 1970-Jun 1971): Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water [6/9] (tied with The Beatles - Let It Be) Wall of Shame Week 1 (Aug 1958-Apr 1962): Larry Verne - Mr. Custer [8/9] Week 2 (May 1962-Aug 1964): Steve Lawrence - Go Away Little Girl [5/8] Week 3 (Aug 1964-Feb 1967): SSgt Barry Sadler - The Ballad Of The Green Berets [9/11] Week 4 (Feb 1967-Feb 1970): The Rascals - People Got To Be Free [2/6] Week 5 (Feb 1970-Jun 1971): The Osmonds - One Bad Apple [5/7] We return to a full length list this week covering the 255th through 297th #1s (43 #1s but 45 songs including two double A-Sides), spanning from mid June 1971 (Carole King's 'It's Too Late' / 'I Feel The Earth Move') to the end of June 1973 (George Harrison's 'Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)'). I plan to host a regularly scheduled session again next week so this thread will stay open for a week and I'll try and be more cognisant this time of any potential ties for the win :kink: Al Green - Let's Stay Together America - A Horse With No Name Bee Gees - How Can You Mend A Broken Heart Bill Withers - Lean On Me Billy Paul - Me And Mrs. Jones Carly Simon - You're So Vain Carole King - I Feel The Earth Move Carole King - It's Too Late Cher - Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves The Chi-Lites - Oh Girl Chuck Berry - My Ding-A-Ling Dawn - Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree Don McLean - American Pie Donny Osmond - Go Away Little Girl The Edgar Winter Group - Frankenstein Elton John - Crocodile Rock George Harrison - Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth) Gilbert O'Sullivan - Alone Again (Naturally) Helen Reddy - I Am Woman Isaac Hayes - Theme From Shaft James Taylor - You've Got A Friend Johnny Nash - I Can See Clearly Now Looking Glass - Brandy (You're A Fine Girl) Mac Davis - Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me Melanie - Brand New Key Michael Jackson - Ben Neil Diamond - Song Sung Blue Neil Young - Heart Of Gold Nilsson - Without You The O'Jays - Love Train Paul McCartney and Linda McCartney - Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey Paul McCartney & Wings - My Love The Raiders - Indian Reservation (The Lament Of The Cherokee Reservation Indian) Roberta Flack - The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face Roberta Flack - Killing Me Softly With His Song Rod Stewart - Maggie May Rod Stewart - Reason To Believe Sammy Davis Jr. - The Candy Man Sly & The Family Stone - Family Affair The Staple Singers - I'll Take You There Stevie Wonder - Superstition Stevie Wonder - You Are The Sunshine Of My Life The Temptations - Papa Was A Rollin' Stone Three Dog Night - Black And White Vicki Lawrence - The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia
November 4, 2024Nov 4 Author Full results from week 5: Best: Bridge Over Troubled Water x6 [won tiebreak] Let It Be x6 (They Long To Be) Close To You x4 My Sweet Lord x4 War x4 Ain't No Mountain High Enough x3 The Long And Winding Road x3 Me And Bobby McGee x3 American Woman x2 Brown Sugar x2 Isn't It A Pity x2 The Tears Of A Clown x2 ABC Cracklin' Rosie Joy To The World Make It With You Worst: One Bad Apple x5 Everybody Is A Star x4 Everything Is Beautiful x3 Make It With You x2 Joy To The World Knock Three Times ~ My votes for this week: Best: Bill Withers - Lean On Me Don McLean - American Pie Elton John - Crocodile Rock Stevie Wonder - Superstition The Temptations - Papa Was A Rollin' Stone I did like most of this week's songs but after looking back on the list there weren't actually that many that I loved, there are a few here that are undeniable classics but don't particularly appeal to me personally that much - giving a nod to The Temptations as a great discovery (in its full length form), pushing out James Taylor. Worst: Chuck Berry - My Ding-A-Ling Donny Osmond - Go Away Little Girl Mac Davis - Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me Three pretty easy picks for me here. The Mac Davis song isn't as bad as the other two but it was still pretty naff.

November 10, 2024Nov 10 Author This was going to be the first week where the winner was more than 1 vote ahead of the runner-up but the last couple of votes have restored the traditional 1 vote gap! (I was worried for a second it was about to make it a tie again )
