At the very least Radio 1 can still claim to be a 'breaker' for her in the UK as they were supporting her on the playlist right from the very start of 2024 as Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl was a Tune of the Week and then playlisted in January. It feels like because of this she just wasn't properly on their radar (though Mollie was probably playing her on Best New Pop before this) and so they wanted to evidence that they've championed her somewhere and the timeline meant this year was when they were going to do that.

A #1 album would also now rule him out.

I suspect you won't be able to go anywhere this year without hearing her music, so in that sense she will be the sound of 2025.

It's just that she was the sound of 2024 too and typically of Radio 1, they're always a few steps behind.

I had forgotten about this... they clearly could have actually put her on the 2024 list and been able to legitimately claim they called it then (although I don't think she'd have beaten The Last Dinner Party anyway).

I can’t see a KNEECAP thread, so sorry if this is in the wrong place but I’m not sure we’ll be seeing Radio 1 support them again - they’re currently being ‘assessed’ by counter terrorism Police for remarks they have apparently made at previous shows - it doesn’t look good if this is true:

No surprise the establishment are coming for them, pity the government don’t take a look at themselves for funding the Israeli government and their war machine.

The criteria has been changed for 2026 - artists can still be nominated with three Top 10 hits though.

BBC Sound Of 2026: Criteria tweaked to omit acts with "si...

The criteria for BBC Radio 1’s Sound Of award have been tweaked following the backlash Chappell Roan's win stirred up this year

It's funny because I was thinking in terms of what we tend to learn from End of Year lists: everything effectively peaks a little later than we feel, so I thought it was possible she'd actually accumulate more streams in 2025 than 2024 due to the initial slow start that year.

Looking at what I can scrounge from kworb and these are the figures I approximate:

2025 - 2.95 billion Spotify streams, on track for roughly 660 million more which would take it to 3.61 billion

2024 - 3.77 billion Spotify streams

So it's probably not getting there but it's actually pretty close between the two. I know what the realistic vibe of the situation is and I'm not trying to dispute it, I just think it's interesting because the bottom line paints things a little differently, especially as I think we're all prone to zoning out from songs once they leave the chart as if they're not still being streamed constantly.

Probably Sienna Spiro will be on the 2026 list. Don't know many other eligible recent chart artists with the new rules though apart from Luke Dean and Omar+ maybe.

Unfortunately for the Warrensphere, Alex has had four Top 10 hits!

I'd say he has a prettty "significant public profile" anyway!

The Future Sounds show is ALOT different to what it used to be like now with loads more pop artists than back in the day.

Well YES, much like Chappell Roan did by January 2025 😂

Rules are there to be bent if it looks good on Radio 1’s profile!
